Indie stuff is getting boring very fast. Another game that could and should be made in Flash and distributed free on Kongregate or something like that.

The best part of the video is the fact that you can hear Vinny and, I think Drew, talking in the background.

Eurgh. Agree. So agree. I mean, I love indies, and I will defend them til the day I die, but... honestly. They have the capability to make no-strings-attached, unique, original games with a purpose and a style, and they... make 2D platformers. And then when a genuinely good indie 2D platformer comes around like Closure, or a genuinely good pixel-art game comes around like Jamestown or They Bleed Pixels, and the reputation is sullied by cheap rip-off titles. It disappoints me, because indie dev scene could be so much better - and has the capability to be truly fresh! But all the freshness is leaped on and ripped apart and then games that are actually fresh are late out of the gate. This happened with FEZ - when it was announced, it was really quite unique! Then by the time it was announced enough games had ripped off FEZ that it ended up in a pool with rip-offs of itself. Bleh.

Was pretty painful to watch Patrick go through the portals in the wrong order three times in a row.

It sure is a Quick Look of a puzzle platformer.

At this point I can't imagine actually caring about a game like that.

This is the type of thing that would be cool for 5 min on a free flash games site in 2003

I'd rather play MariO than this. I'm really turned off by pixel art. It isn't cute anymore, it's just boring.

People complaining about the art style and game type have never created something themselves. Y'all need a reality check.

Man, watching Patrick repeatedly do the wrong thing over and over again was pretty frustrating.

I hope this is successful for the person who made it and all of his hopes and dreams come true.

So we need to do something in order to have an opinion about it? I need to host a podcast before I rate another one 2 stars? I should build a car before I say one is poorly designed? Should I teach a class before evaluating a teacher? Must I create my own OS before I complain about Windows Vista?

This game was actually pretty tough when I played it. It's pretty good, so I'm not sure why people are crapping on it. Sure, there's a lot of indie 2D platformers out there, but not a lot of them are metroidvanias. This game is and it's a pretty good one.

It's painful watching Patrick constantly mess up those big/small portals. And basically everything else.

Man, people hate this game.

Seems like a well made little game.

I'm starting to think Patrick doesn't know what "risk/reward" means.

The Giant Bomb guys have never made a game and they bitch about games all the time. They actually do it for a living.

What the fuck did they do to the bumper? Why does the chung chung sound sound like it is overlapped 50 times? They said they were changing it; the color is nice but the sound is shit.

Is the description to this video a Sliders reference? That just makes my heart tingle with joy.

This is always the slightly frustrating part about featuring games like this on Giant Bomb, and the reason I sometimes question whether it's worth it. Gateways isn't trying to be anything particularly revolutionary, it's just a fun, simple game with some familiar but tweaked mechanics made by an incredibly small team. I decided to share Gateways with the audience in case they like those kinds of games and might want something similar for awfully cheap. Instead, it's just a torrent of comments ripping down the game without talking about it within context, and that can be pretty disheartening.

Not trying to be a jerk, and I know plenty of you do enjoy these--only providing some of my own feedback on what's been an observation over a number of different Quick Looks regarding games in a similar category.

INFURIATING to watch Patrick repeatedly screw up the shrink/grow portals

Edit: And if you want a 2d Portal with a twist, try Mari0. Complete recreation of the first Mario game, except Mario has a portal gun. And even better, it's free.

@patrickklepek: I don't comment a lot on quick looks or even use the forums much, but I really appreciate having these types of games featured. Don't stop just because a bunch of internet commentators think they are too good for something that may be a little cliche in the indie game genre. The game looks neat and I had written it off until I saw the sort of Metroid format and denotation of where puzzle were. I actually might check this game out now.

@patrickklepek: If that's the response to Quick Looks like these, then maybe don't do them for games like this anymore?

@patrickklepek: Don't stop looking at these types of games. People on video game forums are generally the most hateful, judgmental and unpleasant people you can find. Catering to such a stupid audience is frustrating but there are a lot of us out there that do appreciate it.

@patrickklepek: It's worth it, at least to me. I've got a job and a family and I'd never find out about games like this (for good or ill) without a reliable source for previews/impressions. There just aren't enough hours in the day. Please keep 'em coming.
