really disappointed to hear about lack of destruction.  I remember playing the first Red Faction multiplayer and just making trenches with rocket launchers.

This seems like a downgrade from the last game, honestly, which is sad. Plus, I can't believe they took out the competitive MP they had in Guerilla, which was a ton of fun.

So, lots of bitching about the game within the first five minutes. Also, Jeff says that he doesn't like the bugs of this game being refered as '' aliens. ''

And according to his logic, he says that since the humans are born on mars, these things shouldn't be refered as aliens. Well, if an alien is born on Earth, for instance, does it make it an Earthling? No, I don't think so.

Same goes for the martian bugs ; they're still alien, even if you're on their planet, they're alien to you.

Logic, Jeff. Logic.

I don't know. I typically really like Volition's work but everything that I thought was interesting about RF:G seems to have been removed and replaced with something not interesting.

My biggest gripe with the demo was that the enemies don't actually do anything when your fighting them. They just sit there on the walls waiting for you to shoot them while rarely shooting back.

The idea was so promising. RF:G would have been amazing if it was a little more structured and streamlined. And that magnet gun looked awesome. Too bad.

Volition's never made a game I enjoyed. This doesn't seem to be bucking that trend. Tons of promising ideas with poor execution is practically the company's MO.

I absolutely loved Red Faction: Guerrilla, especially the multiplayer. It was classed based in a way (with the backpacks), and the fact that you could switch out backpacks on the battlefield made for some great and innovative gameplay. Unfortunately the multiplayer doesn't return, and the game in general just doesn't look fun. I was looking forward to this title from the day it was announced. After playing the demo I was very soured. Volition is one of my favorite developers, and they really let me down this time. Hopefully Saint's Row 3 will satisfy.

Stop bitching and try 'hard' if that's the case... then you may need to dig into the game mechanics more also!

Same here. Every piece of news that came out since only served to diminish my interest.
I downloaded but haven't tried the demo yet, and to be honest I'm not all that excited to try it.

I never really got into  Guerrilla, but it seems odd that considering how successful that was, that they went in almost the totally opposite direction with this.  It would have been fun to see them take the destruction elements a step further or maybe just set it in a more interesting location.

Thanks guys, I was curious about this one and you've let me know all I needed to know. It seems like Volition doesn't even understand what makes their games fun. They spend all this development time on their technology and then hardly use it? I'll pass on this one.

I see a lot of complaining about the various aspects in which this game didn't live up to expectations, but even after finishing L.A. Noire the guys at GiantBomb still trip over themselves to praise it. I'm starting to seriously doubt some of the reviews and quick looks put out lately.

After playing the demo I don't see any reason why RF:A wouldn't be a fun 3rd person shooter with a cool setting and brilliant weapons.

From what I've seen of this game so far:

  • Graphically, it looks terrific. The lighting is excellent, and I really like how fire casts shadows off of the cave's bumpy walls and floor. The game also looks surprisingly colorful, which is not something you would expect in a game about Mars. The way the enemies glow and bleed, as gruesome as it sounds, is quite lovely.
  • Manipulating the environment still looks as fun as it did in the previous Red Faction games, but I would have liked to seen a dynamic cover system, in which you would take the magnet gun and toss a chunk from a nearby building down in front of you, and proceed to use it as cover. But the way everything just "crumbles" makes everything look too weak.

A cover system would be excellent, especially a dynamic one.

Really annoyed by all the pessimism surrounding this game. Played the demo at least 10 times. And what the hell do they mean destruction isn't the focus? It's constantly happening around you in battle. Whatever. What bums me out most is that people will watch this and write off the game completely.

I fee like the gameplay on its own merits is alright.  The visuals seem interesting and the tech is there.  However I feel like the main problem with this game comes to the "go here and shoot this for a while but then here comes sequence breaker" design.  Feels very average and an old way of structuring a shooting video game.  Guerrilla was where it was at with GeoMod and it's a damn shame they eschew that for something more traditional, not less.  If Armageddon had taken a page from the Just Cause school of game design, this game could have been everything Guerrilla should have been and more.

The question is do you want a competent, somewhat interesting, but ultimately unambitious and rote 3rd person shooter?  Aside from the persistence element and presence of GeoMod there's literally nothing to distinguish this as anything but just another video game.  Whoever is Volition's creative and design team needs to feel those mixed reviews hard because its their fault for throwing what could have been a great game under the bus.

Brad complains its too easy right before nearly dying, Brad claims ammo is everywhere and the magnet gun isn't needed, then runs out of ammo and loads another save. Complain that destruction is never really needed then load to a point where its mission mandatory. Seems like operator error is the problem here.

In all honesty, I found all Red Faction games to be slightly boring. Cool concepts but just the design and execution make it boring.

Also, wow no wonder they think it's boring. They're playing it in the most mundane way possible. Stop using the damn assault rifle.
