Everyone should check out and play through the 12 Angry Testscollection of user maps. They're an incredible narrative series of 6 levels/12 tests that even have a boss fight and ending.

This level editor is really impressive and simple to use. The panel extrusion concept is genius. While Ryan had some trouble, given the short time he spent with it this video actually a good demonstration of the tool. Inside of 10 or so minutes he was able to get a basic understanding of the way you manipulate the space, create something and iterate on it. He had low expectations but I think given an hour he could make a decent puzzle.

I beat most of the community levels they found before this video went up, and thought they were really difficult, but they're all solvable.

WATCHING THIS AS A 6 YEAR HAMMER EDITOR USER MAKES ME VERY UPSET.

Its cool that they would put out a simplified editor like this, but seriously. People have been making custom source engine maps for ever. This isn't Gods gift to Valve then Valves gift to gamers.

Having just solved today the community puzzle they started on, watching them solve it was pretty infuriating. :P I really love the map editor: Just published my first test chamber today after extensive playtesting on my part.

The 12 Angry Test series are definitely made in Hammer and not in this new editor but they're WAAAAY better than any other levels.

@Zidd: For sure, I was mostly commenting on Ryan's misunderstanding of how mapping works, even in an extremely simplified form. I am glad they made this, and made it a lot better then what they did for Alien Swarm. But I don't understand how this helps people get closer to the hammer editor, it lets people makes maps quickly, and fairly well, but it doesn't expand their understanding of brush work or really anything that would be required for using hammer properly.

@thomascaret: Hammer makes even the simplest task say hooking a button up to a door incredibly complicated with juggling multiple entities, models and triggers. I haven't used source hammer a lot but I used old hammer quite a bit and thats how you would accomplish it there. Valves tools are incredibly janky and counterintuitive compared to say UDK or Unity. I was surprised at how fast they seemed to pick it up and figure it out though.

The ease-of-use and general interface of this Perpetual Testing Initiative editor have really impressed me. Plus, Portal's sense of humor is still amazing.

Also, , you're a naughty, naughty person. Who may have created the most brilliant "dirty" map ever. I particularly loved the Deadly Premonition music and "quotes" from major gaming publications.

When did Cntrl become the default keybind for crouch? Maybe it's just my small hands but i find moving my pinky over to Cntrl to be pretty cumbersom, in every PC shooter that does that i always change it to C since that makes more sense.

I saw Dave tweet about the new player saving preferences properly, now. Unfortunately, I don't know what preferences it would be saving. The quality options before playing don't do anything, and there are no quality options at all after playback has started.

Its been like that forever, at least for me. And I thought my hands were small, but I hate using C. Also using your pinky lets you move around with the WASD since C I assume you would use one of the 3 fingers you would use for the WASD. I suppose this is why also because I don't like toggling crouch and instead like to hold it.

I use ctrl+c to ready my crouch and then hit WASD simultaneously to begin crouching.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that ever since games started having the crouching option, most have either used C or Ctrl, I can't think of any game doing one of them long before another did the other (System Shock 1 and 2 used the S key though).

Yeah, I've had nothing but problems since they switched to the Gamespot player, it can't get to 720p for some reason, randomly plays other videos than I wanted, and it feels a lot slower than the old player - the video hangs for a couple of seconds once every minute or so, something that only used to happen to me in the justin.tv player before, but never the GB player.

@fisk0: This won't help everyone, but the HTML5 player seems to be uncraptified, which makes no sense as I thought they were using the same source video, so I guess the new flash player must be doing some weird stretching or aliasing.

So, if anyone else is disappointed with the new player, and are a subscriber, load up in chrome.

The new level editor reminds me of the fantastic Descent Mission Builder that was bundled with Descent Definitive Collection and Descent: Levels of the World. Also very easy to use, especially for it's time, and you could create impossible geometry with ease, having two separate rooms occupying the same space and all that stuff.

Because there's very little point in replaying puzzle-ish games the first few years after finishing them?
