The world's first assault rifle, it's a staple for mid-range killing on the German side in WWII-themed games.

The MP44, or StG. 44 is commonly regarded as the first 'true' assault rifle.

History

The MP43, as it was originally called, was a German rifle first manufactured as a prototype in 1943. Nazi Generals were looking for a new rifle, and the MP43 seemed to fulfill their requirements. The only problem was that the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, would not have allowed the rifle to be used. He wanted to focus the weapon builders on long range weapons and sub machine guns that could overwhelm the enemy.

As 1944 dawned, the Nazi Generals agreed to lie that the MP44, as it was now called, was an SMG. However, when Hitler came to see the new rifle, he asked what the Afrika Korps needed. One of the Generals exclaimed 'More of these new rifles!'. This gave the whole plan away. Hitler, they assumed, would not allow the weapon's production to continue. However, Hitler decided to take the weapon and test fire it. Surprisingly, he said that it was indeed a great gun. In fact, he liked the MP44 so much, he gave it the green light for mass production - and he renamed it. After renaming the gun to the Sturmgewehr 43, he asked if it could be improved more.

The makers of the MP44 did so, and they upgraded the weapon more. The Sturmgewehr was mass produced, and the first of them were given to the Waffen SS. Hitler's personal bodyguards. Afterward, a few more of the rifles were given to the Afrika Korps. Hitler's aim was to get an StG into the hands of EVERY German soldier, but the gun came too late into the war to be of any use.

Facts

The first prototypes of the MP43 were actually manufactured in 1942.

The StG. 44 was in service for less than a year. It lasted from July 1944 until May 1945.

The StG. 44 fired 7.92 Kurz rounds, same as the Kar98k.

The StG. is 37 inches (940MM) long.

The StG. has a Rate of Fire of 500 - 600 RPM.

The STG. 44 still sees a small amount of service in the Middle East, despite the fact only one country makes the ammunition for the weapon.

Had the war continued, the STG would have been taken out of service in 1945. It was to be replaced with the STG .45, as it was too expensive to produce.

There was an attachment for the StG. called the Kummerlauf. This attachment was a curved barrel. German troops could use it to fire around corners. MP43/1 was a name given to the prototype sniper versions.

The MP44 / STG. 44 has appeared in every Call of Duty game.

The STG design was what influenced the AK47 design.

Game Versions

This area will cover the STG in games.

Call of Duty: World at War

The STG in World at War is unlocked at Rank 37. It looks pretty like a real STG. It is quite a balanced weapon, as the fire rate is balanced with the power. Players can attach an Aperture Sight, a Suppressor, or a Telescopic Sight (like the Kummerlauf) to the weapon.  The iron sights are a reasonably small square. They're a smaller version of the Gewehr 43's in-game.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

The STG. 44 in Modern Warfare, or MP44 as it is called in game, is unlocked at Rank 52. The weapon is similar statistically to the AK47 in-game. The MP44 has a rounded iron sight in Call of Duty 4. Part of the iron sight is obscured though, which makes this weapon hard to adjust to when you first begin using it. The MP44 was added to the game by Infinity Ward as a homage to the WWII games they produced.
