Legacy of Kain Returns in Multiplayer Form With Nosgoth

Hello old post!

No, one side is not "just dudes," or "dudepires," if you will. The Summoner is a standout for the Vampire side of things and there is still the potential to add additional classes for the vampires that will add more female roles. Nosgoth prides itself on maintaining the Legacy of Kain lore while taking the gameplay in an entirely new direction. The classes are based off of clans in the LoK universe, which dictates what genders there are.

This looks to make the same mistake that 90% of asynchronous multiplayer games make: one side is "just dudes."

I'd say this has 2013's Rage-Vomit Inducing Opportunism category in the bag.

@royce_mccutcheon: I hate to sound like I'm defending this new game in anyway so I'll break this line off by saying Raziel would have a low opinion of humans having spent hundreds of years regarding them as cattle and the fact that humans have a well protected stronghold and well equipped soldiers with flame throwers and crossbows scattered through out Nosgoth, show that the humans made a successful stand at some point. This whole conversation has made me want to play SR1 again so I guess some good came out of his craptastic excuse for a LOK game.

3. So i see they told the lore of Legacy of Kain to fuck right off and just looked at the concept art of the old games and said "yeah that looks cool let's put that in!"

*Takes a deep breath* well...I’ll just consider this a perverse cash in that has no actual ties to the series and just continue enjoying my unconcluded Legacy of Kain series.

You couldn’t just reboot the series by reintroducing us to Kain via having us play through the paradox timeline?! GOD DAMN IT!!!

@paraptorkeet: Dumah was defeated by humans out of his own arrogance and complacence, and was taken surprise by an ambush, it wasn't part of a great war. Raziel mocks him for this, and The Elder God says it himself - "Dumah and his offspring failed to see an attack coming from the least likely assailants" - "least likely assailants" clearly implies humans were of little consequence during this time.

The decaying buildings are the result of cataclysmic events destroying the landscape brought on by the corruption and eventual ruin of the Pillar of Balance, not a war. This is also reflected in the physical state and appearance of his brothers and their clans. The world in the time of Soul Reaver is on the brink of destruction.

This doesn't necessarily look terrible, but why the fuck would they use the LoK license for this?

Seriously though, Psyonix is a great company. Have faith people, they're great at listening to input and making ambitious projects.

I'd play this in a heartbeat.

Im crossing my fingers in the hope that the negative reaction to this will results in another developer making a proper LOK or SR game ala XCOM.

@royce_mccutcheon: Right, but between when Raziel fell to when the elder god let him loose, hundreds of years had past. This is why the the vampire's buildings are falling apart and why they themselves had devolved into beasts. In the years Raziel lay dormant the humans rose up against Dumah and kept him dormant by staking him to his throne. There is also a human settlement you can visit after gaining Rahab's soul.

As a long time fan of the LoK series, this is just an insult to the great series it takes it's name from. I can't believe they would cancel Dead Sun after having gone pretty far in and then leaving us with this Free to play generic piece of trash. A series that thrived on it's deeply woven story, interesting characters and mythology, and it's just shoved to the side for this. I abhor this atrocity.

I'm all about constructive criticism and I dislike the haters on most forums and comment threads these days.

That said, this game can just fuck it self and die.

I don't blame the people working on it, but those who mandated this thinking it would be a good idea, shame on you.

I can't think of a Kain fan that wants this. It'll bomb, then Squeenix will say "guess there's no money to be made on this series!" and will seal it away for a thousand years.

At any rate, the timing would have been bad anyway. It's years too late for a proper sequel. A few years ago it might have been justified with vampires being a hot item. Now it would just seem quaint. A proper HD remake of Soul Reaver along the lines of Tomb Raider Anniversary would be great.

I would rather Play Blood Omen 2 again... and that game played like shit.

This just screamed out Shadowrun on the 360 and PC all over again. On the flipside to that though was someone actually made a real-ass shadowrun game later on down the road (Shadowrun Returns)

Here's hoping someone over there at Squeenix/Edios starts making a HD remake of Blood Omen:LoK and Soul Reaver. Not this. This just screams ShadowRun and Gotham City Impostors and look how well those did...

@paraptorkeet: But it's established in the backstory found in the Soul Reaver manual that Kain's conquest had succeeded by the time the events of the game took place. The humans were already defeated and "thoroughly domesticated", Kain was the undisputed ruler of Nosgoth and the land had been divided up and given to his sons. Raziel mentions one of the reasons his brothers were so receptive to his execution was that it was the most interesting and amusing thing to happen in centuries. There was a human resistance, but it was basically a rabble. So I don't know what this war even is.

