Kind of a weird thing to stick on, but I really wish the digital clock progressed. It just seems so out of place in such a gorgeously rendered house.

I really hope it turns out to be great. To me, Silent Hill is a third-person series (I haven't played anything past 2), so the perspective puts me off a little bit, but so far it looks very promising.

EDIT: I wish it had fewer jump scares. These weren't at all prevalent in the good earlier SH games.

One day, I'll play this demo. Or watch this video.

But I'll probably do neither unless I see the video outside at the beach or something.

Lol, these are always fun. Patrick is so easy to get worked up. Wouldnt be entertaining if he wasnt though! Im calling it now, he will have a heart attack playing a horror game on the Oculus Rift 2.0. Nice graphics on this, REALLY great to see some actual next gen games, as well as seeing Silent Hill get at least a AA level of polish! Not be some third tier game no one gives a shit about. Though I actually loved Downpour :-/

The digital clock not progressing is used to signify the fact that time is not changing, reality is changing (or at least, your perception of it). The talking bag tells you straight up that the gap in the door is a separate reality.

@conciliator: @lackingsaint: @selfconfessedcynic: I think it should have been like Groundhog Day--there's a comparison I never thought I'd make--in that time should progress but it resets as soon as you recross the threshold. If they didn't want to do that, at least make the divider blink. Anything so it isn't a static texture.

I don't remember if it was on Joystiq or Polygon, but Kojima had a lot of really interesting things to say about making this; in particular that they intentionally didn't make it look as good as they could of so that they could get away with the pretense that it came from an unknown indie studio. In light of how fantastic it looked this is a) crazy and b) super exciting.

I can't wait to see what shape the final product takes, and to watch Patrick play it, because I'm sure as hell not brave enough to.

this was fucking phenomenal for like the first 45 minutes. I was 100% invested. After the dumb random puzzle shit came it to play though, he goes through the same stuff over and over again, the magic is kind of gone. Really a shame. The first half was fucking terrifying.

Also, it does progress at a point in the video (goes to 0000 from memory) - it's stuck on one time for a reason.

In the early days of 911 (70s and early 80s) it was pretty much universally called "nine-eleven". And based on the photos scattered around that hallway, I'm willing to bet this game is set in the 70s. The authorities later started a deliberate campaign to get everyone to refer to 911 as "nine-one-one" because dumbshits were looking for the eleven on their phone. I'm not even joking.

I remember when I was a kid in the early 80s and it took them forever to roll out 911 service in my area, we didn't get it until '86 or something. Before that you had to know the fucking phone number of your local police station.

@fapathy: Here's how I just did it:

After the clock struck 00:00 I wandered around until I found the ghost and got "posessed". Then I ran around looking at all the "important" objects (clock, phone, baby, radio) while going "Hello? Hello?" almost constantly until I heard the laugh. Then I repeated that step until I got a second laugh, then I immediately froze in place just looking around. Controller started to vibrate, I got the third laugh and then the phone rang.

I'm pretty sure the yellow screen that says "I'll call later" was the official end to the demo part of it. Everything after that was an ARG/ hidden collectible game to reveal that it is actually a silent hill game. For those who aren't familiar with ARGs they are usually very difficult, and this seemed like a very light version of that. I'm surprised Patrick kept on with it even after realizing how obtuse it was getting. He wouldn't have even really know there was more the demo it if it weren't for him already knowing there was a "true ending" and the chats help.

Kojima has done this stuff before. It's not really supposed to be fun at that point just something for die hard fans to dig into if they want to experience everything the world has to offer and uncover all of the secrets. when you look at it like that it's an amazing prologue to a Silent Hill game which is all about that kind of stuff.

This game seemed genuinely creepy until that pixel hunt portion, and then the ending seemed to just fizzle out. Hopefully the real game isn't so obtuse.

