I signed up to be a tester for this game months ago and finally got into the Pre-Alpha yesterday. Played about an hour of it today. I'm not going to say I really have any grasp of the game mechanics (after all, it's pre-alpha, so there's little to no explanation of anything, and most items have nondescript placeholder names), but the game seems intriguing so far. I'm anxious to play more of it and see how it progresses as they add more stuff and how the difficulty ramps. I really like the art style.

Looks like an interesting setting, and I am a sucker for pretty mush any top down rpg, so I think this will be a must buy for me. Seems like maybe a little too much emphasis on the crafting system for my tastes, but if the combat is fun and the story decent, I can't see myself not liking it.

I like the swedish accent, and I LOVE the slight hesitation at 0:39. This seems cool though. Swede power!

@RedRocketWestie: No I get that there are more than 6 abilities and you can customize them. I mean 6 buttons to push during combat doesn't seem like it will get very complex, it's 2 per character during combat.

I'm not hating on it at all, have been actively following the game and think it's looking great.

As a swede Im buying this, almost regardless of quality. It seems pretty cool though. He just says that its six abbilities at the same time, so there is probably tons to choose from. and 6 abilities is enough in a real-time game for me, considering you got almost none in games like Jagged Aliance and that game seems cool too. Gotta love that swedish accent too, reminds me to play some just cause 2!

6 abilities across 3 dudes. and the simplicity of tank/healer/dps combo. Old school RPGs? WTF does it have to do with those.

Unless this game has incredible dialogue reveal in the next video this looks just like a dungeon crawler. And considering how ofhandedly they mention that you can just replace your dead dudes, that's exactly what it sounds like.

How is tank/healer/dps combo not old school? It's been in pen and paper RPGs since the late 70s.

On several levels. It's not just the tank/healer/dps combo, please don't take things out of context, i was refering to the incredible limitations.

  • i'm refering to old school computer rpgs obviously, since that is what the guy in the video is also appealing to
  • the simplicity, in this game 3 dudes/types is all you have, this is a huge difference to old crpgs where variety was the spice of life.
  • the old crps never relied on the blatant, this dudes is tanking all the damage while the healear is just dumping on him all the time keeping him alive the entire encounter model, this is a new common model from MMOs
  • those games never relied on the triple combo, while the archetypes existed you could just as well adventure differently
  • 6 abilites for an entire party is incredibly limited in an rpg
  • most importantly those games were never about: this dudes tanking tis one is healing this one is teh DPS and super interconnectivity holy triumvitare to kill kill kill. Story, characters, player agency were the foremost aspects, combat is a means to an end not the
  • the dude says how it borrows tactical decisions from those games, yet we see a super fast paced dungeon crawler, not a dude making a deep tactical decision during his/her turn
  • also plenty of games these days have this triumvitare, this is not something that is a significant connection that makes this game suddenly "like the oldschool" games, by same virtue you could say that almost every MMO on the market today is an oldschool RPG

I have no problem with this game being what it is. It might even be awesome.

But blatantly trying to apeal to the consumer by stating yo guys this is like those old school rpgs you played and liked, when the game shown in the video has almost nothing in common with those types of games is misleading and sleazy marketing.

Everyone keeps saying this, but he said it was 6 ability slots, not 6 abilities. So in a given engagement, you'll have (assumedly) autoattack+6 active abilities, but you can tune which abilities you bring in depending on what your playstyle is.

Also, I don't get the hate for the "holy trinity" when he specifically laid out that it's tank/healer/debuffer, not tank/healer/dps. Sounds like everyone can deal damage.

People are way to eager to hate this game. I think it has potential.

This looks kind of interesting. I'd really like to see more traditional'ish RPG's that WEREN'T set in the typical fantasy genre, and this one at least qualifies in that respect. I just hope the writing and the combat system are good.

@m16mojo2: Pre alpha is usually when a game is in it's preliminary phases. We'll assign senior artists / designers / developers to just sort of mess around, go nuts, just do whatever, learn as much as we can from all of it, and then from that, sort out pipeline and whatnot and start down the path to the actual alpha.

Hmmm, gameplay looks disappointing. I don't mind them trying to make combat faster paced, but they should have gone more towards Men of War (Cover / Physics / Dynamic) if they wanted to do that. This doesn't look like it commits one way or the other, and ends up looking about as tactical as Cannon Fodder or a C&C tank rush.

@m16mojo2: Alpha beta and release are just states in a product's life cycle. I really don't understand your question. A product is not in an Alpha state from day one. Alpha means most of the functionality is in place, enough to start testing on a limited scale. Pre-Alpha means the game is not yet ready for that.

I'm interested and I was 'hook-line-and-sinker' when he said X-COM and Syndicate, but then the use of saying "old-school RPG" and then saying it has the holy trinity of MMO games like tank, healer, dps/crowd control made me think otherwise. I fail to see how what is becoming a contemporary modern cliche' of the past 7ish years (holy trinity of online gaming group make-up) has anything to do with "old-school RPGs". And then after that the actual gameplay footage and scripted pitch threw me off as well. The gameplay doesn't look anything like X-COM or Balder's Gate even...it looks like, like an action-RTS with a three-man squad. Not to mention, six entire and whole abilities huh? AND across three characters? I don't know how I will manage the complexity of tactics and versatility of customizing my massive team.

Regardless, I am still going to follow and see what happens. It doesn't seem nearly as deep as they're trying to pitch it as though, AKA an old-school top-down RPG.

I agree with everyone on here. I'm just not seeing the appeal.

Maybe because it's (pre alpha code) it doesn't really exist yet? Can someone explain that to me?

I mean I know Alpha, beta, and final. What the hell is pre-alpha?

Unless this game has incredible dialogue reveal in the next video this looks just like a dungeon crawler. And considering how ofhandedly they mention that you can just replace your dead dudes, that's exactly what it sounds like.

I like the idea of having one "protagonist" that, if killed, sends me to a game over screen. But why not kill my companions? Even if they're well voiced and intriguing personalities, I can still fuck up, they can still die. I like the idea of persistent death with companion characters in these kinds of games. I just hope that this title gives me a reason to care about them in the first place.

I don't mind companion deaths either.

Which is why I mention it's the way the developer says it: "eh no bigie just get some new ones" makes them sound like generic nameless fodder to make up your group, not something with a personality.

I might be wrong, but that's what it seemd like in the video.

I agree, but they also didn't mention much of the setting or the story. All we really know at this point is that it's a dungeon crawler, and looks like a pseudo-dystopian future setting. Hell, I'm not sure if it even takes place on Earth.

I think I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now, though. It looks interesting for a diablo clone.

Been following this for a while, very happy with what they've shown so far. The premise alone is enough to make me intrigued regardless of what the gameplay turns out like. How often do you come across a post-apocalypric Sweden?

Yeah, that's right. It explains, the name, too. Krater isn't a case of "Poor Literacy is Kewl". It's the Swedish word for crater. From what I've heard, there's bound to be tons of Swedish popular culture and history baked into this game, if you can recognize it once you find it, and again, that alone makes me want to play it! I may just be biased, though.
