At a GDC panel in San Francisco, Team Meat showed of a special version of Super Meat Boy in a box, a so-called “Ultra Edition” of the PC retail release that’s poised to hit stores across North America. Shortly after, Team Meat used its Twitter account to show off the box art for this edition, which helped to shed more light on what makes it so “ultra.”

In a nutshell, Ultra Edition is a collector’s edition that includes the standard variety of special items: an art book, a soundtrack, and so on. The catch here is that this version of the game will only cost 20 dollars when it hits later this April.

== TEASER ==Here’s what you’ll get via Joystiq, who touched base with Team Meat after seeing the content teases on the front of the game's box art:

  • A 40-page art booklet that incorporates SMB information and also Team Meat’s comics.
  • The game’s soundtrack and some other audio files
  • A poster of the PC box art

Not a bad collection for 20 bucks, eh? Joystiq reports that this will see a release in stores beyond just Wal-Mart and Amazon, so keep your eyes peeled later this April.  Here's  what the front of the Ultra Edition will look like, by the way:

@CoolRssL:  buy it on steam (or this) and play it with your ps3 controller. It is the only way but  it is worth it.

Part of Team Meat's agreement with Microsoft prevents a PS3 version from ever happening.

I already own it on Steam but I really do want a box copy. I think I will get this too, just for my collection =)

These devs are worth spending the extra cash. They seem like good dudes.

It sucks Microsoft screwed them over.

How so? I read the gamespot article, but the only thing negative about MS in there was that it shipped the same week as Costume Quest which it was not supposed to.
I mean, atleast they wanted the game, unlike some other console manufacturers out there.

That sucks! I didn't know that.

@mnzy:  Releasing day of Costume Quest wasn't really it. They were pushed to the back of the release window and Team Meat says Microsoft gave them no support so most their sales were because they released on steam.

Basically if they didn't have to be XBOX only (well at least from what I can tell anyway they can't release on PSN, contractually, wii they just cant get the game to work on in a good enough state to be worth releasing) on console they could have expanded their sales into the PSN market as well (which I read Team Meat says they could have released in as few as 4 days) and made more sales. Since Microsoft virtually ignored them (seemingly) it resulted in fewer sales on XBLA- which, making it XBOX console exclusive, actually resulted in losing them money rather than netting them any.

Third time I'm gonna buy this, and it's still worth it.

#38 Posted by jking47 (1207 posts) -

crap, I already own this game, and a smaller picture sized version of the pc box art....but I want this too

Wait, wait, wait...you got a few things wrong here.
SONY were the ones who had no interest in the game and that (and the fact that they were exhausted) was the reason it is not on PSN.
They just used it as leverage against Microsoft to maybe release it on PSN.
If Sony would have wanted it, they would have made a different contract right away. Also it is not really eclusive to the 360.
That is also why they would be able to release it on Steam and Wii, even if that does not happen in the end.

And since it is not on PSN, people were saying they were not able to port it. So he, the programmer, proved them wrong by making it run on the PS3 within 4 days. Not that it was close to any releasable state, though.

It is right, Microsoft didn't really support them very much, but to be honest, that is usually the case if you are an unknown indie developer and they had some technical problems on release day (I also couldn't buy it right away).

And that it did better on Steam, I don't know if they can really blame that on Microsoft. It also had alot to do with what the game is and how these types of games are accepted on the PC (which is very well).

This game, so mean, so good. I'll buy it just to have a box with that goodness inside.

#41 Posted by rottendevice (159 posts) -

So, eventually they're going to stop milking this and work on a new game, right?

#42 Posted by CaptRoFL (77 posts) -

I'll get this if it's on Xbox and released in the UK.
So i probably won't be getting it anytime soon, which sucks 'cus i want that awesome soundtrack

I don't want the pcgamer stuff on the front!
#45 Posted by Dudacles (1442 posts) -

I already have the XBLA version. Cool stuff though, I'm glad this game did or is doing well for them.

#46 Posted by LordXavierBritish (6320 posts) -

I have now dedicated forty of my US dollars to this product.
#47 Posted by Sergotron (475 posts) -

Wow... I felt bad for never picking it up just because I was too busy with so many other games. Even after all the great things I have heard about it. If this isn't a sign to finally grab it then I don't know what is.

#48 Posted by Tacoboy1986 (143 posts) -

Dammit! I already have the game and soundtrack, but I want that poster!

#49 Posted by SaucyJack (87 posts) -

$20 well spent I'd say. I already own SMB on Steam, but I only paid $4 for it during the holiday sale.

#50 Posted by Pop (2595 posts) -

Must have that poster!
