Halo Franchise or Gears of War Franchise - whose more valuable?

#1 Posted by MAV3R1CK (125 posts) -

topic^ Both franchises have helped MS in big ways and helped Microsoft shape what it is today as a gaming console company. You can say that these two are equal value but in your opinion, who is more valuable and why?

I say Halo because it was the very first franchise that MS helped become what it is today.

I agree Halo pretty much made the Xbox what it is today.

#3 Posted by DorianBlack (311 posts) -

I'm sure 10 years from now Halo will be remembered more but at the moment I think Gears of War is more relevant.

#4 Posted by Nobility (295 posts) -

Halo hands down, Gears will never be as popular since Halo had a jump start and larger community.  Look at how many people send fanfiction, photos affecting their lives and even composing their own music for the universe.  Though they are both powerful weapons in Microsoft arsenal.

#5 Posted by 1800_Hero (1 posts) -

Both Halo and Gears of War  both have great storylines but Halo can be expanded to different planets and universes. Which opens up the realm to many twist and tails of Master Chief.

#6 Posted by Shadz (198 posts) -

Halo for sure.  Halo 1 was just too damn good.

#7 Posted by MarkMarini (27 posts) -

I think Halo is more powerful and MS knows it since they decided against showing the new project at E3. They probably thought it would have overshadowed Gears 2 which is gunning to be their major system seller this holiday.

Gears of war later on

Gears of war later on

halo was needed to birth the mad brain child that is gow

#11 Posted by Grilledcheez (3942 posts) -

I just don't see Gears ever having the same power (moving consoles, creating hype) that Halo has.

#12 Posted by MrAnderson588 (16 posts) -

Halo is the biggest franchise on the xbox.

#13 Posted by Kane (317 posts) -

Gears is newer so probably gears, halo is kinda old and loosing its popularity

#14 Posted by TheSnakeOfWar (72 posts) -

Halo is the importent franchise right now but seeing as how they finished the fight and everybody is playing Cod 4 instead of halo. Gears could become the face of the 360 while the chief is floating around in space.

#15 Posted by Scent_Tree (31 posts) -

Halo is the most important franchise for Microsoft, its the biggest cash cow.

#16 Posted by OblivionGuy07 (161 posts) -

Halo was the popular franchise, but now Gears is where it's at

#17 Posted by coakroach (2486 posts) -

I saw Halo on the news once
Gears hasnt topped that yet

#18 Posted by Malakhii (1443 posts) -

Definitely halo, but if gears were to become a good movie, things might change.

#19 Posted by FusionJones (13 posts) -

I don't really think someone can make a strong argument in favor of Gears.

Master Chief, to most, is a more interesting character.   Halo has moved consoles for Microsoft since day one.  Halo pushed console shooters ahead, revolutionizing the genres health system, controls and multiplayer.  Halo, although still a shooter, is much less violent and can still be played in front of pre-teens without causing much controversy.  Halo has proved itself and has the depth to continue going somewhere.  Gears doesn't have that.
#20 Posted by smis (31 posts) -

I believe that Halo is by far the more valuable franchise with so much potential to expand the universe and all they've done with putting out books and comics.  There is so much more to see with Halo, possibly rivaling Star Wars one day.

It's losing popularity?  The single biggest day in entertainment history is considered "losing popularity"?
Hmm...
#22 Posted by WorldsFastestShrimpPeeler (458 posts) -

Agreed, Halo franchise was more valuable.

#23 Posted by xplodedd (1316 posts) -

halo was more valuable, but right now its gears.

#24 Posted by Termite (2398 posts) -

Halo did more for the Xbox than Gears by far

#25 Posted by Monty_The_Great (178 posts) -

Stop it. This isn't even close. I love me some Gears, but please don't try to compare it to entity that is Halo. Halo did so much for console gaming, its really indescribable. Halo is solely responsible  for making online and/or multiplayer popular on a console. IMO Gears wouldn't be around if not for Halo.

