Hey Jan, the overlays are completely unnecessary man. If you watch for a minute you can easily figure out who is who. If you absolutely have to have them, just use P1 and P2 on Jeff and Ben’s frame (and make it way smaller) instead of L and R. The stuff over the game itself is worthless though.

Agreed. I'd rather have the pure feed.

Nah.

There's an arcade near me (Galloping Ghost in Brookfield, IL) that has one of the prototype arcade machines for Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. The a.i. was never finished so the computer will only jab every few seconds. Somehow I think I had more fun with that than I would have with the finished game.

Hooray for more science. I had some unrealistically high expectations for Fighters Destiny. Anytime I saw footage of that game it looked like the N64's one very solid fighter. Glad to see Jeff and Ben discover new strategies of earning points, but it looks like this game hasn't aged all that great. Would love a modern fighter try to replicate FD's point system though. Someone already posted a gif, but they missed out on the fighting cow, which is a crying shame.

Man that Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. segment was something special. Just spam either projectiles or dashes and you're ok!

I remember Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. only in the context of seeing the box a lot in the N64 section when I rented games, so this video was a bit of a revelation for my younger self. It, uh, looks really bad.

On the other hand, I think I'd actually kind of want to see what "high level play" for something that terrible would actually look like. Like, there's clearly some intention and deliberation around Fighters Destiny's mechanics, but Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. seems like something made by people who had zero idea what they were doing.

Hmm. Bio Freaks doesn't seem that aggressively bad to me. Like I guess it's not very balanced, but it still seems kind of fun. I never played it, but from what I saw, I'd much sooner play it than Masters of Teras Kasi, which I did play (unfortunately). Period reviews back that up. MoTK is a 4.4/10 on Gamespot, Bio Freaks a 6/10.

Hey @unastrike, have you science folks made any progress on getting One Must Fall 2097 working? I recall Jeff mentioning it was giving you trouble a good while back.

@nonesun: If they are there, they are in the way. They are not needed at all, and during the Fighter's Destiny part of the video, the character models would routinely go under them. They added nothing to the video.

Was RHCP influenced by the character select music of this game? It almost sounds like they used it for Love Rollercoaster.

Yeah, I think both of these games should be higher on the list than they placed. Fighter's Destiny is a very good game which deserves better than being on the lower part of the list; it's a very original and well-executed game which was pretty good at the time and holds up no worse than most 3d fighting games from that generation. It's a unique and high-quality game, and I agree that the two Fighter's Destiny games are the best 3d fighters on the N64. I hope if they ever cover the second one it places higher. Other than the final ranking it was a pretty good segment, though.

As for Bio Freaks, it's definitely not a good game and it's obviously very broken, but it IS original in ways most fighting games aren't, and at least it's amusing and sometimes even fun to play; you can't say that about some other, far worse 3d fighters of the time, such as War Gods or Criticom. Sure, it's not a good game and it should be low on this list, but I don't know about second from the bottom.

Still, good episode. It's always nice to see the N64 covered even though they rarely like its games as much as I do.

I was wondering when they'd do Fighters Destiny. One of my friends at school had rich parents so they had a big house and we'd go there to play video games for hours and hours, and one time one of those games was Fighters Destiny. As far as I can remember I hated it - I wasn't even especially interested in fighting games, particularly 3D ones, and in my inexpert opinion it looked and felt muddy and gross and uninteresting.

Anyway, he gave me that same copy for my next birthday, so one of the few fighting games I've ever owned is also my least favourite out of all I've played.

To be fair, I don't remember if I even got him anything for his birthday, so, you know, no hard feelings or anything.

Ahh come on.. BIO F.R.E.A.K.S. is not THAT bad. Jeff played it on his home stream a little bit ago and had some fun. It had quite a few unique ideas.

In the name of science, I have to ask: Does the use of the N64 controller in multi-platform games work against those games? Would Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. have received a higher score (yeah, that's a bit of a stretch) if it was played on the PS1 instead?

Fighters Destiny was awesome. Really sad they glossed over the nuts and bols of this game. The points system was really interesting and strategic. For example, if you had 3 points left, should you lose the game, you can bait you oponent to do a throw-in which is only 2 points, instead of getting knocked out for 3 points. and thats when the comeback starts.

There is also, multiple system where you can win; you can cheese, and just go for throw ins, and ring out for 1 and 2 points, or you can go all skill on your opponent and do Specials for 5 points, but those are hard to execute and easy to dodge. So there is Risk Vs Reward attrition going on, and the person who can get into his/her opponents head was usually the winner, not necessarily the most skillful (although it helps).

I could write essay about why this game was awesome, and its sad people will gloss over its depth because it does play sluggish compared to Street Fighter and the likes.

What I remember most about BIO F.R.E.A.K.S was that it was always in the used PSone bargain bin at Funcoland/Game Stop. I would look at the cover but was not motivated to buy or rent it.

Fun fact, Jeff reviewed Fighters Destiny on the N64 back when it go released.

The game sold only 160.000 units, which makes it a gem of some sort