@liquidprince: The end puzzle is intentionally obtuse to hide the big reveal. That's why Kojima was surprised it was revealed by the end of the day, he expected it to take at least a week. Functionally, the teaser is over once it glitches out.

a picture from he looked at earlier in the game, where the first clock is, there was a picture on the wall with the like top 3/4 removed, later after the part where the game paused and a little picture(?) piece like ...was on part of the brain, i THINK it appeared on that picture frame in the hall...I could be mistaken, im about 48 minutes in, ill find out if he looks.

edit: he looked at the picture but didnt acknowledge that it changed at about 50:30

double edit: nevermind, he saw it.

I just had to stop watching about 20 minutes in because I'm a big baby. I'll probably go back to it once I calm down.

Normally I HATE jump-scares but this seems to really do jump-scares right. The repetition makes it so they can scare the shit out of you by messing with your expectations.

Horror games don't do much for me usually but I thought this was great, some smart use of horror.

I did get a little lost along the way as I tried to figure things out. Certainly was effective at peaking my interest. But it's awesome seeing Patrick plays these games because he appreciates what they're all about without taking the pee out of em.

In true Kojima fashion, one of the 3 things you need to do in order to complete the teaser and get the final cutscene is having a microphone plugged in and speaking into it at a fixed point.

Great teaser. Thats it, i think people are taking this way too much to heart though. I dont think it is really at all representative of what the game will be like, besides atmospherically. Its just a fucking ingenious way to tease a game.

For Kojima/Del Toro/Reedus/Silent Hill fans its a great moment when you get to the end if you dont have it spoiled. I cant imagine being the first person to get through the demo and see that. Must have been crazy.

Its great to see Kojima working on things that arent Metal Gear, must be refreshing for him too, especially to be working with someone like Del Toro, although i wonder what his involvement in the development actually is.

Yeah, as a way of saying "this is the atmosphere we're going for" it was perfect. I haven't played a lot of Silent Hill, but you could definitely see the influences. This is what Silent Hill: The Room should have been.

Played through as much as I could figure out before watching this...and without plugging in my mic and talking to myself like a madman, as that was apparently the next step for me.

I dig it for the sort of puzzley stuff (at least what you could actually solve on your own) and the amazing look and sound. It has a great atmosphere to it...

But man I really dislike cheap jump scares. Popping random shit out is just a lazy way to freak someone out. This teaser at least tries to earn them by sort of obviously building towards them, but still.

The last Silent Hill game I was into was 3. It wasn't completely devoid of jump scares but it didn't lean on them as much as this teaser does. It opted instead for setting the mood through the sound, the setting, the music, the monster designs, the story... It used everything it could to get into my head and under my skin. And it was super effective at the time.

I realize this isn't representative of the gameplay of Silent Hills. Personally I hope they go more the psychological/paranormal thriller route and less the cheap scare/horror flick route.

On a side note, this playable teaser is an awesome way to drum up interest in the game. Kind of a stroke of genius from a marketing perspective.

PS

I am disappoint, chat. How the hell was it not obvious that the clock only "goes blank" (showing 0:00) at the sound of the chimes? It's a 24 hour clock. There are 12 chimes. Not that any of that would've helped anyway, given how obtuse the last parts of the puzzle are after that.

I don't usually get that affected by horror in generally in whatever format, but I couldn't even finish this! I had to watch a play through on YouTube! And after the big scare (which made me scream louder than I thought possible) I just couldn't put that face out of my mind; it's been bugging me for 2 days now!

I'm a big fan of silent hill but after playing this I'm a bit concerned I'm not gonna want to buy it because it's too damn scary!

Those puzzles are fucking horrible. Horror games need to be easy to progress through because if you keep hitting walls you totally lose momentum and it stops being scary, just like Patrick said. This was a cool idea but if it's representative of what the game will be like, it does not bode well for the game. If they pull off the atmosphere and manage to make the gameplay not total shit, it could be a pretty special game.
