I like that they are giving people loads of reasons to play online, i assume factions are platform specific? It would be cool if they took the faction data from all platforms so everyone can work together, even if they can't play together.

My big fear is if this game is Online Only despite having Single Player stuff. If it's Online Only there is a good chance that I'll get it MUCH later if I get it at all.

@cikame: Factions aren't platform-specific. They're bringing the entire player base together, at least as far as points and which faction is winning is concerned. You won't be able to do, like, cross-platform faction team battles or anything like that.

Sounds as meaningful as Smash Brother's character war thing except not linked to characters, instead linked to randomly composed teams.

Oh man that faction thing seems awesome. Gives you constant reasons to keep doing content even if its Single player stuff to contribute to the Faction Wars. I wonder what the rewards are though?

@cikame: The faction stuff is cross platform it seems. Or this article on Polygon implies that it is anyway. I'm betting online fights and stuff aren't cross platform. You can't fight someone on an XB1 if you're on PS4, but the faction points you get contribute to the factions regardless of platform.

We've been dealing with DLC characters for a while now. It's a sad existence we are forced to accept.

I'm pretty sure the factions have nothing to do with what platform you play on. The purpose of the factions seem to be character specific (i.e. if you like playing as Sub-Zero, you'll be aligned in the Lin Kuei; Cassie Cage, Jax in Special Forces. etc)

While I appreciate that NetherRealm is always adding weird stuff like this to their fighting games, this loses a lot of luster by being tied to the genre. How is this any different or more interesting than just playing ranked matches online and ascending that ladder? Oh, you might unlock some faction specific profile icons/art or whatever. Yay?

If this were a feature in, oh, I don't know, Shaolin Monks 2, then I'd be getting excited, and I don't even know how it would impact that theoretical game.

Faction assignment could be tricky. If people can choose, they will often try to get into the faction they perceive to be winning the most. If it's based on which characters are played, then easier to learn or more competitive fighters are going to give certain factions an unbalanced edge. It could be all random, but then people might feel like it doesn't really matter what they do if a different team is always winning.

This seems incredibly tricky to implement, and the player base could very well not care about it. I hope it works; I'm just skeptical.

Looks great, now it's a matter of balancing the factions rather than have a single monopoly.

Still, Mortal Kombat X looks utterly terrific. The folks behind the Mortal Kombat games are so peculiarly ambitious, and have been so since they have stopped making arcade games. To see faction mode mounted to their already impressively varied fighting system is a clear confirmation that this game will either be a brilliant success or a resounding disappointment (and, my goodness, I hope it's the former). The attention to their worlds, vision, and game variety makes other fighting games seem flat to me, despite other games' intention on being more taught mechanically.

...what I'm getting at here is that Mortal Kombat is what Smash Bros is too many people or what Haze was to a more select group of people.

@csl316: I think it'll probably wind up being 40/35/x/x/x