There are three Halo game that have been released which have all sold extreamly well. There has been one Gears of War game that has come out so far, it sold very well but not as well as Halo 3.

#27 Posted by RoslindaleOne (26 posts) -

Halo. It's story is much deeper than Gears at the moment. That might change when Gears 2 comes out.

#28 Posted by MAV3R1CK (125 posts) -

Halo 3 posted the single most successful day in entertainment history.

#29 Posted by Sentry (4197 posts) -

Halo, of course. Why do you think there are Halo books? A Halo movie eventually, Halo RTS, Halo 4 (just wait and see), and another Halo project from whats his face... Halo is the most valuable money milking machine to Microsoft when it comes to gaming.,\

#30 Posted by Dovey (161 posts) -

They are both such pivitol franchise for completely different reasons and the products that are coming out under these franchise are always polished and always do very well.

Do you think fable 2 will establish fable itself as a franchise to be another of the more important ones?

#31 Posted by CryingHero (62 posts) -
Halo: Combat Evolved 5 million dollars, Halo 2 worth around 8 million dollars, and Halo 3 is worth 8.1 million dollars in game sales and Gears 4.7 Million Dollars so I'd have to say it's Halo on game sales alone takes the cake. Gears is popular but it's nothing compared to Halo.
#32 Posted by GumbieuK (120 posts) -

HALO without a shadow of doubt.

#33 Posted by LightYagami245 (1117 posts) -

Apparently Gears since they allowed Bungie to go on their own. Even if they gave the Halo franchize to another dev under them, it wouldn't be the same. if they cared about Halo so much, they would of tried to make Bungie stay.

#34 Posted by Shawn (3825 posts) -

Gears franchise because there's still 2 more games to be released (that we know of).

And a comic and novel series to be published.

Halo no doubt.  But gears is a great series to.  They will both get pimped way to much over the coming years. If they haven't already.

No fable is just missing that "something" that makes a game a mega hit. Enjoyed the first one. Prob will enjoy the second. But that is it.

Halo 3's release changed the way video games were looked at. People camped out for days to get the game and it showed people's dedication to gaming. I think that down the road, it will be more memorable but we still need to see how Gears 2 turns out and maybe even Gears 3 before we can know for sure.

But honestly, would you attribute thee game 'changing th way people look at video games' to the sheer quality of the title, or the massive advertising and shoving it in peoples faces everywhere? not that Halo 3 wasn't an awesome game, but it would not have had such a big impact on the way people look at gaming, if it weren't for the incredible advert campaign MS had for it.. as for massive lines and whatnot, that has been seen before, the real change was the way people LOOKED at the massive line, and since they have seen the game everywhere, be it TV, internet ads, on their burgerking bags, etc, the way they view the game was now "wow this is a really good game" without even seeing or playing it. So hats off to MS for that. XD

GoW. While Halo was valuable, GoW will be more valuable.

#40 Posted by tec3297 (1170 posts) -

Halo, Halo, Halo.  It's been around longer and it helped launch the original Xbox system.

#41 Posted by LuffyUzumaki (453 posts) -

gow, halo just feels a little kidish

#42 Posted by Player1 (3850 posts) -

Halo for sure. Even Halo 2 was system seller for the 360.

Gears of war is a great game. But it was in no way a system seller for most because most people hadn't even heard of it before they bough their xbox.
#43 Posted by AnTiPRO (93 posts) -

Halo by far...look at the books, CD's, and the shear size of the community. The Halo community blows every other game community out of the water.

#44 Posted by NateDogg (465 posts) -

Both are huge franchises and also console sellers.  Halo has been around longer so I feel that the fanbase is generally bigger for that game.  Gears is releasing their game this year so maybe that can change.   I also have a feeling on a possible Halo 4 in the works... Just a feeling!

Halo is much more valuable, it has more mainstream appeal.
