    Stealth

    Concept »

Using stealth often requires the player to accomplish their objective without being detected by enemies. Methods of detection can vary from game to game, and can be based on an enemy's line of sight, how quiet the player is, or even how the player interacts with the environment.

    Shhh!
    Shhh!
I have discovered that, apparently, I'm not very good at stealth games. I played about 3 hours of Metal Gear Solid 4 (not knowing how long the game is I can't really pass judgement on what I have seen. For all I know i'm just getting started.) and about 5 hours of Splinter Cell Conviction. Both encourage stealth, though each is forgiving enough to humour my thunderous attempts at it. Perhaps I am being too purist when I approach these games - being spottedat all is to be considered failure. What frustrated me were the segments of each game where, having established a stealth ethos, the slippers were abruptly removed and I was thrust forward into the spotlight.
Usually when I am spotted my first instincts are:

    1. PANIC!!
    2. Hide until everyone goes away.

Unfortunately this usually means crouching in a dark corner for 2 minutes listening to hammy goon dialogue, then repeating the entire exercise again as soon as patrols have been resumed. The worst thing is knowing that, on the normal setting of Conviction on which I play, I could potentially just run around with a shotgun and blast my way through the cardboard enemies. Having tried this I can report that the game is much more enjoyable, though I feel slightly guilty in doing so. Shotguns in a Splinter Cell game are an awkwardness, a jarring juxtaposition on par with Marcus Fenix writing Poetry. It just feels... wrong.

the next Gears Of War novel is due to ship on the 25th. Anvil Gate is the third book in the series and will chart the events leading up to the third game. I don't give a fuck if you are interested, I am fucking stoked. Pre-order time :D

    What else happened today?

Oh yeah, Left 4 Dead news at GamesCon. The next free Left 4 Dead DLC is titled The Sacrifice and patches in the original survivors account of The Passing for both the original and second Left 4 Dead games. Apparently we get to decide the fate of one of the original survivors deaths - which is kinda weird considering it was very definitely Bill that died at the end of The Passing. I don't know if I want to have to make that choice. That's going to be fucking hard. Could you send Louis to his death?

    COULD YOU?

    PILLS HERE!
    PILLS HERE!

    Ok... maybe you could.

Anyways, as an extra treat the DLC also contains a L4D2 version of the No Mercy hospital campaign. That L4D2 is really starting to flesh out into a decent sized game. Anyone with qualms over it's value can now be silenced. But not with a silencer because, as previously mentioned, I suck at stealth games.

    Yo that's cold.

He wasn't my favourite character in that game, but i didn't hate him. Zoey was the best, everyone knows this.

Fucking can't wait for anvil gate!

And and actually the opposite, I love stealth games.  Those two are pretty great and I like sneaking past people and using gadgets and stuff like that, its just my kind of game.

I'm also currently playing through Splinter Cell: Conviction. So far I've found it to be really good, but fumbling over the game's interface has lead to being spotted more times than I wanted. For the most part, I really like the game, though I've had a few issues. For instance... it seems there's no way to reload... The game shows me that if I push in the left stick, that's how to reload. Except it never once has worked for me. So occasionally I'll enter a gun-fight and only have 1 shot left before needing to reload, and then I could be getting shot at while trying to reload my weapon. Kind of lame. What is going on there?

Anyway, yeah. Being stealthy is cool and all, but a little too slow. I almost feel like a slow Batman in Conviction, with a gun. Especially when I keep throwing guys through windows. The stealth in the game seems to be used best in short bursts. I try to be stealthy all the time, but considering how easy it is to go back into hiding even after being spotted, I feel like I'm rushing at times. Oh well, I'm having a good time with it.

I swear they original announcement of the DLC stated it would come out a month after LFD 2's. Perhaps I'm making that up.

I didn't know that one of the Old Navy mannequins was a playable character in the original Left 4 Dead. Keep in mind that I've played that game.

Man Sweep if I didn't actually know you better, the fact that you care about Gears of War books would make me totally disregard everything you say. But I do, and I know it's just a small character flaw, no biggie. Also I read all the WoW books, which I'm sure is only marginally less terrible. Though some of them are quite good! Anything with Christie Golden's name on the cover, anyway.

I cannot finish Metal Gear Solid 4 because of a level that requires complete stealth.  Thanks to my suck-ass vision, I can't pick out the guy I'm supposed to follow, and when I miraculously do, he inevitably gets blown away or discovered by goons I can't see.  Fuuuuuuck.

Splinter Cell Conviction wasn't a stealth game.  It pretended to be, but it definitely wasn't a stealth game.  Don't feel bad just blasting your way through that shit.  Metal Gear Solid 4 had some good stealth bits, but overall, the convoluted nature of storytelling in that franchise still turns me off...as well as the clunky-ass controls amongst other things.  That microwave sequence was such bullshit that I just put the controller down and said "fuck it".

I'm super fucking excited about some more L4D/L4D2 DLC!  I still haven't played The Passing.  Actually, I think I might need to pick that up with the 800 points I've got sitting around on my account.  I was debating between that and Warden's Keep since it's on sale, but I think your blog has sold me on getting The Passing!  Thank you, Sweep.

I haven't played a good stealth game since Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Die and learn gaming, unless you succeed the first time.
