I don't get why everyone is going nuts about this game, is it because he flew from the ground into space seamlessly?

If so how is that different from driving from one side of the GTA5 map to the other? The graphics don't look great and the environments look a little baron so It makes It less impressive then GTA 5 imo. I get that everythings is random but what do you do in the game? It's cool you can do all that but they didn't show what you do in the game, so i'm not sure why everyone is saying this is the greatest thing.

@fargofallout: I think Jeff and Brad said they talked to the Hello Games people for around an hour and they seem pretty excited about the possibilities. People aren't saying they think it will be a great game, just that they are excited about what it could be. Why not get excited about something with wild potential instead of bland shooter/platformer #2256?

Looks like another one of those ambitious concepts that wows everyone in their own imaginations, then completely fails to deliver as an actual game.

Hype is never a good thing. If it's actually THAT good, great.

Of course, though if you can achieve a state of mind that allows you to focus that hype towards the thing that is making it, the trailers and other media release, then sometimes you can allow yourself to become excited without 1 to 1 raising your expectations for the final product. There's always bleed over and it's always going to get you interested more in that final thing, but I find I can ride that line better than I ever have before in my life. Sometimes it even makes bad things good because I can let that idea hinted at from a trailer live on in the movie or game that doesn't end up being able to deliver.

It also helps to understand that the music in most trailers has little to do with the final thing, at most it's an approximation of the tone rather than actual sounds. Sometimes it happens but most of the time it's just 'cool hype music'. I don't think experimental math rock will fit 100% of the time in this game, or most games really. Maybe some racing games or something with intense style like that xbox 360 2d band beat em up rpg kinda game released recently. This game could at most have some really rad space ambient tones with discordant guitar, but we really get no idea of what it could be from the trailer.

These days a half decent trailer can be vastly more interesting than whatever it's representing and that's mostly because it only has to sustain it's radness for about a minute or two, whereas even a film has to keep that going for at least an hour or so... and of course a game has to meet that level for way longer, making it a truly lovely experience when those very few games end up doing that for you.

What also helps dissipate over-hype is time, I don't know if info about it's state has been released but it seems likely this game won't see a release for at least a year? Possibly more. It takes a while to make games as just 4 or so people, the fact that they've made most of the content generate by itself helps to flush out the scale without work on their part for each thing but they still have to tweak and refine that base generator code to get results they want and they still need to work within that to create art that can scale in a reliable way across all those generated worlds. It's more brainy work than in the trenches content generation but it has the easy potential to still take a long time.

Aw yes, this looks amaaaaaaaaazing. Brad and Jeff weren't kidding with thei hype! Jeff promised that they'd talk about the game on this week's Bombcast (they talked to the creator(s) for about an hour last week IIRC), so this is gonna get good!

This was one of the greatest things to happen at VGX, alongside GTA V curb stomping The Last of Us for Game of the Year.

that link doesn't go anywhere. Also idgi. I guess you liked GTA V a lot more than The Last of Us? I'm not sure which of those two I like better. Both good.

Anyway this trailer looks hecka sick. Reallyl ike the name and aesthetic too. I hope it's single player.

I hope this game can deliver on some of it's promises. The art style really grabbed me. I think it really stuck the landing when GT interviewed Sean Murray. I love that he did not want to go the dystopian future way so much Sci-Fi today does. Instead he went for a more exploration phase based future. For me what really drove this home was his influences. When Murray listed the Hugo award winning Robert A Heinlein, that is when my expectations for this went up quite a bit. The 50's style Sci-Fi would explain the art style. It would also suggest a more hopeful future with a possibility of a more introspective look on the societies that occupy it. He also said first person combat on foot and in ship so I can still kill sh*t in space. So it is still a videogame. I am pretty excited to give this a shot.

Alright, I think the concept of the game is GREAT! I think I need more video to be convinced that this game is as amazing as everyone is making it out to be. Also, graphically, i think its okay, but not as incredible as some people make it out to be.

I just wonder what it is you're supposed to be doing.

When trailers are so good, and owe so much to the music, and I find out the music is not by the game's composer (which it usually isn't, I grant you), I always have to go back and wonder how much of my hype is owed to that non-game element. In this case, I was quite blown away, but going back, I think that what was shown of the game has only a little to do with it.

Beautiful looking game. But I've seen trailers for this type of explore the whole universe game before and they never seem to even come out or don't live up to the hype/promise. Maybe a miracle will happen this time but I won't hold my breath, especially with only 4 people working on such a huge game.

I mean, sure. There's potential in all the procedural stuff and going from surface to atmosphere with no loading screen, but I don't quite see how this is worthy of the internet-wide freakout that occurred yesterday. I'd like to get a sense of the mechanics and the scope of the game world first

@trilogy: @meteora3255: For sure . Tempered expectations should be a given for all things, especially things with ambition. Hoping certainly isn't the same as hyping, though. I feel bad for people who get themselves all worked up for nothing.

Looks interesting, but how many of these procedural generated planets are going to have anything interesting to do on most of them? Planets are big and people's attentions are small. I'll save my excitement for something more than a trailer of promises.

I wonder if this game is going to feature actual gun combat. For an indie studio, it seems unrealistic for them to compete with Destiny. They probably don't have the staff to do that level of combat balancing. This game might be more interesting as Star Citizen style game that's a sim exploration game.

I'm not impressed because I doubt that their promise can be realized. Maybe in 10 years a game with fully unique planets and all that fun stuff will be a reality, but not now. Devices just aren't powerful enough.
I bet this game will disappoint a lot of people.

All promise, and will deliver 20% of stated goals. Been here done that, X-Rebirth was the latest candidate. Next is Star Citizen being a total pile of trash followed by the elite remake, and now followed by no man's sky.

These are the type of games I want most, yet every new gen reincarnation has ended in utter failure, and disappointment. After my dip into Early Access titles on steam, I've been burned enough (not a single has delivered yet) to simply shy away from unknown studio X making some amazing sandbox game.

Even the standalone Day-Z version looks like utter shit considering the development time. People who modded Day-Z to Arma 3 have made more progress.

I don't know why but these sandbox games are just coming out as utter turds one after the next.
