    The Best RTS game

Im Danish so sorry if my english isn't perfect.

X-COM: Ufo Defense is the best RTS game to ever have been made in our world today. Even for It's old age it is still today capable of standing up to newer rts games. ''Gameplay'' wise that is.

    Gameplay:
Everything from managing your soldiers, equipping your planes with weapons if its a fighter, or with weapons and gear for your troops to use if its a transport vessel, or building your base and buying the stuff needed for research and manufaction( which you also get from doing missions because of alien technology ). it just never gets old. On the World map you have an overview of everything from ufo's, bases, and even financial statistics, and if ur ever overwhelmed by something, you simply slow down time, or if you are in a hurry speed it up. Just be carefull that if you speed it up, that you dont miss to many ufo's, but to be honest not even that is a big problem, cause the game tells you everytime a new one shows up, and have a little button that says something like this : Allright slow down time. Your own personal panic button
Hunting down ufo's with your intercepters is good fun aswell, cause you have to assing orders to how they should engage. Go in close with full weaponry, and risk to be hit, or go at their weapons range limit for more security, or simply follow it and hope it lands, and even more. Ufo's comes in 5 classes. Very small, Small, Medium, Large and Very large. And each of those have thier own range on guns, and Speed.
Now Ufo's can land, be shot down, drop aliens to terror cities and build bases. And each of that gives you a mission to do. Now this is the fun part, Controlling your troops to kill aliens. Everytime you start a mission ( which is done by flying to it with the transport vessel. Now im sorry i forgot that name for it!! ) you are welcomes by a inventory screen with all the soldiers to go through, and equip. This basicly just goes down to fit big guns and ammo sadly, but its there, and having a squadron of people you can equip the stuff you want on, gives it a plus. Then you click start, and wham your ready to go kick ass. Though if you are unlucky to meat some of the big aliens at a point where you havent researched enough, you might have to retreat, cause Loosing troops will happen. Alot. And thats another reason to like this game. If you are like me, and likes to be challanged by rts games. This is just for you. Hard is not just hard, its gonna sterilize you if you dont do it right. And if you constantly loose fights, the goverment wont like you, and the monthly income will fall. Combat is simple, you have to hands, left and right, and can fit a weapon in each, its all turn based, using actionpoints, and each action has a cost. No matter what. Left click moves stuff, right click makes the person turn the way your mouse is pointing, usefull because soldiers can see whats behind them. then you have all sorts of buttons in the buttom middel, Kneel, inventory ect. ect. and it all works really well, and once all soldiers have been moved, and you are done, you click.. well done. then the aliens, and civilians move. And dont shoot civilians!, and Dont destroy to much of a Ufo! cause you need it for research. And can you catch live aliens, that gives you the ability to research them to find out what makes them ''tick'' and learn to kill them better.
I could keep on going but all in all the gameplay of this game is Incridible deep and fun. You can easily spend hours on this game. and you really should. It's sad to see that the new Ufo games havent been able to hit the same gameplay as this old gem.

    Gameplay 10/10

    Audio:
''Bah its an old game, the sound effects and music in this game is most likely so bad that i might have to play it without'' you might say. Well be my guest and hammer your face onto your desk for awhile. No this game actually have some awesome sounds in it. And good music aswell. Its a huge factor of the atmosfere in the game. I remember when i was a little boy watching my big brother playing it, the sounds fucking scared the shit outta me, and tbh it still can. Yes fine call me a wuss, thats my problem. but every Alien have thier own ''voice'' or what ever they use when they die. And so does each weapon. Music is different, Little silence on worldmap, Nice tunage when engaging ufo's, Mission start music ( is different for Ufo landings/crash and Terror missions ), and ingame action moving strategy gameplay is silent like heart beat music sound thing thats really tense.
The music is good and fits well into the game, and sound effect are also great and gives guns and humans/aliens some life. But it could have been done better because the human/alian sounds are repeated each time they die, but then again, you cant get everything.

    Audio 9/10

    Graphics:
Well, its of course completely outdated here, duh. The game uses VGA graphics, and it uses it quite well. it all looks good, if it is a alien, it looks like one, is it a man it looks like, well depends what armor you have..
Not much to say here but that its has a nice touch in graphics, not anywhere near something today, but its retro, and its all good

    Graphics 9/10

Now go get Dosbox and try the game! im one of the lucky ones, who has the very original bought in the good old days.

One of the best games ever made 0

I don't toss that around lightly. XCOM UFO Defense was, and still is in my eyes, one of the most engrossing real time simulation/tactical turn based strategy games ever made. It has yet to find an equal, which means going back and playing the original game, unmodified, is actually not that painful an experience. Going to anything beyond the original, well, your mileage may vary, but I'm not here to talk about the many terrible games that XCOM spawned, but instead the beautiful synergy of the ori...
