Yeah the music is garbage. It was cute for the first game but now it makes my ears hurt.

As much as it would be cool for them to be a bit more ambitious with these games I do think NSMB and NSMB Wii are two of the best game's I've played in years.

I understand getting bored of the visual style and some of the outdated systems but the game play and level design are near perfect.

The 3D character models on a 2D plain really annoys me, the sprite-based games looked so much more unique. The 3D models look bland and uninspired.

Yep, they've officially stretched this "series" way too thin. There have been, what, three or four releases of "new super mario brothers", with another one on the way for the Wii U? It's just way too much.

And that music really has to go. I see I'm not the only one who finds the "wah, wah" to be just a little bit annoying and jarring to the experience. I know they're practically parodying Mario at this point, but it wouldn't hurt to at least make some attempts at taking the game and atmosphere seriously.

I would love a "New Super Mario World" though. That game actually had some proper advancements to the series that really aught to be taken advantage of with this style of game. Mario as a non-linear, world-exploring experience was a great thing that they've thrown out these last few years.

I have to agree. Plus they have the 3D "physics" tacked alongside it, and it just doesn't feel or control as good as the originals. They might as well go full on sprite here; nothing wrong with sprites.

Did they really have to use the SAME exact music from New Super Mario Bros Wii? Jesus Christ. That's my biggest gripe with this game. It's just rehash visually and audibly. You would think that developers would know when they've released the same game too many times over but they seem to be the ONLY ones oblivious to it.

...Or maybe the do know. Maybe they know that people will buy a game with Mario in the title no matter what. Just like Jeff and Brad's conversation about whether or not they would buy a game New Super Mario Bros game with a cape. Jeff knows he would be falling for the same bullshit but he admits that he would buy the game regardless. Don''t let them grab you by the balls like that.

They just want some more of that dosh - not that there's anything wrong with that! They are a business, after all. If a product sells and earns them a profit, then there is nothing wrong with that financially.

Actually, yes, they are. It's what allows them to come up with stuff no one else has thought up; but it's what also keeps them behind when the Western game industry went towards online and other stuff and Nintendo never even noticed it.

Jeff & Brad didn't really articulate what makes World a fundamentally different game - it's the level design and physics, basically. NSMB Mario has a ton of inertia. He's a lot less responsive than in SMB 2/3/World. For a more recent comparison, try Yoshi's Island DS, which is super snappy and ultra-responsive, and then try NSMB, where Mario is much slower and less agile. NSMB handles more like SMB 1 in this respect, and while it does add challenge, it's not really as much fun as a game with sharper controls.

Also, levels in Super Mario World tended to be more open-ended and have a lot of vertical screen movement. They were laid out in a more sandbox-like fashion, and less frequently like an obstacle course. The timer was inconsequential, and you were encouraged to just screw around, instead of trucking right to the end. World had more exploration, and more non-critical paths within a level.

DS version was unplayable because the button config didn't allow for natural position of the middle of thumb resting on A or B for run and then X or Y for jump.  I hope the blockheads have sorted that.

The original DS NSMB?  You can switch the buttons in the game options, Blockhead ;)  
edit:  Wait, nevermind - I'm the blockhead.  I'd misread the button order you're looking for, and they do only allow them to be flipped on one axis.   We seem to have vastly different ideas of what feels natural, though!

O man, that co-op does not make me feel good about the Wii-U. Nintendo still has no idea how this stuff is suppose to work.
