Quick Look: Kinect Sports: Rivals

watching Jeff create his character was the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

They could have made a new Viva Pinata or Banjo Nuts & Bolts, but Microsoft made them make this.

Pure speculation here, but I'm guessing it's because we're exposed to far less than most other countries in the world. If you go to the middle of Europe and go like 100 miles in any direction, there's a pretty good chance that you'll be somewhere with a completely different language, let alone dialect.

In America there's basically people from the south and then everywhere else. You could make an argument about midwesterns or New Yorkers or whatever, but those stereotypes are extremely rare in my experience. I can drive a thousand miles east or west and probably 500 miles south and still find people that sound exactly like me. Not much need or potential to get good at recognizing dialects in when that's the case.

This event does not support seated play!

Watching Jeff struggle with the kinect was pretty fuckin funny.

Aw, man, this is reminding me of the Kinect launch ER, when Jeff and Ryan played awful, awful games with their greenscreen footage played...

Okay several thoughts here:

1. Yay! Kinect Quick Looks are the best! Honestly, the entire existence of this device is justified just for these.
2. I love the look of Jeff's champion. Seriously, that some cool tech right there. I'm sad that he's bummed by it. Also it looks sort of like John Candy for some reason.
3. Those loading times are lousy.
4. The water looks amazing! It's pretty easy to see this is a next-gen title just from that.
5. I don't know if I'd ever want a Kinect, but I really do like that character creation. That'd be cool in, say, Rock Band or other sports/fitness games, or even in random fantasy games.

I'm digging virtual Jeff, but virtual Vinny was disappointing. These Kinect games seem to only exist so that Giantbomb can do quicklooks of them

Ok, I just watched this and ordered the goddamn game halfway through. How the fuck did that happen?

I have a six year old kid so that's my justification.

I feel like this Quick Look taught me a lot about how Jeff acts around authority figures.

These always remind me of how foreign it is to see the bombers standing.

Hilarious QL. Jeff having to get on the ground to get his face lined up, and then the reveal of his champion was perfect. And then Vinny completely showing up Jeff at tennis and then Jeff blaming it on not going through the tutorials...priceless. Kinect Quick Looks, how I've missed thee!

this game is fucking trash. oh hilarious quicklook btw.

I think this game probably plays better if you're not being super tedious about your movements. For the bowling game it looked like actually trying to bowl had better results than doing extremely simple movements - like you would have to do with a Wiimote.

Wow, the Kinect is disappointing. With the big next gen upgrade i thought it would at least be modestly functional. I mean, maybe its not being used perfectly in Kinect Sports (Jet Skis?!? Seriously?!...i thought they were only fake prizes people won on The Price is Right), but its clearly not creating an experience that can be defined as sports or gaming.....maybe performance art?

I think the most telling statement was the suggestion one of you made, that you should just play the "Wii".

It's been a while since the last Kinect quick look. Ah, it's good to be back. That character creator is some sort of crazy computer devilry. Also David Tennant.

I've missed Kinect quick looks so much. I hope they can make a proper return at some point... Maybe alongside Game Room while we're at it? Bah, who am I kidding.

Cool to see Kinect Sports taking place on Donkey Kong Island.

I love the pop-up window at the very end saying "This Event Does Not Support Seated Play". Like, Sir, stop fucking around on the floor and play the game right!

I love how "this event doesn't support seated play" popped up as they were blasting off at the end.

Also, I'll give Rare this: the environments in the Wave Race game were pretty. As much as I think Rare were somewhat overrated all along, it bums me out that they've been turned into the Kinect studio. It must be a real bummer making the token casual game for a $500 system that's only owned by hardcore early adopters.

I am really interested in the face thing. I may get this just for that.

It's questionable whether anyone currently at Rare worked on either of those games. Rare didn't even make the new Killer Instinct, and that was an IP Microsoft acquired specifically as part of the Rare purchase.

One of the best Quick Looks this year.

Kinect Sports kinda sucks! Something about coach being the worst charecter in a video game ever, screaming "listen" over and over again til you think your fucking Navi, the kinect constantly becoming "uncalibrated", hurting your back trying to make a charecter that looks nothing like you, the complete and utter waste of the talent of both Rare and David Tennant, and the fact that you can't just play any sport you want to from the start is super disappointing!

I sooo badly wanted Vinny to make his "avateer" a woman.

Not something I'd play, but this was fun to watch, and I thought the creation for Jeff was pretty decent (though it also looked like Ryan in some ways, especially the beards).

That's a lot of tutorial for something that presents itself as a casual party game.

Also, the green screen stuff isn't mirrored now?

The game giving absolutely no feedback as Jeff whiffs 10 times in a row on a serve was the greatest. I wanted a voice to come on and say "Oh please, let me reintroduce you two. Racket meet ball, ball meet racket."
