Platinum is bringing back score based gaming. I hope the PS3 version has leaderboards with viewable replays.

Didn't know the demo was actually out. Having seen this now, fairly interested in it now.

Awesome, showing content JUST AFTER the demo.  People need more content rather than stuff they can experience (if that is doable).

Breaks my heart that this game is only coming out on consoles. It looked like it would have been fun to play.

" For the most part I enjoyed it, though that boss in the demo was a bit tedious. But what I dont get is that essentially you have 3 different moves that all do the same thing.  press X and you dive or slide to cover, Press A and you do a forward backflip dodge, Press the left shoulder button, and you knee slide out of danger.  Am I the only one that felt that all 3 of these moves did the same thing?  On top of that, you expose yourself when you blindfire.. whats the point?  blindfire and target fire are exactly the same animation with the camera slightly zoomed in.  I like the game, I just think they are blinding copying  (as well as blinding omitting) moves from  gears and not fully understanding the purpose of those moves.. "

X is for cover, which... well, puts you in cover. With a physical, impenetrable (with a few exceptions, like the giant boss' cover-destroying attack) barrier between you, the enemies, and whatever projectiles they're throwing at you. It's also only in cover that you can smoke, and the cover vault is one of the few moves that allows you to manually activate bullet time.  A is a dodge roll. It allows you to avoid danger with a small, fast movement (faster than boosting when you only need to move one or two meters, as it lacks that move's long "get up on your feet" animation) that doesn't consume any juice, and is also a means of activating bullet time. Boosting, on the other hand, is for when you need to cover a greater distance that two or three meters quickly, whether it be to avoid danger or approach something. It also consumes juice, and can't be used when the suit's overheated. So the three are useful in very different situations.

There is no blindfire. There's only shooting carefully, which is extra accurate but also slows you down quite a bit, and shooting carelessly, which is less accurate but allows you to move at regular speed. There's another difference, too: in situations where you can manually activate bullet time, you have the option to do so (by zooming), or to simply shoot in "regular time" (by firing without zooming).

It's a very carefully thought-out system, and certainly not blindly copied.

I don't know about this one. I'm getting some Lost Planet vibes off this game in terms of character movement (while not sliding), aiming and firing. Perhaps I'm not much of a Japanese third-person shooter kind of guy. Will try the demo though and see for myself.

I don't really understand the distinction between Eastern and Western shooter design.  There's good design and bad design, fun and not fun.  It just seems like code for "Japanese developers are generally incapable of producing quality gameplay in their shooters".

Regardless, THIS game does look fun, but Brad was right on pointing out how the voice acting sounds like a bad anime dub.  But hey, throw in an eBay reference and those Westerners won't know the difference!

This looks kinda cool.  It does however just simply remind me that I should really try and get my hands on Bayonetta for cheap some time soon.

Awesome action and character animations, but very poor dialogue.
Also, I'm with Brad here, I hope there'll be some puzzle solving or at least some areas where you won't be running and shooting all the time, or it'll get boring real fast.
Finally... Russians, again? Really?? : /

I assume you're only into "Western" genres (shooters, real-time strategy games, racing games, open-world stuff et cetera), because Japan are still absolutely dominating a bunch of genres with games that make their Western competitors seem archaic, dull and grindy in comparison.

Pretty much. Any time I pick up a japanese game, I can tell immediately because they tend to prioritize animation over gameplay and make no attempt at immersion or interactive storytelling. The most awkward trend I've seen, that this game may or may not be an end to, is Japanese developers trying to filter Western gameplay styles into their games and it just feeling shoddy. Resident Evil 5 is a key example of that.

On thing I notice that I always think about, and it's a slight thing, is in GTA or something, if you take your character and run into the wall, there's an animation there where the player character reacts to the contact and stops or moves in a different way. In Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet, Lost Planet 2 and others that I've played, they keep doing the standard run animation but not getting anywhere. Maybe it's unfair because all the examples I'm picking are Capcom but I know there's others. In the modern day of gaming, that just seem inadequate to me.

Dead Rising felt like a real success to me and the more I think about it, the more that feels like an accident. It's so awkward in a lot of the execution of its ideas that it becomes an actual game of survival, which is what a good zombie game should be, in my opinion.

Me as well.

Also, and I haven't played the demo, but from what I've seen, there's far more extensive slow motion you can do by flipping out of slides and such, and I think Ryan missed it by skipping the tutorial.

After playing the demo myself, I have to say the the game looks AMAZING visually, but the gameplay is just not where it should be.  The shooting just doesn't feel very solid, and you'll find yourself getting killed for no real reason (the first time, I was crushed by a car that came flying out of nowhere, that I'm guessing the developers didn't think that there would be anyway that the player would be standing there, and the next time I was just magically blown up.  No idea how).  Could be good, but my guess is it'll only be worth picking up when it's had a nice little price drop.

?_? bayonetta was good also i thought dead rising was meh everything was a time limit and the only objectives you had outside the main story were just escort missions(worst part of any game) which were put also on time limits..

This, I really can't agree with. In fact, I find that Japanese games generally prioritize mechanics more than Western games, which are often more focused on delivering something cinematic and believable than something that actually plays well. That's not to say Western games play poorly -- it's just that when something mechanically outstanding comes along, it's often Japanese.

I actually prefer the Japanese way of handling this. When I run into a wall and the character does some stop animation or turns another way, that just feels awkward to me. It looks more natural, but it feels wrong, because my character is doing something I didn't tell him to do.

@Icemael: Can you give me an example of Japanese games that have fluid animations? Lost Planet 2 is a recent example of how the gameplay is borderline ruined by the animations looking and acting completely prerendered and linear when compared to western games. Maybe I'm just playing the wrong ones but they all seem to do this. Even in something like Super Mario Galaxy, the physics and animations feel very dated.

To me, not having the wall animation, among others, shatters immersion because it's similar to broken AI repeating animations only i'm controlling it and, similarly, I can't see how it feels wrong for the character to actually react to the world they're in.

@Razor: You honestly should not talk about the game until you play it, is nothing like those games and is much more fluid. The controls are pretty spot on. It is definitely not generic, this is definitely a case where people are judging the book by it's cover.

I played the demo last night.  I love Mikami.  The guy knows how to do action.  But the mech suit future soldier style is not my scene.  Also, having a football jock hero makes this game even less tolerable.

Rocket boosting is neat looking, but as you saw in this video, it's easy to get caught on edges or have the camera go funny and be sliding the wrong way.   It's also quite easy to rest poking out of a corner and be able to aim at enemies with precision and never let them hit you.  I killed the demo boss standing still last night.  Also, destructible cover is arbitrary and too infrequent; and you can't do simple things with your super awesome athletic tech, like drop a few feet down to another platform.  Your character is glued to the floor at all times.
