Rule #1 of post 1990's game design: NEVER force a player to replay the entire level. Otherwise looks cool and original. Just iron out those beginner's game design mistakes and they'll have a hit.
I think you mean "2000s" game design.  I distinctly remember most 90s game being all "Whats a checkpoint?"

Being a shmup and rhythm game fan, this looks very intriguing.  If there was more shmup-like components to it I'd buy day one.  For example, have the rhythm, but vary up the angle of shots so it isn't on tracks.

I totally disagree that the "number 1 rule to post 90s game design is never forcing a player to replay a whole level".

The number 1 rule to good game design is that everything you're doing should be relevant to the game experience. If replaying a whole level is relevant to the game experience, then you should replay the whole level.

The problem comes when you're forced to replay scenes in which you can't do anything differently to change your eventual outcome.

the perfect example of this is Earthworm Jim, which doesn't get enough credit these days. The first level was so modular and chock full of secrets that it was impossible to "solve" it without playing it many, many, times. This meant that replaying the first level wasn't a chore, because you used the opportunity to generate extra lives and continues which would give you a better chance later in the game.

Game design has lost the fundamentals. Never mistake what's trendy for what's best.

The one about how the story would unfold and if there was other cutscenes and such.

@Chaoticarsonist: And I go to college with him, haha. Anyway, game looks really cool, and I always enjoy when a dev reaches out and directly responds to the community.

This looks...pretty dang awesome. Music-wise, visual-wise and just being different. Seriously, the music is really great. Never noticed the background until he mentioned it, I was too mesmerized by all the glowing.

Anyway, a great Quick Look.

That is the most epileptic game I've seen since Beat Hazard.  I hope there's options in the final build to dull the colors and crazy effects, because just that quick look gave me a headache.

@Andheez: I'm one of the developers, and I can assure you that on the harder difficulty levels, it's definitely not easy. This video just shows the easier levels because the Giant Bomb crew was new to the game, and it's hard to talk and play at the same time - even for the developers.

@LiquidPrince: Sorry, I must have missed that. We are still working on the story elements, so I can't say exactly what we'll end up with in the final game. However, because we have a small team, we are focusing most of our efforts on polishing the gameplay rather than adding in a lot of cutscenes and story elements.

I can't wait for this game to come out, mainly so I can buy the shit out of the soundtrack. People praised Shatter for its soundtrack, and although Retro/Grade's soundtrack is much more subdued, I'd argue it's of the the same quality.

I found a screenshot of the old GB front page and saw this was on it and I don't remember watching it so I decided to watch it now and oh man this game looks awesome, too bad it's not released yet.
