New Burnout Game Revealed By Ratings Board?

The Australian Classification Review Board outs something called Burnout Crash.

In case you were worried, Burnout isn’t dead. IP owner and publisher of the franchise, EA, has been keen on teasing this fact in the past, but now a smidgen of evidence has emerged to support the existence of a new game in the franchise. The Australian Classification Review Board, a service similar to the US’ ESRB, has rated a brand new Burnout title dubbed “Burnout Crash,” a PG-rated joint set to be published by EA.

And, well, that’s all we know for sure at moment. As for speculation, though, there’s a lot of that out there. On the developer front, it’s been suggested in the past that Criterion, now fresh off the release of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, could be resuming its work on the Burnout series with this new title. Criterion is of course the studio behind all the Burnout games, and did an especially good job with the last iteration, Burnout Paradise. And while you’d figure that Criterion would just be slated to work on the next NFS title considering the praise Hot Pursuit has received, it's been strongly suggested by EA’s Partrick Soderlund that Black Box is the next in line to give the NFS series a spin.

== TEASER ==As for what “Crash” actually is, there’s also some good speculation based on its name. Crash mode, a Burnout fan favorite that had users demolishing as much stuff as possible in exchange for points, was omitted from Paradise. Plenty of users made it clear that they wanted the mode in Paradise, so “Crash” might be an olive branch to those of you who really miss banging up your expensive fancy racing cars. And if the name implies the scale, we could be looking at a purely downloadable game. On the other hand, “Crash” could just be a safe subtitle that speaks to what the game does best, and still describes a full retail release. Speculation!

Really, though, we’ll just have to wait and see. A minor note in all of this, but it looks like “Crash” is headed to the PS3 and 360. A LinkedIn profile indicated that these were the target platforms of the game, according to a GamerBytes post. Shocker!

Well, since I'm not going to get first anyways.... I don't have such a good feeling about this. "Crash" seems like such an obvious and unneccessary subtitle that I predict one of two outcomes. 1) It's bad. 2) It's a free-to-play and/or kiddified version of Burnout (Read: bad).

@Kyle:  I hope you're right. I was so disappointed when they took Crash Mode out of later Burnouts.

Crash mode in Burnout was fun; but not looking forward for it to be a stand alone game.

Besides, even if I loved Burnout Paradise, I found it to be a good 'good-bye' game which sent the franchise off on a positive note. I'd rather remember all the fun I had with Burnout up-to, and including, Burnout Paradise than to remember how EA started to cash in on the franchise by letting sub-par developers make iPhone games of it.

Also; Need For Speed: Burnout would be great. :)

I thought some new information had been added, but no. Just a late post that adds nothing.

Does GB even need a news section? Sure if was up to date/had a personality then it would be deserving, but it isn't/doesn't.

Are you just going to add an insult to this comment every day until someone tells you to stop? If you want change, take it to the PMs and take some responsibility for it.

FYI - Crash made was not removed from Burnout Paradise. It was essentially renamed "Showtime" since it played a little bit differently. Pretty much the same thing though. A skilled player could be in Showtime for a VERY long time.

Well, if the game has been rated, is must be a good ways along in development, so we shouldn't have to wait too long for more details.

@MooseyMcMan: I wouldn't neccessarily expect too much if I were you. As I understand it, the ESRB will sometimes rate a game before it's playable, so long as they are told what will be in it, and the Australian board may be similar.

@ShaggyChu: However, since Showtime was triggered dynamically, it didn't have the ridiculous track setups and pass-the-controller competition like proper Crash mode. Those are what I remember most about previous Burnout games, a sentiment I've heard repeated in the games media.

More Burnout is always a good thing, but I don't know if they could have come up with a lazier subtitle.

Wasn't this the sort of stories that they wanted to avoid early on? It's just repeating the same things I already heard about days ago on these very forums.

I disagree. It's such a simple and straight forward title of what the best part of the series is, it's almost strange they didn't use it before. Dominator, Revenge, and Takedown were worse names.

I prefer the older Burnout games to Paradise, so hopefully this'll be an arcadey one. But any new Burnout content is good news to me.

You know, if they'd pushed Paradise any more they almost could have made it an MMO...

If this means they're bringing crash mode back, then sold. Paradise was good and all, but Showtime was a poor substitute for proper crash mode.

I love Burnout Paradise--it's one of my favorite racing games.  That being said, Criterion has basically told PC gamers to fuck off.  Therefore, I will never buy another Criterion game or a game in the Burnout genre.  It's a shame too, because it was an extremely well polished game (Burnout Paradise) when it arrived on PC, not like most other games that show up on the consoles first and get ported over with very minor or no changes.

@GreggD: Arcadey in the sense that you could play Burnout Revenge at an arcade. Pick a track and go. Paradise is a big-ass open world game.

I've been a huge fan of the burnout series for some time now, really glad to see that we'll (likely) be getting another one in the near future.  That's not to say I didn't like they way Criterion handled NFS, I could have definitely gotten behind the Need For Speed series if it had become their new thing.

That being said, I'm curious if they'll do another open world burnout game or not, they made a few interesting decisions with Paradise (crash mode being "absent" was about my only issue), I'd definitely like to see that experience refined, perhaps with a bit more focus on, well, focusing the races.  Not sure I can speak for anyone else, but it often became a tad bit difficult to determine the correct path at time (even with the visual aid of a blinker and street sign.). Also, I found that races tended to end up feeling a bit lonesome as I seldom would stay in the pack of other racers very long before blazing my own trail, or just outpacing them altogether.

(Who else wants DJ Atomica to return? Loved him in SSX, Loved him in Burnout)

EDIT: Considering the name, I'd REALLY love to see an open world burnout game with a dedicated crash event mode ala a Tony Hawk game. Start the event, and a predetermined course appears.

I don't think they'd call a big huge Burnout game "Burnout Crash". That sounds like a handheld or something.

Please God no more Burnout. That series is dead. Criterion is too talented to waste its energies on something so played out. I'd like to see them develop a new F-Zero game. That would be dope.

I really like all this talk of a new Burnout game, but not so much of it perhaps being a downloadable title. I want a fully fledged game that will take all my time and ruin the friendships that I have.

Burnout would've been just fine. But they had to add "cops and robbers"