@the_vein: No they said it takes place after the events that kick off Soul Reaver 1. I take that to mean after Raziel was cast into the pit but before he reemerged. He was cast into the pit for growing wings and thus surpassing his master, before that no Razealim had evolved wings. They looked like normal vampires.

The thing is! If they had set it during the time when Humans wrestle control of the Pillars from the surviving ancient vampires it would have made sense for them to have a winged class. However that would be fucked in a different way because the humans were able to defeat those vampires through use of anti-vampire magic that you see Moebius use in Soul Reaver 2. If they wanted to go with the post BO2/pre-SR era than it would have made more sense to have the surviving Hylden. BUT an even better would have just been the original war between the Hylden and Ancient Vampires pre-Pillars. Gah this is so frustrating!

@d_w: I bet someone saw some Soul Reaver gameplay footage of Raziel gliding with his ruined wings and thought, "I know - lets make it so you can actually fly in our game!" and just ran with it.

Sigh. Oh well. At least Ariel won an Emmy the other night.

This, right here is why this series is so good....you'll notice a significant lack of multiplayer....

It's like they didn't even try. There's so many issues with the lore. I don't know where I should begin. During that time period (between Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver there weren't any flying vampires. Raziel was executed for growing wings. Humans and Vampires at the point weren't really a separate race as all the post Kain vampires were made from humans instead of naturally born like Janos Audron.I could go on, but just don't buy it. Hopefully in like 20 years the IP will be in the hands of people who actually give a shit about the lore and don't want some terrible cash grab.

BUT HOW could they not have the nifty ranged blood sucking that LoK is known for?

Man it's so disappointing that Legacy of Kain: The Dark Prophecy was canceled so many years ago. It sounded like the finale the series deserved.

While I enjoyed the series, I have a friend that got way deep into the Legacy of Kain games back in the PS1/PS2 days. I imagine the fact that the long awaited next game the series is going to a class-based shooter is going to...displease him.

I could not have said it better myself. I loved the heck out of all those games (except Blood Omen 2), and really don't like this idea. I'll check it out if there's a demo, but I'm not excited for this.

It reminds of that Batman Impostors game - and that was pretty good.

i'll say it...Tony Jay would roll over in his grave at this...i love the Kain/Raziel games, but this trailer just makes me cringe.

Raziel is the awesomest...just walking around and gliding in Soul Reaver was such beauty, and his voice actor, Michael Bell, was top-notch as well.

Some desperately concieved multiplayer only games come out DOA. But this one is looking straight up DBA.

This is just branding at its worst.

And a flying vampire doesn't even make any fucking sense in the series lore whereby vampires evolve over time. Raziel emerging from his pupating state in SR1 with wings was significant because it was the first time a vampire had sprouted wings since the original Ancients several millennia prior, elevating him above even Kain. It's only the seminal fulcrum upon which the events of three goddamned games were set into motion.

The only other vampire to possess wings in the series was Janos Audron, the last surviving Ancient, and he would have been dead during this conflict anyway.

I consider my self a pretty level headed person and relies that all the people in this video are just folks that need to eat and pay the bills but this shit needs to die, NOW. I love the Kain series and bought every every single one at full prices with the exception of the first which i came late to.This pile of shit wreaks of the same failure of that garbarge shadow run FPS.

God please smash a meteor into were ever these people are woking at 3am. That would be so cool.

The game itself looks okay... but I can't abide by this horrible misuse of such a great series.

Will look into this out of curiosity but as a fan of the LoK series, hopefully they will see how the Elder Scrolls mmo will probably dive quickly into the abyss then they will make this into a single player RPG set in Nosgoth. At least with Elder Scrolls mmo it seems like it's been around for a while yet this seems like a newer decision by some people who should know better now about how unsuccessful mmos can be on the most part without any kind of legacy in that genre. Plus Square hasn't had the best of luck with mmos, so definitely not going to give this much hope on being average.

For a franchise with such a rich history and fiction, being reduced to a free-to-play multiplayer game feels like a slap in the face. I really loved those games it's super disappointing that they'd build this type of competitive game when the fans have been barking like mad for a true follow-up. Nosgoth looks like a game prototyped for something else that has been awkwardly crammed into the LoK universe.

As always I will reserve final judgements for when the game is completed but seriously, this just seems ill-advised.

What did i just watch?
I mean sure.. a Legacy of Kain MMO could have it's charms, something that throws you right into the world.
But this does not look anything like that?!

This looks like just another arena Shooter that throws you into heavily instanced hubs between matches.
Even with their track record on multiplayer games (UT, Homefront, Gears, ME3) they need to show something way more interesting than a mere team deathmatch multiplayer, especially if it's F2P.

Until then i consider myself "unimpressed"..
