The guys at Nigoro really went all out for this remake in my opinion. I never could get into the original version, but they changed enough of the annoying or otherwise extremely obtuse stuff that I really got hooked on the remake. There's still some overly obtuse stuff, especially near the end, but it's definitely worth the money in my opinion, especially since the puzzles sort of feel Fez-esque in terms of needing to piece together information from various areas and require players to pay attention to their surroundings.

This game is pretty great for anyone looking for a challenging metroid type game, it's 20+ hours long and has a ton content. Just be warned that several of the puzzles are hard/obscure to the point where it's feels intended to be a community effort to solve, you'll use the wiki at some point.

This game is awesome - I got addicted to the freeware version of it, which I think is still available if people want to check it out. I actually prefer the 8-bit music in that to the remakes, but it looks like they at least somewhat streamlined the gameplay.

It is definitely a bit bewildering at times though. It's much more akin to the old old Metroid game where you are just dropped in and can go anywhere. Tons of worlds, items and puzzles.

Also for those wondering, Jeff and Ryan missed a couple weight pedestals next to walls that lower the walls, and a couple of skeletons that would have told them what to do in some rooms. Pretty much everything you can read in the game helps you figure things out. With that they probably would have gotten a few of the first items.

I remember playing through this years ago. It's a great game, but I can confirm that the difficulty later in the game exceeds anything that I have ever seen. Absolutely no hyperbole.

It's always nice to hear really good old-school video game music. It's almost become kind of commonplace again due to its use in indie games, but then a game comes along that reminds you how fucking awesome it is again.

40 seconds into this video I was kinda wanting Jeff to quiet down to hear the tunes.

@BeachThunder: Their english website literally launched a few weeks ago for the release of La-Mulana. They normally translate english indie games to sell in japan, but did the opposite for La-Mulana.

Might have been an idea for Jeff to actually go and buy that tablet translating program before the QL so that they could actually get hints for some of those puzzles.

I love the new graphics for this.

Splelunky and Cave Story both look better in their original forms but this looks better with new art.

If you like this sort of game I recommend Protect Black Sun. http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-PBS/project-black-sun

Anyone interested in this game keep in mind that it is tough as hell, doesn't hold your hand or tell you your goals or where to go at anypoint, and is extremely puzzle focused. That being said it really is a great game for fans of metroid-vania style platformers.

IWBTG was at least predictable. enemies, and obstacles were always the same, and you could build up the skills necessary through repetition. This game has the most dickish enemies to keep you on your feet late in the game. I almost gave up on it on several occasions. It may even border on being a bit unfair, but I still like it.

Yeah, plus the difficulty in this is far different from all the games people normally bring up when you discuss "difficult" games. The platforming and enemies are hard at times, the bosses are a bitch like you would see out of the worst 8-bit game out there, and health and resources are low enough that you have to be careful.

But the real difficulty is in the puzzles, exploration, and simply figuring out what to do. It's like Fez on steroids with far more puzzles, as well as the metroidvania item collection layered on top. The hints are there for you to puzzle it all out, but it's fiendishly difficult and can elude you for quite a while. The person who can get through it without consulting a wiki once or twice is a better man than I.

Arghh watching Jeff "mouse over" the unread email everytime he went in his inbox is so annoying... I wonder if it's because he's had a tough time seeing that shade of red? It was quite obvious that one of the email was unread.

Been playing this for a few hours and making progress slowly. It's one of those games where you'll have a brainwave when not playing it, solve a puzzle, get stuck and go "FUCK THIS GAME!!!" and then repeat process.

An amazing experience, but only really for fans of Fez and Dark Souls? I dunno.

I like that the laptop is called the "MobileSuperX", the original game being basically the worlds biggest love story to the MSX console (and your original computer interface actually being a MSX).
