How did you lose your own house? Just press F3 and.. oooh. :P

Why are there no hunger and XP bars? Is it THAT old a build? So no enchants, potions, strongholds, melons, endermen, ...?

Its fun and can last a long time.

They will pump out free updates to get it inline with the PC, and release mods and what not.

Also I totally see the appeal of this version, I know plenty of dudes who have been interested in what they have heard and seen of Minecraft but would never touch a PC with the purpose of playing a Vidja game. Makes sense.

But it also seems to be based on a version of Minecraft that is almost a full year old. The entire reason this probably looks more polished is because it looks like the team that ported it said, "Okay, we'll just polish up v0.9.8 and release that."  This looks like a version of Minecraft before the new lighting engine, villages, EXP, hunger, endermen, strongholds, pistons, swamps, jungles, or jeeze, even biomes in general, really.
Except it has better basic usability like fucking crafting recipes.

None of the things you mentioned actually improved the game with the exception of maybe pistons and lightning. They're all just pointless details that don't add anything truly interesting or new to a game that is a chore to play and could easily be made better with a few simple changes.

@LordXavierBritish: Oh the updates do add quite a bit. Villages will randomly spawn and the biomes add different landscapes and places to explore. When underground the strongholds make a fun and different place to encounter enemies (not just empty boring caverns) as well as the giant crevices. It adds some geometry to the game, which although not changing the game drastically, improves the content. The EXP you get can imbue weapons with magical properties, you can now craft potions that will do different things. Different logic gates have been added since this Xbox version allowing people to make elaborate machines. I think all of them improves the game. Looking back this this version of minecraft I can say it has for me.

@LordXavierBritish: Those changes may not be as simple as they are at face value. For instance, the maps need to take it's time because it looks through the entire world and updates it chunk by chunk.

With the mods, what variables were you looking to change?

As for the item system, i agree they could do better. When crafting though it was always fun, when i started to play minecraft, to see what different combinations would do. It seemed reasonable since the game was based on exploration and freedom.

@Wholemeal: Combat in Minecraft boring as fuck, I don't understand how anyone could seriously enjoy fighting monsters in Minecraft.

The only updates Minecraft ever has that are actually significant are when they add new tools for building to the game. They spend more time on stupid shit like NPC villages that don't do anything for the game whatsoever instead of fixing real issues the game has had for months.

Crafting recipes.  A not shit map. Any way to change the variables of the game without fucking modding it. A better system for item management, descriptions, and armor/weapon statistics that don't require you to have a wiki page open. Making it good.
Either you have a wiki page open or you have all the wiki information in the game. Minecraft isn't so resource intensive that you can't run it with a web browser open in the background. While I admit it would be nice if I didn't have to go for a wiki for that information, I really don't mind it, either.

I can't imagine how item management could be any better. If you think managing an inventory in Minecraft is difficult as it is right now, I don't really know what to tell you, because it's basically the sort of inventory system these games have. You look at something like Diablo, and it has a very similar inventory system. At least stuff in Minecraft stacks for the most part.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "changing variables". There's plenty of options of graphics settings, how difficult you want the game to be, and so on. If you want to turn specific types of monsters on or off, well, okay, I guess. But it's not like you can turn just Goombas off in Super Mario Bros, either.  That's just how it is. Not really worth getting angry about it.

I'll give you the map. I've never used a map; like Jeff demonstrates, its easier to just build landmarks yourself if you want to mark important locations.

As for whether the things I mentioned improved the game or not is down to personal opinion; personally, I love the biomes idea and having more locale variety is always a welcome addition in a game where a large portion of it is based on exploration and gathering resources. And while I could probably do without hunger, EXP is a great idea, because it forces you to evaluate your own strength versus having enchanted gear with special abilities.

@BlazeHedgehog: "You can have a browser open" is an excuse, a game that costs nearly $30 and has been in development for this long doesn't get to use that excuse. There is absolutely no reason crafting recipes shouldn't be in the game. That's just a dumb oversight that could easily be fixed if they actually took the time to do it.

And when I say variables I mean things like fluid dynamics, xp, hunger, etc. I want to be able to just flip a switch to play the game how I want to play it, not have to be bogged down with all their needless mechanical "improvements" just because I want to have monsters spawn.

And any time they spend adding to the combat is time wasted because fighting shit in Minecraft isn't fun and it never will be.

Agreed about finding the crafting to be better in Terraria as there's a lot of useful things (grapple hook, jet boots & few other things to make the game quicker to get around), but this does look interesting to see some of the stuff people make in it. Half expected Jeff to accidentally burn his house some with the random fires when dark which is way more dark then Terraria at night. Will probably get this as I can have more fun with this over Trials Evolution as I know at some point I will just hit a wall of what I could do in that game where here I can try some interesting things that were a little harder in 2d Terraria to build. Did love the unexpected encounter in the quick look to just be a new puzzle to figure out what the hell was changed.

Too bad there's not a ultra nightmare difficulty mode where you have to either go in your house at night or (what I learned from Terraria) wall yourself in a small area to protect from the monsters that will just massively kill every living thing outdoors. Imagine some crazy higher detailed Doom 1 monsters coming in to just warp with the level of reality.

At least if nothing else this QL is a great tip for people like me who are new to Minecraft & making towers to find your way outside. As with Terraria, I hope that Jeff & Brad along with anyone else in GB who are playing this give some kind of update on the crazy they might be seeing (in their game or friend's games) during the bombcasts if not a video.
