Vinny: "I can fix that, let's fix that."

Any other site would have just said "I don't know, problem must be on your end."

And it was just so we could see some stupid menu icons.

That's why you guys will always have my support.

Remember when people yelled at Spoony when he was going to LP Deadly Premonition? I think we can call it even, now.

Spoony is nothing compared to Giant Bomb, so there's no real comparison.

Yeah, I'll have to disagree with you there. When it comes to ripping (lol pun) on games, Spoony is superior. He's funnier and has more first hand experience with the games he talks about. Not to mention that he's a one-man outfit. His videos are very impressive considering he does all of the writing, production, and editing. Obviously GiantBomb has much, much more content, so they can't put as much time into each video. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Spoony has some of the best quality gaming videos on the internet.

I like Spoony, wish he put out more videos than he has the last couple of years and couldn't care less if different sites do similar bits with the same games but as funny as Spoony is, more than half his jokes are just riffs he heard on MST3k.

I think you'd have to be a real Law and Order freak to get this, but the main character is the guy who played Eddie Newman in the three part L&O episode that has Dets. Curtis and Briscoe in LA for the first of the three parts. Newman's a big shot director who's tried for killing and butchering his wife, while being defended by ADA Ross's ex-husband's law firm.

Looks like he's done a TON of other one off roles in shows, but thanks to TNT's unending airing of Law and Order, this is what I'll always know him for.

Wow, with his crazy hair in this game I didn't make that connection. If only McCoy hadn't had him hold that blade while he was testifying...

What difference does it make if something "seems" obscure. At the time it's all obscure, doesn't matter what it is in retrospect. I feel like there's no defending Myst but that's me.

This has probably been pointed out elsewhere in the thread but did anyone notice one of the headlines in the Virtual Herald was a stab at how delayed BattleCruiser 3000 was? Take-Two was one of Derek Smart's first publishers. :)

I was talking purely about looking at the puzzles in retrospect, though. Once you've figured out the trick, all of Myst's puzzles contain an internal logic that's easy to follow. The elements that go into solving the puzzles in Ripper, though, just seem disparate, messy and confusing even after you know how they're supposed to work.

Funnily enough, I'm guessing time will remember Myst more clearly than it recalls Ripper. ;)

@SaturdayNightSpecials:

No idea. I googled "gwar fear box" and "guare fear box". Nothing. Even just "fear box" didn't bring up anything besides a ghost hunting blog describing how some machines and electrical devices emit frequencies that can cause sickness and paranoia. I assume that's what Jeff was probably talking about.

After looking through the entire list of comments, no one as talked about so it's now MY JOB!

After watching the first few mins. (mainly after the mention of the SNL skit), I had a "phenix down" moment about the weird connection to the that skit. So I looked it up & found out that Ripper pre-dates the SNL skit by about 4 years, Will Ferrell is the one who wrote it, & so that pretty much means that it's just a happy coincides.

Now time to watch the rest...

I have not laughed that hard a LONG time. Loved having all four of them (though if the games aren't overtly funny, I think Dave/Vinny is still gonna work best).

This game is a fucking TRAINWRECK. It was made in an era where padding="longer" gameplay, and that was the rule, not the exception. I mean those puzzles aren't "difficult," they require leaps that Evel Knievel wouldn't dare to attempt.

@tophernav: I'm going to have to disagree with you there.

Spoony does nothing but nit-pick and scream about every single thing in the games he is playing. If he's not complaining about a game feature, he's complaining about a small bit of design that is inconsequential to the game. I also hate the fact that he seeks every manner possible to profit off of his fans, including taking videos that they created off YouTube and putting them on his account on blip.tv and putting a stupid little intro video on there as if that makes up for the fact that he's using them to get money.

Let's also not forget the blowup he had after the Mashables a few years back. Yeah, there's no going back from that.

Should also be noted that BC3000AD was considered vaporware at the time - it was announced in 1989 and didn't get released until 1996 (2 years after Ripper), and was in such unfinished state at release that it took another year until a working version was released (for free, as an apology to those who bought the broken game).

Definitely agree with Jeff here, I never found this to be acceptable. It's just a great example of poor implementation of new technology (Multimedia!) because everyone was so into the idea of new stuff they just wanted to force you to accept it.

It was more than that. I remember a time in my life when I, like all the bullshit hype artists wanted and a TON of the industry expected, that these kinds of games were ABSOLUTELY the future. They're live-action! JUST LIKE MOVIES!! It's only now that I realize that videogames chasing movies is like the Model-T chasing boat technology: they're somewhat similar things with radically different goals. But videogames STILL feel a massive inferiority complex to movies (any time some bigshot movie director signs on, it's like "OH PLEASE MR MOVIE MAN! Show us lowly game players how it's done!" And the games generally turn out underwhelming or even AWFUL. (See: Boom Blox, Avatar: The Videogame)

@Undeadpool: ...you got some kinda problem with Boom Blox?

I think someone wrote a good article recently on why screenwriters being attached to games isn't necessarily a good thing. But I think I found it in last week's "worth reading" so you can probably just go look for that.

Not especially, but it was definitely a gross example of "OH PLEASE, MR MOVIEMAN! We've only been doing it for thirty years! SHOW US HOW IT'S DONE RIGHT!"

And we got a game that...if you removed Spielberg's name from that game, would you ever GUESS he had any part of it?

But that doesn't take away from the fact that Spoony has some of the best quality gaming videos on the internet.

Spoony is still relevant? In the last couple years the dude's gone completely off the rails, content wise and personally. Openly lashing out at his own community, the messageboards being a total shitshow, his drunken emotional breakdown in one of the Twilight vlogs, and near constant content delays, aside from the fact that much of his content has been so unnecessarily produced as he's transitioned from "plucky upstart sticking to the games he knew as a kid" to "internet guy trying too hard to be popular because he really wants money now."

The vast majority of his content has also always been scripted down to every letter. (Since he likes to fashion himself as a "writer.") Unscripted ability to be funny > intense scripting and re-re-re-re-recording your jokes. Guy was great when he kept it simple, but he's been a wreck for a long time now.

Edit: Just did a random glance at the front page of his site for the first time in a very long time, and one of the videos there is him going through all of his "swag" he picked up at E3. Yeah, that just about sums up what Spoony has become at this point. Completely gross.
