Already have Dungeon Hunter Alliance, which seems to play a lot like this. So I'll pass for now.

@owl_of_minerva: Agreed, they are one of the last bastions of western RPG development. I wasn't too keen on NV when it was first announced but after having played it was thoroughly impressed and regard it as a definite improvement over its predecessor.

Wish they'd talked about how saving works in MP. I mean, if the host saves are all the other characters saved too, or is it (I hope not) so that the rest of the players are just throw-aways and if we resume a session later on we have to recreate our characters? How did that stuff work in the earlier games?

It's a bit too zoomed in also, I wish the camera would pull back a little more. And they say the SP is even more zoomed in? Crazy.

@owl_of_minerva: Personally, I don't believe the definition of an RPG is a game that relies on stats and dice rolls.  I do think Bioware need to return to more indepth character building but I don't think ME2 ceases to be an RPG because the combat system is more action focused.

Otherwise, I agree with what you're saying.. Obsidian are a really great developer and their shortcomings have always been purely because of publishers rushing them to release unfinished products.

Dave should have made this QL, he probably played the Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 and it's a lot more familiar to this genre to make some good questions

Host saves all charachters so yeah you can resume/skil your own guy again.

Looks pretty good. My friends and I were not pleased originally to hear you'd have separate SP and MP characters in D3III, but the fact that in MP you'll be instantly leveled to the hosts level takes care of most of my reservations, providing loot is shared between your SP and MP characters. So now I just hope that achievements earned in MP will unlock for all players.

It'd be nice too if story progress was saved for all characters, although if that is the case, I can't really figure out why they'd have separate SP & MP characters in the first place.

Seriously. A lot of hate in this thread.  The Obsidian guys are people who know the ins and outs of this game.  They do a pretty good job of explaining the surface features without getting too bogged down in the details, which is no mean feat if you've spent your last years on the details and have to pull yourself out to talk to press.  For myself, I had no interest in this game given the past iterations but am intrigued by this QL.

If there's a demo, I will definitely consume that, and would consider buying the full deal based on this.  It looks like there's an interesting amount of RPG with a pretty good chunk of action. Given that I couldn't stomach torchlight because I dislike the gameplay required by short-term buffs and they were necessary to play it effectively, this looks like it might do a good job of scratching my action RPG itch.

I'm not with the haters, they did a good job explaining what the game is about. I preordered the PC version based on this alone, hoping to get some friends to tag along. The pre-order bonuses look rather useless -- given what I saw in the video these items should be useless after a few levels, which you'll earn fast -- which I think is a good thing!

"Burning Band of Scorch - Ring of [+6] Fire and [+2] Strength - Increases the raw damage of your attacks and gives all of your weapons a chance to set your target ablaze.

Bite of the Arakun - Ring of [+12] Poison & [+2] Withering - Gives all of your weapons a chance to poison your target with lingering injury or soften their defenses - leaving them vulnerable for follow-up attacks.

Talisman of the Grand Mage - Amulet of [+8] Retribution and [+8] Armor - Reduces incoming damage on the bearer and has a chance to lash out with a mystical attack that injures close combat attackers.

Sacred Heart of the Legion - Amulet with [+2] Warding and [+2] Stamina - Increases the wearers health and adds a chance to pushback close combat assailants each time the bearer is struck."

Looking forward to giving this a go. As long as it's not a bugfest and I can get a friend to play with I think I'll be happy with some light action-RPGing.

I strongly disagree with most of what you have to say, but I guess that is a matter mostly of taste and priorities. "if one puts aside the flawed engine and interface that beset NWN2." - that is quite a lot to put aside and something I might never be willing or able to do. Engine and interface matters and can ruin a game. As for AP being more RPG than ME2, I don't agree, AP was a shooter first and foremost and in my opinion an extremely bad one at that. It seemed so like ME in its gameplay ambition that I have to think they saw ME and decided they had a better idea for the genre than Bioware did. In my opinion they just really didn't, or perhaps more likely, they didn't have the technical skills to realize their ambition. The basic action that most of the game consisted of was bad N64 port quality to me.

