I'm just happy I got to keep my steampunk ship. Everything inside of it is gone, but the ship remains.

Giant Bomb Starbound server (defunct)

You can no longer attack through blocks
Noooooooooooooooooooooo
WORST GAME OF THE YEAR!
I figured that would happen relatively quickly, oh well. Time to find more ways to cheese bosses.
Now to check if my world remains.
So which server are we using? Or are karsh and sithtoast going to fight to the death?
Also, does anyone else have some... powerful weapons as of this patch? Let's just say I killed the dragon in one hit with a one-handed dagger. Looks like they messed up and only changed the randomly generated weapons' base attack damage. If you build yourself some 2nd tier weapons (at least on my Apex character with the Apex weapons) you can one-shot the whole game. Kind of a big exploit.
Heads up guys, there looks to be another server wipe coming when the devs fix how insanely overpowered crafted weapons have become.
There WILL probably have to be another character wipe for the weapons damage fix. Massive apologies!

@samstrife: Drat, well there goes like 3 more hours of work. Eh, screw it, I'll just keep playing for now.
Fuuck. I've been playing since the update, finally got great armor, great weapons, a diamond drill, and finally found myself an harmonica. I really hope they can manage it without the wipe. I should have known to be wary after I saw the 16000 dps weapons.
@development: To be honest i think i am using Karsh server seems more stable.
I better go and destroy the world with my lightning-fast 11500 dps daggers while I have the chance, then.
An important note: Weapon damage might be fixed now, but it seems that shields (and possibly also armor) actually don't have any effect since the wipe.
So if it seems like you're taking way too much damage from stuff, rest easy, because you totally are.
e: Correction, armor just doesn't do much at low levels on low level planets. Basically, reduction does less the less damage you're taking, so that lower-level enemies will still stay a little threatening even as you move up in armor. Shields are still busted either way, though.
Hey y'all, starbound.redco.in is patched now.
Also sorry for disconnecting everyone, I wanted to forewarn you but my client patched and there's no way to communicate from the server software, so.. I waited until people sounded like they weren't busy and killed it. Again, sorry! Blame the beta.
edit: also to the guy that has tried to connect using different passwords 8 times now, there are no passwords/accounts.
Im so tempted to jump into this game....is it looking like a winner? Will it keep me interested over the long term? How are the Giant Bomb servers going?
Games great, though I'd probably suggest if you plan on investing alot of time in it wait till maybe its later on in development. That way you're not losing anything significant.
@sithtoast: it looks like most people have settled on @karsh's for now, unfortunately. I'm sure you've noticed that, but... well no one has said anything to you directly, so I figured I would. Come join us on Karsh's server if you can; everything is still pretty undeveloped.

I think you might wanna wait if you're looking for real long-term gameplay. There's a ton of stuff, but most of the bosses are missing, and "leveling" is super easy and unbalanced right now. On the other hand, if you join now there's still bound to be another character/world reset in future updates, so you'll have plenty to do.
@sithtoast: No problem man thanks for hosting a server.
@sithtoast: Thanks again for getting that server running when everything was first starting. Much appreciated, man. Lookin forward to seeing you online!
Just wanted to update you guys on the server:
I'm still running it off of my desktop. Ideally, I would be hosting it on my VPS (the same one that's currently running the mostly-dead Trackmania 2 Stadium server). However, said VPS only has 1GB of memory and somewhat-limited CPU.
Let's look at the numbers:
This has been running since the most recent patch, meaning it's been up for less than 24 hours. It's up to almost 3GB memory usage, and is using almost 20% of my CPU (an overclocked i7-2700k).
This server software is downright nasty! Granted, it's a really early beta, I expected as much. But unfortunately it means I can't reliably host it off of my existing VPS, and I will continue to host it off of my desktop. Paying for a better VPS isn't a great solution either, as the software will still require frequent restarts to fix its gnarly leaks before anything explodes.
Just some food for thought, for anybody considering hosting a Starbound beta server. As always, hit me up on Twitter @redcoin if anything messes up.
edit: A patch was announced for a tonight. Like last time, I probably won't have any way of communicating with you guys on the server. Expect a brief restart around 9PM CST, if it patches around the same time as yesterday.
New patch uploading:
- Nerf the hell out of birds, they no longer attack you at long range, lower damage, don't follow you forever.
- Monster projectiles across the board better balanced
- Shields better balanced
- Early armors better balanced
- Melee weapons better balanced
- Ores better balanced
- AI improvements
- you can now craft lanterns (similar to sixxes' lantern mod!)
- you can now craft a new back armor to help light caves
- fixed the bubble gun crashing on mouse over
- improve grass ( Suggestion by Dracyoshi)
- You are now invincible on your ship (this requires a new character)
- You need to be hit a lot harder to get knocked back
- some UI updates
- Drills now destroy 3x3 blocks
- Other misc changes
No wipe needed but for balance purposes new characters have been suggested for progression testing.
edit:
New Patch is Live on steam, go ahead and update ya heathens!
edit2:
Karsh has put the server back up with the latest patch for those of you itching to play!
@sexytoad: Don't worry. All I do most of the time is just stand around in the base and spam mortal kombat and the guile theme on my vinyl guitar. Also everyone is very much willing to help you out kill bosses or help you progress in your Starbound character.
Also I'll hopefully be back on the server soon. Finals are killing me right now.
New updates are ostensibly cool, but birds are still overpowered, haha. They have too much health, and breath attacks for all enemies are still way overpowered. Ran into a frog thing and it flame-breathed me for all my health, while normal attacks were taking off just a couple bars.
I just got the game tonight and I'm really loving it. I'm gonna finish the main tutorial quest before venturing into multiplayer, but it's good to know the community already has a server ready!
@karsh: @boom_stick: It seems to be down?
Just woke up--not sure what happened. I was informed it was spitting version mismatch errors, but it was also spamming a ton of other errors. I can't tell if a new hotfix rolled out. Regardless, it was using 3.5GB of memory and generally was up to no good.
Reupdated the server and restarted it. Should be up now.
Man this version's unstable. :(
I haven't really made any progress since the last character reset so I think I'll start a new character (obviously Floran) and jump onto one of these servers. Sure beats playing alone, if there's a chance somebody will visit my home planet I've actually got some incentive to make it look good.
List up for steam IDs if you're inclined to share: http://www.giantbomb.com/starbound/3030-37839/forums/starbound-player-list-1463794/

Is anyone playing Starbound on a Mac? I've been looking for some new games to play on my Macbook. I would like to run it in OS 10.9 but I also have Parallels and VMware instances of Win 7 and 8 if needed. I do have a dedicated gaming PC but it's seeing little use these days because I'm hardly ever at home anymore.
That being said - does anyone have any experience using a trackpad or touchpad instead of a mouse with Starbound? I imagine it's probably a pain in the ass.
Thanks guys
