Huh? Mirror's Edge is trial and error. Don't get me wrong, I love the game. I declared it my personal Game of the Year '08. But the first time through the game was just awful! You don't have any memories of trying to jump between drain pipes and falling right through them, over and over and over, until you find the exact angle the game wants you to be facing? Or entering a battle, dying within ten seconds, running the other way, dying within 15  seconds, trying to run past, dying, trying to take cover, dying, trying to go melee, dying, trying to take a weapon, dying again? That's pretty much my entire first playthrough of Mirror's Edge. Failing, failing, failing.  Er, anyway, what was my point...? Oh yeah. You're a sad, false shell of a man! "

I got good at some of the moves I would have ignored otherwise, because of the cheapo challenge rooms near the beginning.  I guess the real trick would be to make it more story driven. "

oh man 2 weeks? really? well the only thing worse than having to do this a crapload of times is doing it a crapload of times and giving up.

For myself and several people that I know, Mirror's Edge was only like that on the first couple of levels. After getting a hang of the controls there is rarely a break in the action. Even when you do die, it's fairly clear what you did wrong. You jumped off that ledge a half second too early and guess what, you fell, because in real life if you're even an inch off then you're off all the way. It made the game much more immersive. Most of the problems he mentioned I never ran into in the game (like rebound jumping - that shit is easy). 
 
He said in this video it took him two weeks to get past this part. There are much harder parts even in the original God of War. It's pretty clear he has some playing issues, with action games anyway. "

I actually got the opportunity to test this game before it came out. This was such a bullshit part, it was actually worse when I was playing it. If you got any damage taken, the challenge would be over. We actually went overtime in the testing because of this shit. This game is awesome, but this part was SO FUCKING FRUSTRATING. Ryan you had time, but we had minutes to finish this part.   

The "sad, false shell of a man" line took on new meaning with each retry. Ugh, so frustrating.

I feel your frustration reminds me alot of the challenges from god of war

I noticed Ryan wasnt doing any of the counters considering that he actually went the unholy route. He was just spamming the same combo over and over.

I beat this on the first try. Not to say I'm some master gamer, but just use the combo extended relic and spam the cross, its easy as hell.

This video was all that I needed to see to remove Dante's from my Gamefly queue. 

Even after this, I still want to play it. 
 
I'm weak. However, not until it drops in price significantly - 10 bucks would be necessary for me to get it.

sticking challenge rooms into the main campaign is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen.

excellent video. this is why I fucking love GIant Bomb. I have always wondered how a reviewer must feel if they can't get past a frustrating part of a game. Now I know.

While I hated the mandatory challenges, and I agree that they are a big design flaw, that hit counter one was extremely easy on the normal difficulty. I completed that one on my first attempt. Staying in the air for 8 seconds took me about 9 attempts though.

Man, this is way easier on the Holy spec. :/

This part right here is what makes me glad i stuck to the holy path for stronger cross attacks

this was not that hard. only had to retry this challenge twice. Ryan forgot to use the other magic in his arsenal to keep up the combo. he made it harder for himself.

This is the same kind of shit I'm having with the later combat challenges in Arkham Asylum, and I completely agree with Jeff that there is no good single reason why they should exist. Predator challenges are fine though...

well, this trial is actually pretty easy IF you equip the relic which pads the time for the combos. with a lvl3-relic you'll get 3(!) seconds more between each hit to make it count for the combo. :)

@Ryan: Thank you for posting this man. I was about to pick this game up on the cheap due to a sale however I came here to double check the reviews and opinions of it. While I'm kind of fine with it being a knock off I thought it would be a fun lil romp through Hell

Classic video. I'm trying to struggle through Tron Evolution and I remembered what a pain this game was for Ryan. I feel for him.