Note how the PR guy drops into "talk to the interviewer as if he don't know jack about games" whenever he gets to basic things like mana/energy bar mechanics...all while talking to a guy whos been in the business for over 10 years, and gamer since childhood.

Ah it all makes sense now.
You see, AP is not a shooter at all.
(in fact there are many ways to play without shooting guys at all)
This is the problem for almost every person who dislikes AP. Read up on the forums and it is easily noticable that almost all people who disliked AP excpected a shooter. Where as those who went into AP excpecting an RPG first with some spy/shooting elements got what they wanted out of it.
This is a common problem.
Don't worry.
You just didn't play it right.

In ME2 stats and skills matter little (as long as you point a gun at an enemy and pull the trigger you're golden) whereas on AP they are everything, invest heavily in guns and when fully developed guns start to kick ass, go with stealth and take out 90% of the level without being seen, go hand to hand and you can take on dudes face to face, hell it is even interesting to use gadgets and when wel developed they can kick ass. You can come into AP wthout having ever touched a shooter and play it just fine, whereas in ME2 almost all combat action is shooting, sure you have abilities, but it still comes down to mostly shooting.

In ME2 your choices mean very little and do almost nothing to change the world around you, Hell even the import  system from previous game is a joke, with the most important decision council/ambassador boiling down to a few lines of dialogue. While your choices of actions and diaogue affect everything in AP, with people getting very different endings as well as story and mission differences midgame.

Dialogue in ME2 is severly inferior. You choices boil down to: be a dick/ be a saint/ get more info.
In AP there are various intonations and stances you can take that varry with each conversation and even within a singl conversation, as well as mentioned previously what you say to peopl actually mattering i the grand scheme of things.

"kiting is effective against these guys."

Wait, so kiting is a legitimate design option in a modern game?

Man, these guys really sat down and thought about how to make this a compelling experience.

Ryan does a great job understanding this game, but I wish Dave had been playing as well. He understands RPG too. Or Vinny, to make very awkward but genuine jokes. Vinny and the main guy who was presenting this game, they would have been a great duo. A boncing romm of awkward and dorky humor that is fun. Yay!

Watching this just makes me want to go play Champions: Return to Arms again. Some parts look ok, but only 4 classes, no character customization, and only the host gaining items/exp in co-op is really killing any excitement for this.

I could not for the life of me get through this quick look. At first, I was onboard. I've been wanting someone to make a top-down action RPG as fun as Gauntlet Legends or X-Men Legends for awhile now, so I was game to check this out. Plus, they added dialogue and conversation trees to the formula - upgrade!

But jeez laweez, this is just so monotonous and repetitive-looking. I got in about a half an hour and just had to stop. It takes like 4 minutes to kill a cyclops; double that time when there were 2 of them. And they're not bosses; they're just normal enemies! The whole stupid level just goes on and on and on and looks the same. After hitting the 31 minute mark, I just started scrubbing through this video seeing if anything changed visually. Nope. Not even a little. That's just depressing. Comparing this to something like Torchlight - where levels DON'T drag on for an hour - is like night and day. And Dungeon Siege III ain't the one coming out looking good...

As far as I'm concerned, Action-RPGs should've evolved by now. This monotonous grind sh** needs to stop; just cuz their "phat loots" in there doesn't justify being a repetitive bore. Shouldn't these things have basically become multiplayer God of Wars or Devil May Crys by now? Like MK: Shaolin Monks (Still the only multiplayer "character action" game out there)? If someone were to do something like that, but with all the damn loot RPG nerds care about - and do it SUCCESSFULLY (not like Too Human; though I appreciate the effort) - we'll all care about western action RPGs here in "console-land". But this? I could not be more apathetic. Ryan - you're a trooper for sticking with these boring nerds for this long. Jeez...
