The most Giant Bomb thing I've ever seen: Jeff and Dave theorizing about Star Wars while Ryan dances with gorgeous mo-cap in an otherwise old and crappy looking MMO. And the X Files theme plays in the background.

@Luckster: They don't care and neither does anyone here. The point of the video was to fuck around and have fun during the final hours of an MMO, not provide a "review" of it.

That was painful to watch. It's WoW kids commenting on Galaxies. You might as well get podiatrists to comment on ophthalmology - they might be related by genre, but they're two different beasts. The video was full of misinformation. Couldn't they have had at least ONE Galaxies veteran? They're "playing" the game with a low CL character, starter ship, etc. The player even admits he only logged in about five hours and starts complaining. FYI, almost all MMOs since EQ suck the first few hours. In fact, I'd argue, you'd have to clock a good 10+ hours in before the game starts to get "fun". I invested 100+ hours into Warcrap before tossing it aside.

Galaxies received many unjust criticisms in this video. Was it perfect? No. Is any MMO perfect? Heck no. Don't watch this video if you're looking for a decent review of Galaxies' last hours.

Deary me, I played pre-ordered and was an early player of Galaxies. All my friends in college were. We played for two months. In that time we all massed some stupid amount of money and the largest damn houses available. The game was stupid broken and really more of a chore than entertainment back then. After the two months, that much money and the houses we just bailed, seemed like such a dumb game.

It's funny because it won't actually end.

There are dozens of private servers for SWG that a lot of people play and will continue to do so.

That's good to hear. SWG is not something I ever want to try, but it's great that there are people that preserve games abandoned by the publisher.

I always wanted to play Phantasy Star Online. I missed the boat when it was on Dreamcast. I missed the boat when it was on Gamecube and Xbox. Then it came to PC and I had a Mac. Finally I got a Windows laptop this year and got to play through all three episodes through Schtack's private server. It was so satisfying to wail on Dark Falz with other random dudes in 2011.

It's nice that online games don't simply cease to exist, if their fans care enough.

it's hard to believe people were paying to play this game up until now.

What little remains of the social classes in this game is probably what still kept it alive. Mixing music and making obese dancers is more fun than it has any right to be. The social classes went well with keeping the chatroom aspect of MMOs entertaining for people who liked, you know, talking to people instead of watching mobs die.

Basically SWG is what all the old MMORPGs were all about: being obscure games that none knew existed, played by people who mostly used it as a chatroom. Most people forget that WoW is an exception in the genre. MMORPGs weren't supposed to be played by more than 500 people cause they're terrible videogames by design.

I just told my girlfriend, who just started playing her first MMO with me in SWTOR, about what this game used to be. she commented that it sounds like she'd enjoy it a lot more. As it is it's hard to pull her out of SWTOR's cantinas; she likes to make her hot Twi'lekk dance on the stage in the Dealer's Den

LOL DAAAAVE. I did actually play the beta for weeks or a month, but you know...hopeful? So then I got in my CE of FFXIV. Installed. Character, city, cutscene, hour of play "wow this shit didn't change AT ALL from beta, not AT ALL, and it was broken as hell". The box is pretty as hell..but I played less than 2 hours on retail.

Aww man they mentioned Earth and Beyond... I think that was my favorite MMO. Played it from launch to close, it was sooooo good to me at the time. In my opinion it was way better than EVE; only because the spaceflight adn combat was actually hands-on rather than the sort of click-to -move or targeting based thing EVE does. Man I miss that game now.

Also - I remember playing this game at launch. I was a pistoleer/musician, but I did all my leveling, as Dave said, sitting in Cantinas playing music for people that needed their Spirit (or whatever it was called) restored. The nice thing was that I found a macro that created an infinite loop of playing music and asking for tips in local chat. I would leave my laptop on all day while I was in class, so 8 hours later when I got home I had a mad stack of XP and credits. Probably the least effort for the most reward I have ever put into a video game.

I've been waiting for this video ever since The Matrix Online's farewell video. Thank you Giant Bomb crew for posting this awesome/hilarious content.

Bungie is working on an MMOFPS for next-gen consoles. They are working directly with Sony and Microsoft to build online systems capable of handling this. Activision didn't give Bungie hundreds of millions of dollars and control of the IP to make just another FPS or RTS. Bungie WILL figure out how to make an MMOFPS for next-gen consoles that has gameplay that is as good--if not better--than Halo.

About Jeff's idea for depicting lightsaber combat:

I'm almost positive I read an article about LOTR Online during it's development, and the designers were talking about a new combat system they've created where characters would have two bars: stamina and health.

When in combat, the hero would never get hit. Instead, he would start blocking and parrying sword strikes, just like in the films, until his stamina runs out in which he would begin to get hit and take actual health damage before he shortly got killed.

It's nowhere to be seen in the game proper now, I think, so did I just imagine reading about this?!

I imagine they decided it was added complexity with no added value. It's an interesting idea for a health system, but you have to design a valuable combat system around it.

The Star Wars D20 RPG actually used a very similar system.

Such an entertaining package with all the Star Wars craziness in the background and a lot of excellent discussion going on. I especially loved the Meridian talk since that was very exciting and interesting. The memories sounded much more interesting and exciting than anything I ever experienced during my brief tourist visits in any of the more current, streamlined MMOs. Granted, I don't think I'll ever really get into a game resembling the iterations of massive online games to date but who knows where we might go from here in the future.

Ugh, Giant Bomb, please stop taking phone calls.

Unfortunately they never will. I think it is safe to say that we are in a distinct minority. That said, i am willing to bet if calls 'stopped' no one would miss them, other than the people who call in, who are, in themselves, a distinct minority or group.

Anyways there's not much you can do about it. At least the first 57 minutes were call free and that is a lot, and they weren't nearly as constant like the SNES party. They are bound to take calls on any major event, such as the upcoming old-school game party or whatever that thing may be, and that will really sour the whole thing.

It takes away from the show when someone calls in talking about god knows what when all you want to see/hear is bad jokes and chaos about a random Atari game they're playing.

Sigh like why do i even have subscription, if everything is available to free users :(

I am sad.

The original broadcast was available to all users - why wouldn't the archive be?

This was never announced as premium content, so I don't get your expectations.

P.S. - non-subscribers had access to the archive for days now, if they went to GB's justin.tv channel page.

Seriously, why do MMOs always look like such shit? Even in the ones that have decent character models and environments, the animations and collisions seem sub-Mario 64 quality. I know they have to deal with older machine and a lot of characters in an area at once, but you'd think a lot of the visual aspects could be done locally on the PC, and scaled up for the faster machines. Maybe when one of them looks like an actual playable game and not a janky proof-of-concept mockup, I'll actually play one for more than a couple hours. (This is more of a general complaint, I know Galaxies launched in 2003. Still holds for Old Republic, from what I've seen of it.)

Properly tracking collisions or projectiles would put too much stress on the server, as that stuff is still handled server-side.

That said, after playing for a few days and around 20 hours, I think The Old Republic's art direction is fantastic. Still the occasional sparse expanses of nothingness, but a lot of nice looking assets - particularly in the urban areas.

MMO's will always lag behind the technical curve for many reasons, some of which you address yourself, but TOR is wayyyy better looking than Galaxies, from what I'm seeing here.
