Sony designed the triggers on the Dualshock 3 for GT and in 5 and 6 the default is to have acceleration and braking on the face buttons. I just don't get that.

Forza 5 and 4 both used the blue-green-red 3-mode driving line indicator.

Forza 3 used the 2-mode indicator that just showed either grey for "drive this line" or red for "drive this line and slow down here". It had no way to indicate you could be going faster here.

As a pretty solid Sony fan it breaks my heart that Forza is on the Xbox (yes the new Forza blows) but Forza 3 is a damn damn solid game.
This quicklook confirms for me, that this is now the 4'th fucking game that Polyphony Digital have used the same tire squeel and engine samples in, the FOURTH - mind you that's full games, not counting all the GT HD, GT concept, GT time trial stuff.
If you pull out a PS2, fire up GT3 you will hear precisely the same sounds coming from the game and while for some, that's a small thing, I find sound completely integral to a game, it's something subliminal but really helps (Doom, Quake, amazing audio for their time, BF3 - excellent audio, Hotline Miami - utterly pumping sounds) - the audio in the GT series is nothing short of a disgrace.

Almost every aspect of the Forza series (specifically 2 and 3) is a small but subtle improvement on GT, they both have similar "sim-like, but not proper, hardcore sim" physics, they both have the championship model, many cars, great graphics but things like the rewind in Forza, excellent car audio and what I personally feel is the best rumble code in a racing game (Forza 3) - that audio / rumble is just so perfectly tuned that you really do feel as if you can 'feel the grip' of the tires despite using a simple controller.

Goddamn is it frustrating because I don't own or want an Xbox except for one game. God damn does this look just like GT5 to me, just utter stagnation.

I couldn't help but laugh the instant I opened this tab. That thumbnail tied to that specific game is still patently ridiculous to me.

Edit: Oof, it's most assuredly the blind nostalgia talking, but I thought some of the environments and water effects back in GTA3 (the last one I played) looked better than some of the stuff here. I kinda wish they built this for the PS4 instead. Still, this looks like a much less insidious and less dry of a game than Forza 5 overall.

@abrasion:

Yeah, the sound thing is a big dissapointment. The sound was by far the worst thing about GT5 (among other things, that game was such a big dissapointment to me at the time), and it's especially bad when the devs are all about a realistic driving experience.

I think I read something about them maybe patching in better sound or something? I don't know.

This game looks more fun than GT5 at least, so that's something. Everything around GT5 was pretty shit, especially the UI, which I'd say was the worst UI of that year of the games I played. It just looked like something designed for a PC game in the late 90s, just awful. I'm probably gonna give this a go, but hearing the sound in this QL...I hope they at least update that shit for GT7, which will probably be released in 2018.

The audio has been shit for over a decade, a DECADE. I loved GT3 and GT4 on the PS2, I've got such great, fond memories. I loved the music compared to Forza, just this relaxed classy piano background chillout stuff.
I'm utterly convinced they did NOT re-write the game as they claimed from GT4 -> GT5, there's just far too many similarities in the menus, how they work, the handling, the audio, the graphics. Every aspect of GT5 feels like GT4 ported and upres'd to me.

They should be embrassed as FUCK that GTA5 actually has better car engine sounds than GT and honestly, the physics aren't that bad either. If you're into cars I know this is going to sound nuts but go fire up GTA5, wait till night and steal a nice mid range car. Go into FPS view and drive up into the mountains with the headlights off, try to drive fast but reasonably safely, it's surprisingly bloody immersive and fun. I could seriously just cruise round that game for hours.

The rewind feature alone should have been copied years ago, it's fantastic btw.

This game might have been interesting if this was the year 2005. I've been playing it little by little for about a week and it's so bad. It's just GT5 with a better menu. Compared to next-gen racing games like Forza 5 or NFS Rivals it looks like an early PS2 game. I was really hoping Polyphony would get with it this time but it doesn't look like it'll ever happen, it feels like they're still living in the PS1/PS2 days.

Yeah, for how much time they spent on GT 5, it sure felt like a small upgrade in many ways. The sound was the most dissapointing aspect, but it also felt weirdly unpolished: Some tracks looked amazing, others had trees on the side of the road straight out of the PS2. Some cars looked stunning, others, again, like PS2 cars. You can talk about having 1000+ cars all you want, if so many of them looks more or less the same and looks like cars from GT4... And yeah, the menus were just awful.

But as I said, GT6 at least looks more fun. But at least from what I saw from this QL, it sure doesn't look like they fixed much of what I disliked about GT5. I just think I'm gonna wait for GT7 in a few years.

Always had a problem with the actual racing in Gran Turismo, it's always so damn boring. Forza as it's problems, but at least the racing tends to be a bit more energetic.

I always play racing games in third person view if I can help it. Played all of Grid that way. All of Dirt 2 and Dirt 3 that way. Quite frankly, I don't think games offer enough visual fidelity to make driving from cockpit view a viable alternative - your field of view is greatly diminished.

I totally respect people that want to play bumper cam or cockpit view - the game is there for you to play as you want. Just wanted to chime in that I don't think everyone plays from those perspectives in racing games.

Does anyone except Jeff play these games with the bumper cam? I think it's the worst of them all. You can hardly see the track ahead of you due to how low it is usually positioned (it seems to be higher in GT6 though). And you don't get a sense for where you car is and how it's behaving. Just terrible.

Hood cam is my favorite (I think it's closer to what you'd see in a real car than cockpit views in racing games), followed by the behind-car-cam. It kind of depends on what kind of racing game I'm playing obviously.

Oh yeah, it depends on the racer for sure. I always play arcade-y racers with a behind-car-cam. Games like Burnout, Need for Speed etc.

If you want a GT to play until you pick up a PS4 for GT7, yeah.

This game adds nothing new, many reviews rate it down for that. I wish they'd done the same with Battlefield and COD.

Man this game does not look good at all graphically. I feel like Dirt 2 (from 2009) looks better than this. Plus what's with the damage model? There is barely any damage at all, might as well leave it out like in the old games. Also, what's with the tyres screeching all the time? Can you not brake softly and take a corner nicely? Does this game not support the triggers as the accelerator and brake?

Sorry for all the criticism. The only GT game I've played is GT2 for the PS1, and I played the shit out of that game. At the time it was awesome, but there have been 4 more games in the series across 2 generations and it seems like very little has changed. Looks like the PS3 could do better than this too. Maybe it's just me.

Because it runs at 60 fps, as oposed to most last gen racers that ran at 30. Even Xbox 360 Forza games run at 30. This sacrifices visuals for controls. No explanation for the cars though.
