Quick Look: Halo Wars

RawRockKills777, aren't you getting ahead of youself? Just don't jump out a window if Giantbomb gives it a 3/5. Just because it's on console doesn't excuse the very run-of-the-mill RTS feeling I get from the game, one Ensemble is so good at giving.

Looks boring. Only for people who don't know how to play complex, real RTS's like World in Conflict, DOW, Company of Heroes, etc.

I don't even have an xbox, to be honest, im a PS3 addict, and yet I h8 u gamers for actually getting this game. It looks awesome.

Microsoft killed a perfectly good mod for PC Halo to make this shit? How disappointing. This does absolutely nothing to change my stance on the opinion that RTS games just don't work on consoles. I like RTS games, particularly simple RTS games, but this just doesn't look good, and that "all units" thing is super annoying.

If they had made this an FPS I think a lot more people would buy it.

hey don't knock them halo books, most are actually better than average. Ghosts of Onyx is one of my favorite books.

RTS will never work on consoles for 2 reasons - 1 being technical the other being audience.

On the technical side for a good and "real" rts like C&C series or SC where there are more to manage than just units (such as units AND base and economy and then some) the mouse and keyboard setup is far superior to a console's limited controller.  The keyboard allows near limitless amounts of hotkeying giving greater control.  The mouse is much faster as well as accurate compared to a controller's stick; allowing you to do more than just issue orders - it makes microing your units a breeze too. 

Until mouse and keyboard are incorporated to consoles RTS should just stay on PC.

On the audience side, since most RTS games are bunk on consoles and have largely failed to capture people's attention, most console-goers will scoff at the idea of rts, insiting they are boring.  Console RTS lack control, they lack the kind of action consolers are accustomed to, and due to the large learning curve that comes not just with learning the game and its units, but the controls as well, the games usually end up largely frustrating and very little fun on consoles.

Unfortunately, Halo Wars fails to impress me but I will reserve judgement till I rent it.

I think the notion that PC controls are better for RTS's is an old frame of mind. It's all about becoming accustomed to the controls.  I myself personally am able to play RTS's better (in general) with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse (And yes I have played a fair share of PC RTS's, going back to the original Warcraft).  I like the fact that there are only a few buttons, because then I know that the commands can only be on those buttons, or by using variations of button presses.  Some people may say that is cumbersome, but it all depends on your frame of reference. I believe that saying that is an old frame of mind, much like saying it is better to use an arcade stick for fighting games....  Just because you grew up with it, doesn't make it the best way to play for EVERYONE, just for you...

Well, that game looks like it has poor control and is generally garbage all the way around.

Holy shit, this looks absolutely horrifically terrible. What a horrendous way for Ensemble to go out. I'm speechless.

Bland environments....yeah. This game looks very cool and the controls feel fine (the demo was a lot of fun). I don't know if it is as great as many people hoped it would be, but I will certainly try to play it soon.

Not terrible looking. I liked the Demo, but not a $60 purchase for me.

I enjoyed the demo and I'll check the game out...seems pretty simple, although not always a bad thing...it is hard to justify $60 with just two factions and a handful of maps.  I can see the price on this one dropping quickly though.

Wow, anybody who bashes console's capability to house decent RTS games fail big time, in my view.

You seem to forget that historically, there were hardcore fans of specific portion of games that clung to the traditional style of gaming, trying to resist change. And what happened? Things kept changing and they had to move on. Adapt.

Today's no-RTS-on-console argument is just the same, I think. As hardcore games evolved to become (in hardcore gamer's point of view) easier to accomodate not-so-hardcore gamers to enjoy, RTS games will also do the same to survive. I think EndWar is a great example (not sure how well it's doing. Haven't pop that thing in 360 in a while). It enables gamers to show skill in managing troops, yet it perfectly utilizes consoles unique control scheme. And it is very enjoyable, too.

The notion that a RTS game has to be based on economy, base-building, and unit control is just about to become passe. Just as "having to retry 100 times or more to finish a game" became a thing of the past.

I played the demo when it released and thoroughly enjoyed.  I'll probably end up purchasing it.

I don't like RTS... I look at that and think about how fun it would be to actually be on the ground with a gun in hand, or driving the tank... RTS is the opposite of an immersive shooter.

Not into RTS games at all, but for some reason I do want to give this a shot. I think I'll give the demo a try some time.

I think I would have to play this entirely in co-op.
