These games are awful. I put 30+ hours into whatever the weird crossover dynasty + samurai warriors thing that was on the PC. Really enjoyed it. Awful games though.

He's pushing random buttons because he didn't bother to actually look up the game mechanics. You could win in God of War, DmC, or even a fighting game by just mashing the same attack button all the time, but that's not what the games are about.

Dynasty Warriors actually changes the game a lot between versions. Weapon elements and weaknesses, combo attacks, multiple weapons, counterattacks and counter-supers, and more.

So, go figure. If you decide to ignore the mechanics of a pure action game, then the game is boring.

@hailinel No thread about this game yet? I want to talk about it without actually playing it! They actually focused on a good part of the book for example, and introduced like the most honorable character in history in Chen Gong (I'm sure they ruined him somehow). Zhu Ran, Fa Zheng, and Yu Jin are extremely relevant to the over-arching plot unlike all of those nonsensical Jin fools. But most of all Dong Zhuo is voiced by Margulis! What could be better than Margulis Dong Zhuo.

Edit: Steve Blum Zhang Liao? Possibly the baddest motherfucker in history, voiced by the most generic voice actor ever? Fantastic!

That's a good way of putting it. They can be pretty fun in a mindless way for a while, but they're bad. I got some fun out of DW 6 and the one which was set in France during the Hundred Years' War and incorporated some RTS elements.

Huh, they changed Zhang Liao's voice actor... I'd like to think it's because Roger Craig Smith knew his talents are better spent elsewhere <3

@yummylee: Hey man people connect with Grayson Hunt/Wolverine. I'm used to the Japanese VO from Orochi 3 at this point, probably won't buy another one for 5-6 years; we'll see if Michael McConnohie and Steve Blum are still around then.

Yeah, the Lu Bu story is really interesting. They play Cheng Gong as a strategist that comes off as an unassuming fool. Zhang Liao does sound kind of weird with Steve Blum, but he's not terrible. One nice twist is that this time, they don't have Diaochan follow Lu Bu around as if they were actual lovers. She bows out early on and I haven't seen her since.

I just reached the first stage in the Lu Bu story wher Lu Lingqi is playable. After already messing around with her a bit in the challenge modes, I definitely like the way she plays. Also a major deviation from the source material to include her, but she comes across well.

I might post a thread later once I have more thoughts on it. I honestly haven't had time to play it that much yet and I'm just getting warmed up, really.

For some reason, I can get into EDF, but I can't get into Dynasty Warriors, despite the games being incredibly similar in a lot of ways.

@highmountainshoecobbler: yo people should listen to this guy before dismissing it. Going through DW Next on VITA I learned all the managing involved and I've got so much love for it, but even more hate for the touchpad QTE mess.

A full current-generation DW should compare to Otogi or whatever it was.

For anyone who has this, how's the weapon smithing in this version? Is it more like Orochi 3? I couldn't really get into vanilla 8 after the story mode because I didn't like the upgrade system.

I know that they said that they talked to some people about why they liked Dynasty warriors but I'm not sure that they talked to enough people because I've definitely heard people who liked it for reasons other than they wanted something mindlessly entertaining to play. Lemme be clear, I am not a fan of these games and I know that the guys are just shooting the shit while doing these quick looks but they have been making the same comments about these games for years now and I feel like they should either stop covering them or actually put in some more time to understand them.

If more people send them emails about why they like these games then maybe they'll eventually read one that helps give them a better understanding for why people like these games. Of course, playing them some more would probably be the most helpful in providing more understanding. Most of them disliked or didn't care about the Souls series for years (except Vinny) but recently Brad and Patrick ended up becoming big fans of it after putting in some more time with them. I don't expect that to happen with Dynasty Warriors but at the very least it could help clear things up.

They continue to be confused as to why anybody likes these games but unless they are willing to put in the time to understand then that will never change.

The only good Musuo games are the One Piece Musuo games.

Continued Quick Looks of these games confirm to me that Quick Looks aren't meant to be an inherently informative feature. I don't think there's any pre tense about this being useful to anyone interested in the series. That's really not a complaint or a critique by the way, just a personal observation. Although I do always kind of feel bad for DW fans and FF fans and the like when QLs like these pop up. It must suck being a fan of those series' on this site.

Basically it must suck having Hailinel's taste in games sometimes.

They keep making them because people buy them. My wife just got this today. It's not my cup of tea but she platinumed the last game. Maybe it's because she is Japanese?

So is this japanese Call of duty? Cause that Lu Bu guys is super edgy and this seems like something that is meant to male japanese teenagers. I've rented these games in the past and I could never get into the series. I just don't understand the appeal behind something so simple and mindless.

I played Dynasty Warriors co-op with a friend back when I didn't know any better. It was an alright time. I bet it's fun for younger kids.

These games look so fucking boring. Even if they are ignoring the stuff that is happening during missions, all it would amount to is quickly going to another part of the map, and wailing on more faceless dudes. The dialogue is braindead, the game itself is ugly, and the squealing J-rock in the background is the worst.

I don't understand why people buy these games.

In their defense, in their past looks at Dynasty Warriors games they've asked what people see in them and the vast majority of comments were what they referenced in the video: people just saying they did it to kill time and it was mindless.

I started nodding off half way through. I just remembered why I don't play these games.

Just a Dynasty Warrior game with a constant framerate would probably make it worth a PS4 version. From what I remember the ps3 version they QL'd ran pretty poorly.

Plus I see the appeal in mowing down hundreds of dudes every once in a while. I haven't played one since the ps2 era but it was some dumb fun I can get behind.

Jeff seems really down on games at the moment, it's all well and good to have a bit of fun and joke about a game like this, but I feel Jeff has kinda been a jerk the last month or so.

@aceofspudz: Or maybe people could ask outside of a certain crowd that tends to share the same interests and views, or even to fellow games press. Hell, certain reviews of Dynasty Warriors Gundam and recent DW entries from reviewers that do "get" Dynasty Warriors like Jim Sterling or certain Eurogamer writers get to the heart of the appeal. I'm bringing up the Diablo comparison because at a base level you can make many of the same criticisms if you're willfully ignorant of the core mechanics ("All you're doing is clicking!").

to be fair, something resonates a little about playing one soldier in a huge war going on around you, or maybe as a small squad helping to direct the overall outcome. kinda speaks to the dungeon keeper fan in me (though obviously on a much grander scale).

@liquidprince: I don't play many DW games but the One Piece one was the least interesting out of all of them so you are crazy. Plus everybody knows Sengoku Basara are the superior historical brawler games.

Jeff and Vinny completely understand why people keep buying Dynasty Warriors games. It's the same reason they always make a Quick Look.

Totally picked this up and been mucking around with it. DW8 was already a kind of huge game in terms of content, so this new edition is a nice boon. They revamped Ambition mode's endgame and kind of turned it into Empires Lite. Level cap got the increase all the way to 150 plus a new tier of leadership exp. New weapons and supposedly the DLC from 8 should transfer versions as well once Tecmo Koei gets it up on the PS4 store (nothing super confirmed yet though). Mix all that with what, 82 characters in the game now? Lots to do. But you gotta like doing it, and I do.

I'm also totally fine with Vinny and Jeff shitting all over it. I get a nice chuckle out of it and move on. I got more shit to unlock Lu Bu!

@bearpawb: This is the first time I've heard of Dynasty Warriors compared to Earth Defense Force, but now that I think about it...you're totally right. They are the exact same type of thing, and I enjoy them for the same reasons. Huh.
