I found this video of people at pax east waiting to play SW:TOR. It seems its either play with fourteen year old douches in WoW or play with role players in Sw:tor. I don't know which is worse. Hopefully, these guys all play on rp, or pve servers....  Also that Star Wars Geek dash at the star was priceless, everyone was out of breath 3 seconds in run.

Its not like you'd be forced to interact with them, MMOs are full of this kind of thing. It is literally part of the MMO culture, and its easy enough to avoid.

Is it really that much of a barrier to enjoyment? These people are just doing what makes them happy and will probably make up a reasonably small portion of the community anyway. You wouldn't be forced to interact with them.

And even if you did interact with them, you probably wouldn't even know.

OP have you ever played an MMO? This isn't a new thing and it's certainly not the only thing that makes up the community of any MMO. It exists but it's a small minority.

I like how every single person in this thread overreacted, as if everything i said was indicative of anything other then poking fun.

MMOs are full of strangeness in the people playing it, which is why I tend to avoid the major towns & ignore/hide the chat.

14 year old douchebags I can see wanting to avoid but I can't fault someone for wanting to roleplay in a roleplaying game.

Never really been my thing for various reasons but I respect people that some people will wanna roll that way.

It's not MMO's - geek culture and most of gaming is full of that. It isn't bad though, it's not like you're forced into it if you don't like it. You can always choose who to play with in MMO's.

It wasn't as bad as I expected. Just some people saying that waiting hours in line was worth it to play TOR. Pretty standard stuff. Spending a honeymoon at PAX seems lame, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

What I'm really disappointed in is all the people who cannot socialize outside the context of a WoW raid. I've seen people like that in real life and it's a sad sight. They try to stutter out some small talk, but the conversation always goes back to their virtual life. The worst part is that uninformed people assume that all people who play games behave that way. It's an unfortunate stereotype that makes me avoid openly talking about my gaming hobby to non-gamers.

You never find weird/creepy people in any other game genre.

Do people really believe that? You might as well never play any other game online again.

MMOs are more subject to weirdos being vocal though because of keyboard chat and public channels. Although that said Crossroads chat was always fun. (well...)

@Ygg: I think the issue is that an MMORPG appeals to people who are bad at socializing in real life yet need an outlet for socialization, and the RPG aspect allows them to escape the cruel reality that they have created for themselves.

Naturally, there are plenty of normal MMO players, and I'm sure there are weird... racing game players. It just seems that MMO's attract that kind of person more easily.

More surprised at these peoples reactions to the game, even if they are genuine. MMO's are not something that can blow your mind in 15 min.

Yeah. 'Those' attract the kind who like to elevate themselves on their perceived lessers. It's a vicious cycle really.
