Quick Look: Rogue Legacy

How about instead of calling it a Rogue-Lite we call it a 10 Mil Like? It's got characteristics found in 10 Million, the critically acclaimed iOS endless runner match 3 RPG, probably more of those than that a Roguelike. After all, making meta progress from a run in a roguelike isn't a thing whereas in 10,000,000 that's the whole thing.

The cellar door thing is way older than Donnie Darko. At least 100 years old.

Forget the oversimplification of hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, vertigo (a real condition folks), peripheral arterial disease, infertility (and puberty-shortening) inducing hypergonadism, dextrocardia (also a serious condition), tourettes...BUT OMG they mentioned gay as a trait!!!

It's almost as if people want to get offended these days...for all the intents and purposes they put that in, homosexuality is not a condition and I see no real slander against gays in this game. Neither against the conditions but a gross oversimplification of i.e. dylexia.

I have Dextrocardia and im fucking offended! People are making a big deal out of the gay trait when its us right sided heart people who should be pissed.

Actually i had to check that twice when i heard it as i thought i was in lala land, dont normally hear about congenital heart defects at all so good on them. Im sure my heart is pissed about being stereotyped for being on the wrong side of my body when the majority of the world has it the other way.

Game looks great and think i will pick this up as it seems neat.

@spunkyhepanda: I just think that the joke is "hey, you're character's gay. Isn't that just hilarious?" If they had done something interesting with it or had it affect gameplay in a clever way, I'd be fine with it. As is, it just feels straight lazy and baffling that they decided to just put it in with no justification.

As a bald person I'm offended that baldness is a trait as it implies a hairy-normative world view which is rather problematic.

This game looks pretty fun. Gonna have to pick it up while it's $10.

I'd been putting off playing the demo for this, but the pre-order stuff ends pretty soon so I gave it a shot tonight. Normally I'm not into actual rogue-likes, but between the encouragement of some persistence and the wonderful controls, the demo hooked me. Bought in, and now I can't wait for Thursday!

This is the second game I've bought after watching a quick look, the first being Cook, Serve, Delicious!

Hope I like this one as much as I liked that one.

This actually looks way cooler than I expected. Not much for indie business, but I might actually give this a shot once it hits Steam.

@spunkyhepanda: Then I don't know why is it even there. If they really just did it in seriousness, then Nixitur is dead on. Making only one orientation a trait implies that it's abnormal. This whole thing is just out of place.

The Joke is that being gay doesn't give you any weakness or anything; you're just gay.

It's there because they wanted to be inclusive, but I agree that it's a bit misguided.

This game is awesome, I just pre-purchased after watching the quick look, and I've been playing the demo since.

5 minutes of this QL was all I needed to see. Definitely buying this. There's been a rogue-like shaped hole in my heart ever since I finished the full 400 achievement points in Spelunky.

Maybe they added it in but gave it no effect to show off that gay people are people first and foremost, who just happen to be like the same sex. Though adding it at all is too bad because it is not as if every other character is deliberately labeled as straight or bi or asexual. Also "Rogue-Lite" is a nice little term.

Rogue-Lite and Roguelike work because they are simple and sound pretty good. 10 Mil Like is very cumbersome and left me confused upon first reading the word instead of understanding or at least curious. Though I'd like to take your post as a joke.

Also it seems like there must have been alot of inbreeding in this family of knights.

"Gay" was probably a perk that means that the hero won't have biological children, so the ability of the heirs to receive traits from the hero are likely limited. That is what I think it means.

@nixitur: @spunkyhepanda: I suppose this passively accepts a hetero-normative view but I dont think it promotes it. I think it works to destroy the hetero-normative view by including homosexuality without judgement. The description is just cute in keeping with the tone of the game.

This game seems really awesome, and I'm going to actually preorder something for once because of this video.

To add into the current zeitgeist, yeah I thought the gay trait was kind of weird. More so when I thought that the character was unusually thin/svelte because of it, then I noticed the actual trait causing that. Though honestly, I was kind of more uncomfortable with the dyslexia trait. And a bit with the color blindness, though that may be from proximity on this site.

I really like the concept and ideas of this game but not so much the execution. The goofy humor isn't really to my taste and it bugs the shit out of me when pixel art games have non-pixel art menus and fonts. Keep the art style consistent!

Probably going to buy anyway because it seems like a lot of fun.

This looks fun. The 'legacy' and 'family' ideas are appealing with all the Game of Thrones excitement these days.

Yeah, I don't think being gay affects the children's traits at all in the game. Based on what I saw in the demo, every trait is randomly selected with the three choices of descendants you have. It also looks like they changed the description of the gay trait, which in the demo reads "You're fabulous!" I think they (rightfully) altered that based on feedback.

Looks way more awesome than it should be. I just bought it.

Very psyched about this! Also an excellent time to release this, as I have been waiting for a new metroidvania game for a while. Pre-ordered it.
