Quick Look: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

People need to realize how that timer works and that action games are never that long if they are doing their job right. God of War 1, DMC1, Vanquish, viewtiful Joe, Gears of War and DMC3 can all be cleared in just a few hours somewhere around 6 hours is the average. Did you see how long it took for Brad to clear missions in DMC1? Some took him 4 minutes.

These games aren't meant to be these 40 hour long Assassins Creed games that drag because the devs don't come up with cool things to do, they are meant to be focused, replayable, fun, and exciting. There is nothing wrong with paying full price for a game that delivers rock hard mechanics.

I am a fan of Platinum and Metal gear!!!! So I will def get this when it gets cheap... for now DMC is next up on my list.

@nottle: 16 hours ? All I know is that I can't think of any game like this that I've beaten in one afternoon on my first playthrough. According to HLTB most of these type of games have an average of 10+ hours for a normal main story playthrough.

This game seems pretty cool, but 4 hours is not enough for me to spend regular price on it.

I'm not a fan of Hack and Slash games and it looks like this won't change my mind.

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a Jackal. That will be the last time I watch videos in HD on the site. The framerate is awful on my PC not sure what's going on. Obviously want to play this and the next Metal Gear game. Not sure if I'm willing to pony up a full 60 for what is essentially a side story. Love me some Platinum games and Metal Gear craziness but you know what? Let's just say the economy is rough now. Thanks for the video.

Metal Gear Gaiden, 4 hours is not value for money. Really surprised at the score

I feel like this is a game that I will buy in a couple months for $20 and spend a weekend enjoying.

Okay, this looks pretty decent. It wasn't what I wanted out of Metal Gear, but this seems like a quality enough side story.

I will admit though, I've never been a fan of "mecha" Raiden. I thought he was perfectly fine in MGS2, and I felt like MGS4 stole away anything interesting about his personality. They kinda went too far in the wrong direction to "compensate" for his weakness in MGS2. The gravely voice he's trying to pull off is just silly too.

I never understood why people liked Metal Gear. It all seems so silly to me.

Jeff mentioned on Tumblr that they did not send out advanced copies to outlets that didn't attend a multiplayer event that they held some months ago.

What is up with Brad lately? Why doesn't he let Jeff SPEAK?

I was iffy on this game but this quick look sealed the deal in about 50 seconds. Not sure if I'll buy at $60 but probably $40.

I love how Brad always shuns PS3 versions of games. Bayonetta was an exemption. Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns and Revengeance were all lead PS3 games and run great.

I love a good character action game even though I have no idea what's happening in the story. This looks pretty fun.

According to Digitalfoundry, the PS3 version of MGR has some performance issues. Cutscenes look a bit sharper than on 360 though.

Well I'm sold. I wonder if I'll be able to enjoy/understand the story though. I've never been able to get into Metal Gear before.

This game seems to be the embodiment of style over substance, but it doesn't get much more stylish then this.

Why do the bodies and blood disappear after 3 seconds? This game could have been so much cooler. Also the graphics are shit. Look at that police car model.

Yea, this game just doesnt look good to me. Combat looks like shit. There doesnt seem to be a lot of impact to anything. Swinging a nerf bat.

I'm more of a Platinum fan than a Metal Gear fan, and like Jeff was saying, this might be a bit shallow for me. I'll definitely check it out, but I don't see it sitting in my gaming Pantheon with Bayonetta and Vanquish.

I didn't see any watermelons being sliced up by Raiden.

4 hours is one sitting on a weekend. Jeff's gotten so cynical with his standards.

I can certainly live with out the crappy music during combat.

Just worth noting that Jeff is slightly wrong about the difficulty settings. There's five, not four settings. "Normal" is actually the second easiest mode. Hard, Very Hard, and Revengeance difficulties are where the game becomes way more difficult, changes up enemy attacks, placements, and patterns, and punishes the sort of button mashing Jeff was talking about. Reviews and impressions from people who started on Hard mode said that it took them 7-10 hours to beat the game, not 4 hours.

Should I have played MGS4 before this? And for that matter MGS3? I loved 1 and 2 but fell off the wagon after that for some reason, I have 4, but haven't started it yet.

All the talk about the length of this game made me go look at my last Ninja Gaiden playthrough. Close to 11 hours, says my playlist. Possibly with some editing included. And that game just does not get boring, so I definitely have reason to expect a lot of content from a solid action game.

That said, this looks fun enough that I definitely want to pick it up once the price drops a bit (or I get a goddamn job). I knew this from the very first QL and this one just confirms what I thought back then.

Yes they tell you exactly which arms have the data in them... Notice how the arm was glowing green when in blade mode and the marker while in augmented vision.

I also had enemies fading out at that exact spot and yes the end fight is ridiculous.

My experience watching video in these quick looks is that the quality starts out okay, though the video hitches up a lot, which is terrible and annoying. Then the quality gets absolutely dreadful, though the hitching stops.

It's not worth it to watch one of these things if the video quality is that bad. A 240p video on Youtube is gorgeous compared to this quick look. I have a 5-6 year old imac, running OS X version 10.6.8 in Firefox.

Game looks good enough for a buy too me.

There has been some negative talk about Revengeance's length. My first play-through was on hard and clocked in at nine hours, the second on very hard at about the same. What is important beyond numbers is that there's no flab - every single level is long, varied and earns its place.

You should play MGS3 because it's the best in the series, and a damn fine game just in general, regardless of if it's required for MGR:R. ;)

For those wondering, my best game time sans cut scenes in DmC "hard mode" (Nephilim) is about an hour, and 55 minutes.
