SOCOM Is Pretty Floored If You Ask Me

#1 Edited by get2sammyb (6412 posts) -

Correct me if I'm wrong but here are my thoughts on the SOCOM beta taken from my blog:

I got into the SOCOM: Confrontation BETA today and I keep reminding myself that I have to take the game exactly for what it is, a beta. It’s kinda hard though when the game in question is such a shambles that this particular blogger found it nigh-on impossible to even get in a game. We’re talking 2 hours hopping screens and menus gave a return of one match. With the release date looming in October I have a list of negatives to talk about to those lucky enough to not be involved in the beta. Hopefully this post will draw some attention to the developers of the game to make them realise that I’m not getting a very functional game to test at the moment.

The first thing worth noting is the dramatic slow down in the menus. For some reason when I’m navigating menus I find my controller unresponsive and the menus juddering all over the place. My first port of call was to change the appearance of my character but given the shoddy loading and downright dogged menu system I quickly got frustrated and decided to hop into the game.

Of which the experience is just as unsatisfying. You choose your main lobby (for me the UK) and then from here you can hop right into a number of pre-made game rooms and also user-made game rooms. It was within these I spent a good hour and a half or so hopping around trying to actually play the game. Joining a room has you waiting until the next battle until you can play but sadly I sat in one particular room for a good 35 minutes (one match is 8 minutes in the Beta by default) where I was prompted twice that I was “entering” the game but instead sat with a background image of soldiers and a spinning circle.

Eventually I managed to join a one on one in a French speaking room which is where I got to play a little of the game. Graphically it’s pretty nice but there was a helluva lot of noticable texture loading which you physically watch load to it’s proper resolution as you traverse the environment. I can cope with that but it’s not the most subtle of problems and started to irritate me as I watched the resolutions change when I run past certain walls. There’s also a problem with pop-in I noticed when I turned corners quickly objects suddenly popped into view. Aside from that the graphics looked really good for a PSN game so I’m sure upon release date those problems can be ironed out.

What I’m more worried about is the “cover system” which allows your character to stand by walls and use the tilt of the six-axis to look around corners. The six-axis was on the whole unresponsive to tilt and the cover system just seemed to activate when I was just walking around. No where near to walls. Now - it may be that it’s button activated and I didn’t notice but I got more of an impression that the game was just deciding when to use the mechanic for me. It was hindering and cost me a couple of lives.

The controls were another notable cause for concern with reload being mapped to the right stick as default (why?) and R2 being used for run. What irritated me most about running was the fact that you don’t move your characters direction with the left-stick - more he runs straight forward and then controlling the camera allows him to turn corners. It’s just something that made me feel less attached to the character. Why not turn the characters body and not have the camera change his direction.

Overly I found the game slow and somewhat tedious, particularly if these are the lengths you have to go to to find a game. Maybe I was annoyed with the lack of immediacy - I’m new to beta’s and am probably irritated by the teething trouble but then I expected behind the shabby slow menus and even the apparent issues of booting up a match to be evened out when in game but it all feels so mundane. Slow, clunky and frustrating are my initial impressions on SOCOM: Confrontation.

I’ll persevere for the sake of beta testing and I hope Slant Six Games totally take my ideas on board in the long run. I just can’t see how this game is going to be ready for October though guys.

EDIT: That's an embarassing spelling mistake in the title. I'm ashamed. Can't edit it though :(

I got the beta today...disappointed, but not of the game yet..have yet to even get in it. After like 15 tries at the main start up screen of "failing to connect" to the network, I finally got in,created a character(with crazy slow lag from selection to selection I might add, hopefully that improves...) then I go to a server, to have a loading screen probably 5 minutes long..to only get in and immediately say "your team won" and send me back to the menu's. So I gave it one more chance, to then have an infinite loading screen that never got me in game after like 10 minutes..so I shut it off, hoping for better results tomorrow. It really seems like this beta (even though its been in private for a while now) is really flawed, some don't seem to be having problems I guess, but damn..if its that much of a chore just to get into it, what a waste of time. Have yet to even move my damn character around in game, I hope this gets fixed.

I guess I ain't the only one baffled by the loading of everything, literally EVERYTHING.

#6 Posted by TwoOneFive (9459 posts) -

so how exactly do you "phyically watch load" something?

What typo?

Eh, I've never been a fan of SOCOM and I stay away from them. Games can really change between beta and launch, but you're describing design AND technical flaws that add up and I doubt will change come launch.

When in doubt, play Bad Company.

This is why i dont play beta's

I prefer to play games when they are finished.

isn't this socom not even the real thing? are they not working on the real next socom game... if that makes sense.

Today's (Sept 18th) patch improved the beta of this game greatly.  If you guys haven't gotten a change to get on lately, give the patch a go and see what you think.  Most of the lag is gone, the loads into the game have been significantly improved, and overall the game feels far less broken than it did a week ago.

i get this insane glitch now, people cant see me so i like cant die its crazy, and it said i was some else. Wierd.

Interesting, I'm going to give that a shot right now.

I'm hoping the menus will be snappier in the final version, and getting into games feel less incredibly archaic. The lack of matchmaking and party systems in most games, at least from larger developers and publishers, is kind of baffling. Halo 2 was four years ago.

The actual game, from what I've played, is pretty good. Looks really nice, and just feels solid all around.

i must repeat what someone said above, this is why i tend not to join betas unless its a game i REALLYYY want to try.

i say this as i am downloading the 473 mb patch to SOCOM right now..so hopefully, between the insanely long(for a ps3 game) installer and the patch, renting this game wasnt a complete waste.

the loading times still suck ass its abysmal. every screen loads slow, the menus are way to tedious to, like if you get  a game invite you read the message, accept the invite, exist the message, back out of community, go to briefings, go to custom game, the go to join game, and then wait 10 minutes for the game to load.

the gameplay, and also the graphics kick ass imo. i really like it, tons of fun, and dare i say, the graphics are on par or better than cod4 imo (more varied, more detail, bigger maps etc)
but these load times are ridiculous.

did they address ANYTHING in that beta? i wasnt in the beta so i wouldnt know but this is aweful.  they keep saying, o all this will change after a week socom was always this way. BULLSHIT the menus and loading times were never this bad.

the only thing i see them being able to fix the constant lock ups (INCREDIBLY FUSTRATING), lag, slow loading the maps maybe, and some other stuff. this shit is pathetic man

the customizing is whack too, it will say gear, head features, hmm wheres the hats you go back

then armory, then head gear, then the hats. its all way to tedius and horribly designed and all the screens load slow as shit.

who the hell though the beta went well enough to allow this stuff to ship the way it has

no freezes and no slow as menu loading? i doubt that.
and have you tried playing with friends, the way you send invites and accept them and then join their games is completely stupid. you get thier message so you go to community and the messages, open their message, click accept invite, go back to community, leave that and go to briefings, then click the only clickable thing on this screen "custom games' (what the hell is the point of two different screens plus loading time if you only have one choice to click??!!?!?!!?!) then go to select channel and the click join game! HUH?!?!?! WHY?!!? thats completely too much work. slant six must be stupid man

I'm kinda annoyed by the performance of this beta.  I hope the full game gets fixed.  Honestly 100% this game will decide if I buy a PS3 after X-mas.  Its the sort of game I love and It'll hold me over until the next Call of Duty game

#25 Posted by TwoOneFive (9459 posts) -

lol not a beta anymore bulk92

10 bucks says that, completely broken as it is, it still ends up with a higher metacritic than Too Human.
