Overview

Mario goes spelunking.
Mario goes spelunking.
Super Mario Land was a launch title for the original Game Boy in 1989. It was the first "true" Mario game for the system, even though there were a few differences between it and the other Mario platforming games, such as it's slightly higher difficulty level, the tropical/desert setting of Sarasaland, and the sections where Mario rides in vehicles. It was the first game in the Super Mario Bros. Franchise not to be set in the Mushroom Kingdom and the first game to feature vehicles that Mario could use. Other than the piranha plant the game features all new enemies, many who never appeared again. The Super Mario Land series had no input from Shigeru Miyamoto, it was instead developed by Nintendo R&D1 with Gunpei Yokoi acting as the producer.

Plot

Mario travels to Sarasaland, where his goal is to rescue Princess Daisy from the alien Tatanga. To defeat him he must travel to the four Kingdoms of Sarasaland, each with it's own theme and boss to defeat. After the final battle, Daisy will give Mario a kiss and take him back to her castle, the dirty devil.

The story text from the instruction manual

Once upon a time, there was a peaceful world called Sarasaland. In this world there were 4 kingdoms named Birabuto, Muda, Easton and Chai. One day, the skies of Sarasaland were suddenly covered by a huge black cloud. From a crack in this cloud, the unknown space monster Tatanga emerged to try to conquer Sarasaland. Tatanga hypnotized the people of all the kingdoms so that he could control them in any way he liked. In this way he took over Sarasaland. Now, he wants to marry Princess Daisy of Sarasaland and make her his queen. Mario came to know of these events, and he has started on a journey to the Chai Kingdom where Princess Daisy is held captive, in order to restore peace to Sarasaland. Can Mario defeat Tatanga, release people from his interstellar hypnosis, and rescue Princess Daisy? It's all up to you and Mario's skill. Go for it Mario!

Stages

  • Birabuto Kingdom - The first kingdom, with a desert theme, including stages that take place on top of giant palm trees and inside of pyramids.
  • Muda Kingdom - Takes place in water-themed levels, including an underwater stage where Mario pilots a submarine.
  • Easton Kingdom - An Easter Island-themed stage, with some underground levels.
  • Chai Kingdom - An Asian-themed kingdom, with a final level that takes place in the air.

Bosses

  • King Totomesu - King Totomesu is a large sphinx creature who jumps up and down shooting fireballs at Mario.
  • Dragonzamasu - Dragonzamasu is a large seahorse creature who will swin up and down and shoot fireballs at you, this battle takes place in your Marine Pop.
  • Hiyoihoi - Hiyoihoi is a much larger version of the tokotoko who will attack by throwing rocks at Mario, if well timed Mario can use these rocks for strategic jumps.
  • Biokinton - Biokinton is a large cloud that attacks Mario by throwing chickens at him while he pilots his Sky Pop. For real. There is no secret switch in this battle and it leads directly into the final boss Tatanga.
  • Tatanga - The final boss, Tatanga fires cannonballs that split into three and takes twice as many hits to kill as the other bosses. This battle also takes place in the Sky Pop and there is no secret switch.

Gameplay

Adventures in Chai Kingdom.
Adventures in Chai Kingdom.
Super Mario Land plays a lot like any other Mario platforming game, you move using the D-pad, hold B to run and hit A to jump, however there are a few distinct differences. Firstly, when Mario grabs a fire flower he will not be transformed into Fire Mario, but rather he will gain the ability to throw "super balls." Super balls bounce off of objects instead of disintegrating like fireballs do. Other than that they're used exactly as Mario uses fireballs.

In this game, for the first time, Mario pilots vehicles. He first climbs into a personal submarine called the Marine Pop, which fires torpedoes. Later, he climbs into his airplane, called the Sky Pop, which also fires missiles and basically controls exactly as the submarie does, only in the air instead of underwater.  During these levels, the screen scrolls automatically, and so obtaining a super mushroom, which makes Mario and his vehicle larger, can sometimes be a disadvantage, as it makes it harder to avoid being trapped behind obstacles as the screen scrolls to the right.

Every third level ends with a boss fight, where Mario is challenged to either defeat the boss with fire balls, (or torpedoes/ missiles on the submarine/ airplane levels), or avoid the bosses attacks and run past it to activate the secret switch which instantly defeats the boss. When you fight Biokinton and Tatanga there is no secret switch available for you to hit. All other levels have two exits, one of which is located towards the top of the screen, the other at the bottom. If Mario reaches the higher exit, then he is rewarded with a mini-game, where he can win either a fire flower or up to 3 lives. Collecting 100 coins will earn Mario and extra life and earning 100,000 points will net him an extra continue. It is the only game in the Super Mario Land series that does not offer the option to save.

After you beat the game, you unlock "Hard Mode," where enemies are moved around on the stages to make them more difficult. If you beat the game a second time, then you unlock a "Level Select Mode", and you can choose to replay any of the games 12 levels.
