a couple of games use facial animation but this is easily the most convincing i've seen excellent job with the subtle intricacies conveying emotion isn't an easy task even with facial mocap

I do recall L.A. Noire being announced a long time ago, but knowing Rockstar we probably won't be seeing any gameplay of it for another year... Just some more cutscenes. Those mouthes do look pretty impressive!

Ken Motherfucking Cosgrove. I don't think Campbell would be happy about this. 
 
Also whyyyy don't rockstar release any of their games on PC anymore. Between this and RDR I am a very very sad panda

I heard some things about the lip-sync in this being good but hot diggity. 

Kind of crazy to think the last trailer for this game came out in 2006.

After Rockstar gave the modern crime story masterpiece, the wild west game I've always wanted to play, and it looks like LA confidential/Chinatown is getting the same treatment...pre-order done. Also everybody get this for the 360 just to be safe...360 has been 2 for 2 on this engine so far.

fucking awesome face expressions.

This was Exclusive to the Ps3 and being Released and Fully funded by SCEA, but they dropped it after the developer(Team Bondi) took ages to show any progress and Rockstar then picked it up and decided to change it to multi-platform release, so up to an extent he was correct.

The lip syncing looks awesome, the voice mixing however........

Holy fucking shit! THIS LOOKS SO GODLIKE. Whenever they went down this oldy-style movie delivery, it was the right choice to make. Color me excited.

man, that looks freaking awesome.  i wanna know story length, because if it's anywhere near GTA 4 or Red Dead i'm definitely in

I kinda got a 'Taxi Driver' vibe in the beginning.
 
Game looks awesome!

Havent heard about this game in like over 2 years!  So stoked,  I love the !950's noir setting and I have been wishing for a game set in it.  Can't wait!

The best character/voicing I've seen so far. Impressive!

It seems alot of people don't know the premise of this game, in the big article from Game Informer they tell a bit about it, I'll just sumarize some parts of it.
 
There is a reason for why the facial animation has to be so precise and impressive, it's not just for good looks 8-)
 
From my understanding it is crusial for a big part of the game, where you interrogate diffrent people in the game, and when you do that you need to be able to see just by looking at their faces if they are lying, So in order to do that the player must be able to read the charaters faces truly. 
 
The game is not just some Mafia 1 or 2 with alot of action, there is action of course but the investigation part is the biggest one as far as I know. And that is also the part that has me intrigued the most 8-)
 
And yeah the texture on the people faces looks like the miss some details, not sure if that will be cleaned up or if it will be the games look, no mather what it's a tiny part of what looks to be a great game, so I can live with that. 
 
Oh and about Mad Men and 
Aaron Staton which plays the main part,  there is another person involved also 
Michael Uppendahl, which has directed some of the episodes of Mad Men he is in charge of the Directing of the Actors in L.A. Noire

So I am looking forward to Team Bondi and Rockstar Games big project in 2011.

Wow I love the gritty detective crime novel setting. This game will be so great.

Wow. Rockstar is really nailing facial attributes and motion for character models on the head with this one.

Hello, uncanny valley.

The facial animation is powered by a company called Depth Analysis, a sister company of sorts to Team Bondi. They developed a method of capturing the voice actor's performance (neck up) with 32 video cameras, which is then modeled and texture mapped in one process instead of modeling, texture, and animation being three disparate pieces. That is why you see foreheads crinkle and throats move realistically. They didn't have to do any crazy manual animation, it's just a really good recreation of the actors physical performance at the time of the voice recording. I guess it should be considered an actual performance than just VO work. Anyway, I'm surprised nobody's familiar with this already, it's been covered pretty extensively in previews for the game.
 
That said, did anyone else think the lady screaming looked weird, like it was glitching out?

The graphics look a little on the crappy side (low res textures, low poly count) but damn that facial animation is great. I hope the missions aren't as contrived as the ones in RDR or GTAIV.

Looks like the folks at Ninja Theory have some competition in the producing of superb facial animation. Also, that one, I guess, detective looks a lot like Aaron Staton (Ken Cosgrove) from Mad Men.

I really like how the voice work has that kind of tinny quality to it.  Makes it really seem like an old movie from that era

Hot damn! Some uncanny valley business up in here, but I'll be damned if this isn't a huge step forward in real-time facial animation. Good on Rockstar for that! Very impressed. Don't know anything else about the game.. in fact, this is the first I've heard of it, but hey! Awesome mouth animation! What more does a 3D artist need to be thoroughly impressed, eh?

Please Rockstar, don't fuck over the PC like you have been doing lately. I really want to play this game.
