Dear jeff, in your next racing game ql, please show more of the cars;behind the car, instead of the road in bumper cam or cockpit view.

Does anyone play these games in "behind the car" view? I get that it's cool to see how the cars look, but "no one" plays the game like that.

Does anyone except Jeff play these games with the bumper cam? I think it's the worst of them all. You can hardly see the track ahead of you due to how low it is usually positioned (it seems to be higher in GT6 though). And you don't get a sense for where you car is and how it's behaving. Just terrible.

Hood cam is my favorite (I think it's closer to what you'd see in a real car than cockpit views in racing games), followed by the behind-car-cam. It kind of depends on what kind of racing game I'm playing obviously.

I use the bumper cam as well, especially in games like GT. It just doesn't feel right to use anything else (besides the cockpit view) in a sim racer. I have better sense of speed and of my surroundings. I just crash less often using it.

For an end of generation product I was expecting it to look a lot better than this, those weather effects on the Nurburgring are terrible in comparison to PGR 4, a game that came out 6 years ago.

Why does all the assets look so low rez and/or low poly?

Why do the cars look like cement boxes? They don't dent, they don't crumple, they don't compact. Nothing!

Because it runs at 60 fps, as oposed to most last gen racers that ran at 30. Even Xbox 360 Forza games run at 30. This sacrifices visuals for controls. No explanation for the cars though.

Forza 2 through 5 run at 60 fps. Horizon was 30 fps.

And yet Forza, Dirt, Grid can give a comparable sense of speed and control even at 30 FPS. This doesn't give GT any reasonable excuse.

In the PS1/PS2 era, I was certain that no series would ever dethrone GT. It was leagues ahead of everything else in terms of deep mechanics and fun. Today, GT seems like a sad museum of a franchise compared to the Forza series.

My copy showed up today, currently installing the 1.01 patch...

A few notes on the quick look, the reason you couldn't take the car you bought to the Dirt stage was probably because you hadn't equipped it with dirt tires and in Drift challenges it helps to turn traction control off.

Final bit of advice, turn of Skid Force Recovery as soon as you can, it really ruins the physics model of the game and stops you from really feeling the car as you should. It's kinda like having training wheels on a bike, it means you won't fall over but you wont be able to ride it as you want either.

Ideally you want ABS on 1 and Traction Control on 0 for normal cars and 1-2 for the high powered racing cars when using the pad. Driving line as you wish but generally everything else switched off for the best experience. :)

I would not call that intro song anything other than pop rock... Current rock music isn't all that obscure, it's just there's lot of horribleness in the surface of it all. (And the emo name has been terribly bastardized, the grandparents of emo, fugazzi and stuff like la Gloria Record, are great and far more distinctive than .. whatever emo describes now).

...Still as Jeff said, it works for getting you more pumped than the slomo-crash-drama of Forza5.

....Donuts on the moon, my kind of racing game.

GT5 had a My Chemical Romance song for its intro. So the "hard rocking alternative emo core pop rock core something" has been kind of done already.

I don't play too many racing games, but I feel that the bumper cam doesn't provide enough peripheral vision and sense of the car, so I prefer behind the back. Just seems to correlate better with my experience of driving an actual car on an actual road, where you see and feel more than just straight ahead.

I guess the in cockpit can give great immersion when playing a sim, probably. Especially if you have a crazy setup with chairs and wheels.

I've never played a GT game before, and I've always been more of an arcade racing person, but arcade racers these days just aren't doing it for me. Maybe it's because I've started driving in real life a little more seriously with a better car than the grocery getter I used to drive, but I just don't like them anymore.

I'm holding off on upgrading to a PS4 for a while, so maybe I'll play this in the meantime.

Drew's been dropping a lot of those, which never seem to be noticed by the rest of the staff for some reason. The "I'm dressed as a speed bump" line from the Halloween Bombcast was amazing in it's sneakiness.

Oh yeah, it depends on the racer for sure. I always play arcade-y racers with a behind-car-cam. Games like Burnout, Need for Speed etc.

I always go with cockpit view when available, otherwise bumper cam, even if the angle is usually a bit awkward, but not as awkward as having the center of the screen blocked by the car model.

Also, I don't think car model quality has changed a lot since 2003, the things that really have seen visual improvements are the car interiors and the environments.

No matter how good this game is, I can't convince myself to get any other PS3 racing games. The PS3 controller triggers will make it as bad as trying to play a fighting game with the XBOX 360 directional pad. I will be looking forward to the next PS4 version, though.

@lechucksbeard: The best way to play Gran Turismo on a controller is with the analogue sticks anyway, right stick for for gas and breaking. Not sure why they were saying that was a silly way to play, doubt they've ever tried it.

To be honest all the people that are saying it looks like crap/boring, we already made up our minds before we even saw the game. I have never been a fan but i have huge respect for the series and obviously it has no problem moving units. I just think its a good way of showing the quality of games that sony is still going to be releasing for the ps3 and that maybe its not quite time to put that ps3 away.

This is really strange, cause I got this game in the mail today (from my rental service) and I saw a longer intro cutscene with an actual live-action video of people intensely designing cars, and footage of school kids for some reason! It was much more reminiscent of the GT5 intro craziness; I don't know why it didn't show for you guys in the QL.

tbh i do actually want to get this, probably against my better judgement. i've tried and failed to entirely get into either forza or gt on multiple occasions. but i think if i get into one of these games it will finally click and i'll get a lot of value out of it. plus i guess it's wrong that i'm a dude that knows next to nothing about cars so maybe it'd be a good way to know more about 'em:
