Halo 3:

The trip mine is a piece of equipment that can be dropped.  When deployed, the trip mine is stationary until someone (or something) moves over it.  The trip mine then explodes destroying or injuring what went over it.  The trip mine glows orange and beeps as you move closer to you making it easier to avoid.  In other words, don't drive over that... and remember, just because an ally threw it, doesn't mean it won't blow up when you go by it!
