Quick Look: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable

 Honestly, having played P3 FES, I'm currently enjoying playing P3P more than I did the PS2 version. The gameplay changes are convenient, but the biggest thing is that being able to social link with all the party members in the girl's route adds more of the connection to/between the characters I always felt was missing in P3, particularly compared to P4. I'd definitely value the additional social link and story stuff  plus ability to control party members in battle and not get tired during Tartarus runs over the animated cutscenes, smoother loading, and ability to walk around the same places hundreds of times with no Square Button fast travel.   (Maybe part of it is that I like having the option to play as girl because I am one, I don't know.) "

I love that Vinny and Jeff are doing this QL. The right people for the job.

Unfortunate that Jeff doesn't give the cast even the slightest chance to impress him. Sure, it's not the P4 dudes, but they could still grow on you.
 
And even though Persona 4 is definitely the better game, having improved on a lot of what Persona 3 first introduced, it's still a game worth playing.

Weird to see them with 'real' weapons so early as opposed to golf clubs and such.

Good memories with this QL. Doubt an ER will come out of this, but it might be fun if they dipped back into the game every now and then with another QL or two.

I feel obligated to watch the first Endurance Run before watching this...damnit!

I just can't understand the endless stream of "this is like a lame version of P4!" comments from Jeff and Vinny every time they talk about P3. Surely as professionals in game coverage they're familiar with the scenario of a game being very similar to, but not as good as, its sequel. They seem so unnecessarily antagonistic.

I don't know why that was funny, just Vinny's tone there. Like it even matters if there's one save or not for a quick look.

dude shut your ass up. they just fell in love with persona 4 so much that new characters in a persona story seems very weird for them "

This basically feels like a commercial for the Persona 4 Endurance Run.  It was totally hilarious to hear Jeff start to break down as he fell back into old habits from that soul crushing experience.  Bravo sirs!  I could care less if you do another endurance run as long as you keep being awesome.

Thank God for a lack of Bufus.

Also to address a couple things said in the video:
 
Getting tired in the dungeon - the characters' status no longer changes, you can fight and use the heal/save station forever without actually getting "tired".  They just say they are tired, but nothing really changes.  I have been playing the game and only spend one night a month in Tartarus, get to the next blocked floor and check out.
 
The Skillcards - once the persona hits that level, you get a physical item, the skill card, that can be 'used' on any of your personae to give them that skill.  I wish you could give them to your party member's personae but its just for yours.
 
Finally- if you put your PSP to sleep, the Data Install option can get set to off, and you will have to go into the config like they did to turn it back on.  When on, the load times are under a second almost everywhere.

Around 11:20 -- I'm pretty sure Jeff says "REAL BATTLES!!" in mid-yawn.

As much as I love P3, an Endurance Run of this would not be a great idea. The reason why P4 made for such a great ER is because of the amount of humor and lightheartedness that was in the game. P3 is much, much darker and has very little humor and it wouldn't be as much fun to watch them play it.
 
Also: Is it just me, or has Jeff been a real downer lately? He hasn't been as lighthearted and fun-loving as he usually is. I'd almost say that he's been like this since they've moved into the new office. I hope nothing is going wrong over there. :(

"At what point does someone show up and start with "...you stupid bitch...!'" Makes me wanna rewatch the P4 endurance run while playing P3P.

Looking at this is turning me off buying P3P.
I'm playing Persona 3 on the PS2 at the moment and I'm loving it, but the key thing is that it is just different enough from Persona 4 both stylistically and mechanically that I am willing to put in another 80+ hours.
The removal of animated cutscenes and the still-frames on free-roam are one thing, but changing some of the game mechanics to be identical to those of Persona 4 is really what removes the distinctive feel of Persona 3 and, by removing that feel, I lose interest.

This game is cool, but P4 is much much better. Can't wait for a PS3 Persona!

I want to play this, but don't own a PSP, and I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon.

this game i s as long as the original lasting at least 75 hours. 

I might buy this game sometime this year or next year, because I am currently playing a lot of starcraft 2 :)

I'm already liking the music in this game more than the music in Persona 4. I might have to get a copy soon, although on the PS2 seeing as how I don't have a PSP.

Shooting yourself in the head is so much cooler than hitting a card... But I liked the look of P4 more. Don't feel like I should actually play it after seeing ER though...
