Quick Look: Spec Ops: The Line

Sweet Dang missed it, but I am actually interested in this game I hope the story holds up.

Missed it live, watching it now. Been waiting long enough for this game to come out.

I know it used to take far longer. I guess whatever tech CBS has allows for faster turnarounds.

Why does the game look as if it animates like a PSP game (Syphon Filter)? Mostly when aiming and in cover. And from the facials.

Apart from the bad faces, I thought the demo looked rather good. Could've just been the fact that it was on my PC and all that.

From what I have read of this game there is at least some element of Heart of Darkness (Apocalypse Now) - anyone that has played it confirm story beats from the book (or movie?)?

I noticed there is a character they are looking for called "Konrad"? Maybe a Mr. Kurtz (Col. Kurtz) stand in? (Joseph Conrad wrote the novel)

Anyone else see this or am I grasping at straws?

So they ruined the Spec Ops series now.

Yeah, it was stated that Heart of Darkness was an influence and "Konrad" is pretty much the "Kurtz" stand in.

Hmmm...interesting QL. I realize they didn't wanna show too much and give the important story beats away but I didn't come away from this QL leaning either way on the topic of buying the game.

Gonna keep hitting up some reviews and gameplay footage to see if that sways me one way or the other.

Yup they totally said that in interviews a while back.

I think this would have benefited if it just cut the multiplayer out completely and was released as a downloadable game instead.

Don't know why they don't just start doing the majority of these quicklooks on pc.

Game looks like a lot of fun, both single and multiplayer wise, will probably pick it up this weekend. Didn't think the multiplayer looked too bad either. I don't know why the fuck they were going on about Call Of Duty either, sure it uses ranks etc but it looks more like Socom gameplay wise than anything else. Apparently the game has a no respawn mode which only adds to that. It looked perfectly competent compared to any other shooter out there and I enjoyed the demo a lot. Doesn't mean it'll last of course but I saw no reason to be overly pessimstic. It looked pretty nice as well, loved the colours, and as it's an Unreal engine game it'll look very nice on PC too.

Crappy quick look, game looked decent. Going to try the demo, and if it holds up go pick up a copy.

Good game, I already put about 3 hours into it. A bit on the Linear side ... but what 3rd person shooter isn't?

This game is very similar to "Inversion", beside the Aliens and crazy gravity.

Is there perma deth for your squad mates or do you just go into a fail state by not healing them?

I can't even force myself to be interested in this game. I have absolutely zero interest, and I don't know why.

It's probably the whole modern-military shooter crap.

I was interested in what Jeff was thinking about this game and will be interested when he's finished. They had the lead designer guy in Weekend Confirmed, and he said they got a completely separate team to to design and develop the multiplayer portion and wouldn't draw resources from single player. I thinks there is an military shooter multiplayer base similar to the MMO multiplayer base that goes around playing these games, who like that same hook with a little variation. (I however seem to be like Patrick who only need one or two games with a particular 'hook' so makes little sense to my enjoyment.)

Also surprised about the texture streaming issue as he said that was better than it used to be for Unreal Engine (maybe its just bad for multiplayer?)

Also, the "Shoot that Guy" tactical order should named "The Whitta Mechanic".

The single player seems solid to me.

I like the color palette. Looks really nice compared to the usual browns...

So these must not be real people. Or, they're sub-humans who don't deserve any respect what-so-ever since they obviously don't share Tricky's taste in games. Game looks so much better on PC, and handles really nicely with a mouse. Enjoyed it a lot more than playing with a controller, made the combat better.

when I played the PC demo, a squadmate dying was an automatic "retry from last checkpoint" thing

Pretty much the same as me. I'd going to be being attentive to a range of reviews - could get some high marks from a few and middling ones from others maybe?

I do wish the combat would have been more freeform though, with extensive use of the sand in a dynamic way rather than every use of it being carefully planned out by the designers which is what seems to be going on. Also the environments seem fairly small - not too bad, but the first trailers seemed to promise to really use the scale of Dubai.

I think this game would work better if it was a Dune side-story. Just sayin' (mostly because I just read it, but still!).

I played both the multiplayer beta and the campaign demo and from what I remember of the beta (it was a while ago) the two parts feel like two completely different games. For me, the campaign demo seems a little bit clumsy gameplay wise (nothing major, though) but otherwise enjoyable. The beta didn't really work for me at all. So I dunno. Not sure if I want to pull the trigger on buying.

Yeah some of the GB QLs here I come away from knowing that I want the game without having to look anywhere else. I`ve been looking forward to the Line for a while now but I just don`t know what to think.

It's nice to hear that the story gets better than what the demo showed, but everything else seems just as mediocre as what I experienced in that. Well, besides the multiplayer. That just looks like hot garbage.
 
I guess I'll wait to hear if the narrative pays off before deciding if I want to get this.

The point I got from patrick saying that was that the multiplayer is kind of an after thought, and a tad mediocre, for a game seemingly built on its story, and yet the multiplayer actually has players. From a philosophical stand point, why is that?

This isn't, considerably, a major release game and it had a lot of trouble in development so that is a bit surprising. I don't know how long that will last but there is an audience for this game and that is kind of surprising. That's not good or bad- just surprising.

I kind of expected this game to fly under the radar for most and to kind of disappear with little to no fan fare. But I don't know, we'll see- it's already seemingly got more players playing it then I expected.

I'm really interested in playing the single player myself. I've been waiting for it since Greg was a PR guy or whatever it was back in early 2010.

I'm down to rent (but definitely not buy) a generic 3PS with an interesting story. Sure, wth.
