Final Fantasy XIV Online Gets Reborn

It's good.... not great, but good. Got it for $23 from GMG, good enough for me.

This game creeps me out.

Server issues aside, I'm having a great time with this game. It's league better than v1.0. It runs smoother, combat is more engaging and fun, graphics are more stunning, menus are well designed, the list goes on. If you have any interest in a good MMO or like Final Fantasy, give it a try. But be warned that Square's website is.... not great. There is a barrier to entry, but I think its worth it.

Story is great and puts other MMORPGs to great shame. Gameplay on PS3 is very enjoyable, as are the visuals and the framerate. Also, cheap. PS3 version = access to PC version = will eventually be able to convert to the PS4 version.

An MMO with a monthly subscription in the year of our lord 2013 is basically the dumbest thing to me. Had an okay time playing in the beta, though.

Surprisingly enough, I had a lot of fun in the open beta 2 weeks ago. Coming from FF XI I feel like it's way too easy and streamlined, but hey, I guess that's what people want. I'm actually thinking about getting it, even though putting a significant amount of time into any MMO isn't really possible.

You say, in comparison to all the great storytelling in western MMOs?
Because, yeah WoW and Guildwars have some quality writing.

I'll concede you that the presentation is not very clear, and some of the delivery seems inadequate and sometimes unintentionally ridiculous, but all in all, the plot of ff14 is an enjoyable albeit generic fantasy "epic" adventure. Not great, but not really bad or an effective representation of japanese storytelling.
It also takes a page of Guild Wars and FF11, in the sense that it actually manages to tell a structured story that fleshes out the universe, which is more than I can say for a lot of other MMOs.

If you want to turn this into a pissing contest though, I'd say in general, most games have rather terrible storytelling, with a few exceptions that are NOT all western. We concede a lot of licenses to games, because we enjoy other parts of the experience, but if you really analyze it, a lot of wester AAA game narratives fall into as many tropes and storytelling vices as their eastern counterparts... It's just culturally easier for us to digest them.

Its never wise to express absolutes like that, since they are rarely ever true.
..maybe you were just making a funny though... in that case.. yeah some of the lines in the trailer sound laughingly silly... but its still a gross generalization....

This trailer said so little it's almost comical. All I got from it was "this game world will metaphorically fellate you to make you feel like a super special hero"

This game is so much fun. It definitely requires a significant time investment to get to the meat of it, but once you do it really shines as a successor to FFXI.

This game is extremely fun. Not going to be for everybody, for certain, but anyone who's interested in MMOs should definitely check it out. The later content (35+) gets seriously challenging, and it's a nice change of pace.

When I AM able to log in I find myself enjoying this game greatly. The combat is smooth, the game runs sleek as hell even with maximum graphics, the story isn't as bad as a lot of games I've seen, a lot of the dialogue is actually pretty funny, every class I've played has been pretty fun including the healing and crafting classes, and I like how starting from level 10 there are party instances to help newcomers with the basics of party play.

I do have gripes, as does everyone, but the biggest would be trying to level more then three classes is a monumental task... until level 15. At level 15 you can enter dungeons and you tend to gain half to an entire level per dungeon run. Getting to 15 is... painful to say the least however. Even with leves, which are semi-randomized quests you requisition and you get 3 allotments every 12 hours so you can't really grind them out but the XP they give helps substantially with leveling your off classes.

Good to hear it gets more difficult. As a long time devotee to FFXI, my only complaint with FFXIV 2.0 so far was that it wasn't kicking my ass like FFXI did from front to back. I will fully admit that no one can ever get away with making an MMO as difficult as FFXI again though.

But yea, I'm ten levels in and I'm enjoying FFXIV. It's more "Final Fantasy" than anything SE has put out since.. FFXI really.

@scaramoosh: Why do you people always have to make it about bashing Japan? Western or Eastern, MMO storytelling is still garbage in general. At least this game tries to have a decent story.

My opinion might not be the most objective one around considering I played FFXIV 1.0 and didn't think it was bad, I mean at launch it was terrible but it got better and the community was amazing.
Anyway I'm having a blast with ARR. Having just gotten the airship pass, and having seen the cutscenes that come with that, I'm even more excited with where the story is headed. The cutscenes reminded me a lot of older FF games.

I can only assume that the purpose of this 4 minute (!) long trailer was to assure the viewers that it really is a Final Fantasy game, despite there being no game-play shown. I'll take everyone's word for the game being fun, but man, that trailer… On the other hand, I suppose it's possible that the trailer was designed to point out all the things that they have changed from version 1.0, and it just flew over our heads because we didn't play the original?

Woo! Bad voice acting but awesome game! Switch to Japanese voices and problem solved. These videos and articles on the net don't do it justice.

The original games subscription model was really odd to me when I played it, but the PS3 version worked surprisingly well for me and it looks like they changed a lot of the systems that seemed complex for complexity's sake.

The fact that I could do everything with the controller was kind of amazing.

I think I'll try it when they do that PS4 port. Still a little gun-shy from how the first release turned out, but looks promising.

Game is great for me so far. It's the first mmo to made me go into party play. The community got a lot of nice people too. Very accessible game. Great for those who wants to venture into mmo for the first time.

I'm interested in checking it out since I'm a sucker for Final Fantasy, but I think I'm done with paying for games and then monthly fees. If it drops in price might be willing to give it a go on PS3/4.

This Crystal Bearers reboot looks dark.

I skipped FFXIV 1.0 because of the reviews and general sense of opaqueness it gave off. Played 2.0 in beta, and decided the revamp is good enough to get my money. I'm a FFXI vet, and this game does pretty well to suit my more casual/leisurely play style.
