Street Fighter and Tekken Fit Better Than You Might Think

Disparate fighting systems come together in an interesting way as Kazuya comes to town.

No Caption Provided
Cramming Tekken fighters into a Capcom-made Street Fighter game sounds like a tall order, but the developer seems to be doing really well so far with Street Fighter X Tekken. I was able to spend a chunk of time last week messing around with the game's first ten characters, and it feels like it'll be a really interesting addition to Capcom's fighting roster when it's released next year.

The game starts with Street Fighter IV as a core. It's the same engine and, visually, the game definitely looks similar. And the Street Fighter characters don't initially seem that different than their Street Fighter IV incarnations until you leave the ground. The jumping feels different. It's perhaps a bit more floaty, which makes sense considering how juggle-focused the game is. While the juggling doesn't make the game feel identical to Namco's Tekken games, it opens up a lot of wild combo potential that doesn't make its way into more-traditional Capcom fighters.

The systems in the game feel partially built around combo potential. SFXT is a tag game, so you'll pick two characters before each fight and you can tag between them by hitting both medium attacks at the same time. Though this is a free action, if you press the tag buttons mid-combo or when you're on the ground, you can cancel into a tag at the expense of some meter. There is also a launcher, which all characters can perform by hitting both heavy attacks at the same time. This isn't a Marvel vs. Capcom launcher that you can chase up into the sky for air combos (or, at least, I wasn't able to reliably do that). It's more for setting up additional juggles via standing punches, additional specials, or even your super. Supers require two of your meter's three bars to perform, allowing you to tag cancel into your partner's super, if you so desire. The whole system feels a little freeform, like it would allow players to get more creative with their combos.

The game also gives each character a move than can be held and charged. Take Guile's sonic boom, for example. He'll start the animation and then hold, finishing the move when you release the punch button. If you hold it long enough, the move will charge up into an EX sonic boom, and if you keep holding, he'll eventually bust out his super art, sonic hurricane. Still, it's hard to say for sure how the fighting system will pan out, as it's apparently still early. Some of the characters in the version being shown felt more complete than others.

The Tekken side doesn't seem to be getting the short end of the stick, though I had trouble getting past projectiles with some of them. While the Tekken fighters have been updated to use six buttons instead of four, and their jumps aren't crazy slow as they are in the Tekken series, they still feel enough like their former selves to do some sort of justice to the Tekken lineage. Part of this is accomplished by having the light and medium attacks sort of map to the four buttons in the Tekken fighting system. This means that some of the basic combos--like Kazuya's 1, 1, 2--are still possible. He also has his rising uppercut, and the way you do the move still requires you to bring the stick back to a neutral position. It doesn't just come out the same way Ryu's shoryuken does. I thought that was a nice touch.

The videos give a better look at the sort of combo-oriented chicanery you'll be able to get up to when the game is released in 2012. Here's a look at what the Tekken guys are capable of.

" I dunno Jeff, I see no Tekken mechanics in there at all.  This is Tekken purely in terms of roster. "

The point of the game is to offensive and have Tekken-like juggles, and the tag system is akin to TTT. They're putting realistic amounts of Tekken into it. Plus Tekken characters moves or something focus on 4 buttons or something, they haven't been specific on it.
Anyway, if the inputs aren't fucked like in SFIV, and they have a nice Blanka-less roster, I'm totally down. Loving it all so far.

I wasn't that hyped for this game... until King came out and my mind suddenly drowned in it's own nostalgic. Can't wait. Of course, that first trailer where the crowd cheered like crazy... good times.

The jumping is even more floaty in SvT?! Well that sucks because the jumping in SFIV is already way too floaty. Meh.

The embedded movie makes it look like SSFIV with Tekken invited to play ;) I'm happy to see this.

Jeez, GB users hating on the Tekken. I think most of the people hating on Tekken haven't played 5 DR which is a shame... or there are just a ton of Capcon fans here.  I'm in all the way on this one though!

This game is looking great so far, even if it looks like Capcom mikling out the SF4 engine a tiny bit.
The Tekken characters seem pretty well integrated here.

This game's intro movie needs to have the Akuma vs. Gouken fight in the volcano. Then just as Akuma is about to finish off Gouken, Kazuya's body lands on Akuma giving Gouken a chance to escape in the confusion. Akuma is, of course, pissed.

" " The whole system feels a little freeform, like it would allow players to get more creative with their combos. " -- that's the antithesis of most Tekken games. Heck, until 5/Dark Resurrection, they've been relying on preset, locked-in animations and their patented "Dial-a-combos" 100%. This is Capcom after all - none of their fighters have ever had sh**ty, locked-down dial-a-combos like in the 3D Mortal Kombats or Tekkens. Btw, how weird is it that Soul Calibur never suffered from this, and it's also made by Namco? "
Since when have you been locked in preset animations for combos in Tekken? Unless you are talking about the one who is being attacked, who is indeed "locked" until he lands back on the ground, you have always been free to do whatever you want in a juggle. How else would you do resets, tech traps and just setups in general? Please don't tell me you are referring to the 10-hit combos, they are absolutely worthless in anything beyond casual play.

Also: MvC3, made by Capcom. That game has longer and more damaging juggles than Tekken.

That's actually Namco's game. They're different games. That one will probably use Tekken's fighting engine. From the bit of concept art that's been released, it looks like the art style is very Tekken as well.

This looks too much like Samurai Showdown right now...which for some isnt a bad thing, but I haven't been a fan of that look for a long time.  Hopefully it gets more polished as release draws near.  Still gonna by it either way...lol

Im actually pretty excited for this game.

I went into MvsC3  really trying to like it, but I couldnt get into it, even when I learned alot of the basic combos.  I just didnt like it..  The buttons, the set up..  I wanted a game that was definitely more combo-centric than SF4 but I think MvsC3 was just to crazy for me.. This really looks like something that fits perfectly in the middle of those to games, and something I can really enjoy without having to rewire how I play SF.

Right, I read Dark's comment to mean the next game like this.  I understand Tekken X Street Fighter is from the Namco side, but to the majority of people out there, it'll be the "next" game, despite design differences.

I think he was making light of Capcom's recent tendency to re-release their games with seemingly minor changes and improvements. Tekken X Street Fighter does not seem to fit that bill.

@bretthancock:  From a financial statement, it makes more sense for them to come out seperately at different times. I doubt anyone is going to buy two similarly titled fighting games at the same time, but if they were released separately....than maybe?

Tekken used to be a somewhat big deal to me and my friends here in Norway.
There was even little tournaments around for Tekken Tag,
but it all kinda died off after Tekken 4 - I've been wanting to like the series
but it's grown ever so distant since the first few releases.
This looks and sounds promising though!

I'll probably end up getting the game, but I'm not impressed with anything I've seen so far. The appeal of this game to me will depend on lot on it's fighting system, if it's a slight tweak over what we've seen so far, I'll be happy to pass, I fucking hate Tekken.

I think this game will be pretty awesome, but since I like SF way better, I'm more interested to see what Namco does with their game. This game does look good though.
