The Redesigned Xbox Will Never Red Ring

If the new redesigned Xbox 360 has the kind of penetration that Microsoft surely wants it to have, then I'll have to ditch the Red Ring of Death jokes. On top of being 17-percent smaller and 92.2-percent more attractive, the 360 "S" lacks the hardware's signature and ominous crimson halo of light. This new console's circle of light, which wraps around the power indicator, merely spits out green.  In times of failure, though, the power indicator turns red.

This information stems from an info sheet (below) that Joystiq has obtained, which also reveals that the "S" console will have Kensington Locks, capacitive touch support, and will weigh a tad bit less than its 3.5 kg brothers.

This is half the image, by the way.
I won't miss the Red Ring of Death. After seeing it ten times across several different consoles, I've had my fill. But it'll be weird when my redesigned 360 starts flashing green--provided that these new consoles are as prone to failure as my others. It's too pretty to suck, right?

UPDATE: Looks like the info sheet is misleading. Kotaku reports, in an update, that the power indicator, (which is the little light in the middle of the circle) turns red when the console fails. Red Ring of Death is still toast though. Oh, how I'll miss thee.

My pre-owned console has done pretty well so far.  I was going to get a PS3 but now I might just get another sex box.

It will just straight up explode now.

Since they added in the WiFI, they had to take out another $100 feature.

#6 Posted by apertura (196 posts) -

GROD just isn't the same.

Brad, the Xbox 360 Slim are supposedly more reliable than the other older 360s. This is judging by the increased ventilation and the implementation of the "Valhalla" motherboard. The predecessor "Jasper" has already gotten rid of most of the RROD issues, so Valhalla will most likely cease RRODs from every becoming a plague of a problem.

Wait, Kensington? You mean KenSingTon, the guys behind the Vii? I think we have a new joke.

People are going to scream bloody murder the first time we get a confirmed report of system failing.

#10 Posted by snide (2394 posts) -

Surprisingly my launch X360 never red-ringed. My PS3 died after about 6 months though.

#11 Posted by Vorbis (2748 posts) -

GROD works too.

#13 Posted by zudthespud (3277 posts) -

I've had a 360 since late 2006 and it never red ringed. Other stuff on it broke, twice, but it hasn't gone wrong for nearly 3 years.

#14 Posted by dvorak (1495 posts) -

The best part of that report is that the color white simply won't do for Microsoft. We all had Chill 360s.

#15 Posted by trophyhunter (5804 posts) -

so it will still brake but it just won't turn red?

#16 Posted by sahest (29 posts) -

Still going strong on my first 360. Of course, now I have cursed it by posting this...

Now it has the Black Tint Sheen of Dust!

How to get rid of the red ring of death, make a Xbox that can't flash red.

#19 Posted by Meteora (5787 posts) -
@trophyhunter: Yep.

@Abyssfull: Its also a awfully good fingerprint magnet.

The new 360s are going to FLOG to death!

#24 Posted by EnterpriseE (69 posts) -

But from what I understand that it won't have the red lights like previous console but display a different error.  So they haven't fix the Red Ring of Death. I think i am going to wait for it to be out on the market before I decide to trade my old one in.

They didnt put red lights in the new Xbox?
Edit: I was joking but they really didnt put red lights in it.

#29 Posted by Jazz (2046 posts) -

Now thats one way to get around the RROD
Got to give them credit for that..its almost something a marketing exec would come up with.

GROD.

My first gen. 360 died on me last week, so i guessssss i can say it was perfect timing... although i would rather not have to spend another $300 on a new console. i will say however, the 250G hard drive will be a NICE upgrade from the original 20G i am still using.

#34 Posted by garnsr (94 posts) -

The yellow light on my PS3 when it died was odd, it wasn't clear what yellow meant.  At least lots of red lets you know it's probably not a good thing.

#35 Posted by DukeTogo (1505 posts) -

My launch unit is a ticking time bomb.  it's been sent back twice, is noisy as Hell, and the lack of space on the meager 20 gb hdd makes installing games pretty much impossible if you own any DLC.  Since I didn't want to drop any cash on an overpriced HDD for a system that might blow up again, the small HDD had to do.  At least I was able to finally start using USB drives to install games and still be able to actually keep a few XBLA games on the HDD.  I have a 64 mb memory unit as well, just to store my profile and game saves, again to spare some space on the HDD.  So I will be visiting my local Gamestapo to unload my 360 for a new model.

As for no red ring on the unit, I'm pretty sure that was at the top of the list when they designed it, anything to distance themselves from that mess.  I'll miss the "chill" design of the old one, it had a nostalgic feel that systems like the SNES had.  But new consoles need to be like exotic cars these days, all slick and curved.

And dude, "Chill" was the name of that color?  That's some J Allard douchebaggery right there.

Can someone explain to me what the advantages of a capacitive power button is?
To me it just seems like one more source of potential hardware-problems and smudgy finger marks.

Nice so instead of a red ring, just ignore the problem.

#40 Posted by Raven_Sword (3383 posts) -

Honestly, its not THAT pretty. I hate that sharp inhale it has. Anyway, I heard it still uses to faulty Xclamp design, so it still might break quite a bit.

"i wonder if they're using this to get around the 3 year warrantee thing that they were forced to do for the RROD.  you'd think this console would be better ventilated with the sides and top/bottom slots.. "

IIRC, this one only comes with a one year warranty.

#42 Posted by ajamafalous (11591 posts) -

Lol @ all the shit-talkers.

My launch 360 has never had a single problem. That being said, I'm trading it in for this new model once my Gamestop gets more in stock.

#43 Posted by Carlos1408 (1462 posts) -

I thought it would flash red. i remember on the video GB posted; the undercover new Xbox unboxing one, that PR guy said it would flash red if there was an error like that. Hmmm... Hopefully they just won't die on people, my first generation one which I still have has died 3 times on me. I also desperately need a bigger hard drive. 20gb just ain't enough dudududdududer!!!!

#44 Posted by Waffles13 (580 posts) -

New Brad, did you watch the GB unboxing video? Some European guy asked about twelve times what happens when it fails, and they said the green power icon does turn red.

Not a Red Ring, mind you but red nonetheless.

Let's see what the failure rating looks like in the winter.

#46 Posted by Crispy (202 posts) -

Actually... pretty tempted to get a 360 now (after holding off for this long).

#47 Posted by killawogg (222 posts) -

dont know if i will get one of these right away i might wait til kinect releases so i can use the dedicated port for it.

#48 Posted by john_s28 (8 posts) -

Removing the red leds is one way to fix the the red ring of death. Seriously though now may be the time to replace barely working launch 360 (college dorms can be rough on consoles).

#49 Posted by Tiger_Buttercup (252 posts) -

I wish they replaced the red rings with a middle finger

#50 Posted by Kaddion (141 posts) -

Damn you Microsoft for making a pretty new console even though my current 360 is doing extremely well!
