PlayStation 4 Launchstravaganza: Part 01

Obligatory future comment. I think this console might do well.

I come back to these console launch or console unveil videos every so often. Especially after a new console launch (Pro, PS5, One X, XBSX, etc.). Kind of sad that the latest console release stream was post covid and all remote. I miss streams like this. I actually got excited for a launch stream when the PS5/XBSX were coming out but realized there was no way the crew at the time would be in an office by launch.

Jeff was so like aggro in this. It makes it a little hard to go back to. Hard to describe but like he comes across as if he doesn't want to share the spotlight of showing off the console. Like weird alpha male gamer vibes. I don't know. I don't know what it is. He's just a bit like punchy and aggressive sometimes. Maybe he just knew they had a limited time to cover everything. Maybe it was a bad day. Nothing huge or whatever, just a little annoyance I have when coming back to these.

Still enjoy coming back to these though. Its also funny to see the crew trying voice commands and other features, like camera log in, that just ended up never actually being used or completely forgotten about.

Watching some archived launch videos - so PS4 launch videos are viewable for all, but Vita launch is premium only? Odd.

Took a really long time for them to show off the interface and it was pretty confusing with the bouncing around in menus on two systems, but great to see them checking out/enjoying the new system.

@bam_boozilled: In a word, no. But I believe it was about how Xbone is 720 vs ps4 being 1080. It's essentially a bunch of people getting mad at him for saying "Whatever, it's just graphics, it still looks good." A year ago, he said that 1080 and 60fps should be the standard for next gen. They're saying he's a hypocrite, but it's a whole lot of nothing.

Man, not being able to change your PSN name sucks... I was really hoping that they'd give people the option with the new hardware.

I would be very happy having video game playing marathons as part of my job. Very happy.

Liking the UI of the PS4, despite it's rough start. Compared to the 360, it looks a hell of a lot more welcoming and there's some neat stuff going on.

Plus hell, the Vita just become a possible future purchase one day for me.

I see that people still think it's funny and amusing to send friend requests and messages nonstop when there's a livestream :/

The surprise the crew had at the clunkiness of PS4's social bits in What's New is hilarious. It's a social networking service, of COURSE its a design trainwreck! :P

I don't understand Brad's problem with the patching process. On the 360, you could cancel out of a patch, but you were signed out of Live for the duration of the game, so network features were unavailable. The PS3 just straight-up said, "Naw, no game for you!" The WiiU had the same thing as the 360. This one seems to allow you to play games as the patch downloads, but doesn't kick you off of the network (but doesn't allow online play). How is this a step backwards?

You know what, all that interface stuff at the beginning makes me want a PS4 more than the games I'd play (which admittedly would just be BF4, Killzone, and Resogun). That stuff ran so damn smooth compared to PS3.

@csl316: 48 hours of Extra Life, then two 8 hour console launch streams. These guys must have some kind of crazy death wish. Video game journalists sure are a wild breed. I'll guess I'll never understand it...

I like how after Extra Life, an 8 hour stream is easy mode for these guys.

I feel like most of these features I'll never use. I am excited to play around with it, though. It seems like a huge improvement

looks ok. not as excited about this as i thought i would be, but ill give it till next year to start picking up some speed, cause as of right now there is no compelling reason to get this....

You know ripping on including CD support is all well and good but it's actually kind of a meaningful feature for someone like my parents. The box needs to cater to everyone if it's going to be a true all in one living room solution and that includes having features that may seem ancient or useless to some.
