10 minutes in and this is already golden. This is an awful game I had no idea even existed until now.

If somebody did speedruns of that DOS version of Mega Man 2, somebody sure as shit speedran this version of SMB.

EDIT: The music sounds like somebody who lost their memory, was told to play the music to the game and is rememering it note by note and is composing it in real time.

I wonder how many lives 5C lives is.

@tietuesday: My favourite part is how the timer ticks down at a variable rate, but that's a strong 2nd. I'd like to imagine this is the canonical home of Tall Mario.

@grondoth: 5x16 + "C"(12)x1 = 80 + 12 = 92. Why in the world you would display any player-facing numbers in hex is beyond me.

It’s wild that someone’s first exposure to Super Mario might have been this.

This game seems not quite as good as Mega Man 3 DOS, recently demonstrated at AGDQ by the uncontrollable Lizstar. That's a shame, some of these ports really set a high bar.

This video is also further evidence that Party of One is rad, even if it is something Jeff already routinely did but rebranded. I guess Party of One is if anything a generalization of Jeff's longtime antics.

The cover art rotating in the corner is distracting in such a weird way. I just saw the cover of 2012 Psychic Force and it sparked this quivering memory in my brain and had to look it up to see gameplay and barely recall that yes, I think I rented this game for the Dreamcast as some point and played it a lot at that time.

Mario Party Of One

I enjoyed watching Jeff's descent in to madness.

More games need constant full-second blackouts where you get to wonder whether you're irreversibly fucked.

Breaking Breff. That's stupid, why did I type that?

Also, breaking Mario down into single screen challenges was a big thing in Maker 2. Didn't know there was precedence for that sort of design.

And also, Jeff should get more credit for his facial expressions. Dude's like Alexa Bliss level out there.

I lasted about 40 mins until the music made me turn it off

There is absolutely nothing special about this, jeff deserves a refund!

Edit: took me way too long to realize the madness that is not having a scrolling level. Fuck all that.

The way the music is ~~just a little off~~ is honestly making me feel a little nauseous. Game rules 10/10

There are, unbelievably, other versions of this game: one for the Sharp X1, and an NES fan recreation. Run Button took a look at them in one of my favorite LP videos ever. The part where the fire flower turns Mario into Luigi just cracks me up.

Now knowing just what Hudson has been up to these last decades.. the amount of raw human suffering, as Brad put it, that they somehow distill into videogame form is art of the greatest caliber. I commend Hudson and Nintendo for seeing how their seemingly 'harmless' games could nearly break the minds of men decades later... great work. Just outstanding, thanks for this info, Jeff. I didnt realize just how long this twisted trick has been underway.

Applause for nintendo and hudson for their foresight! they were truly pioneers and i finally see that now.

I read Masters of Doom and I still don't understand why it was so hard to get smooth scrolling on the PC

I thought this was some rom hack. I can't believe this is a real thing.

They should of taken a bit of that extra speed from Mario and used it to increase the BGM tempo, what the fuck man.

If you play the video at 1.25x speed on Youtube it's about right.

Every little movement betrays what I expect from Super Mario Bros. and it makes just watching every action anxiety provoking. THATS NOT HOW MARIO MARIOS.

This is what Giant Bomb is supposed to be.

Holy shit, some of those deaths actually made my stomach hurt from laughter. This game is an atrocity. That death toward the end where Jeff blindly jumped into nothing but the great beyond tied things up nicely.

This is 100% a nightmare I have had before.
