Dr. Nicholai Stephanovich Sokolov is the rocket scientist who is captured by Colonel Volgin and blackmailed into developing and completing the Shagohod which appears in Metal Gear Solid 3.Later it appears he seemingly died off-screen after he is tortured for trying to escape.He also appears in Portable Ops as an informant named Ghost. He then goes on to explain how he survived Volgin's torture and escaped to the U.S. with the help of the new FOX unit commander Gene.
