Why is everyone overreacting to a simple question? He stated it, then backed it up with pictures. He's not condemning the people who post it, he is just saying he'd prefer it if the extra fan pictures weren't there. Alot of you people need to get off your high horse and quit defending it like its last piece of freedom on earth. You don't need every little thing as an excuse to tell people off and belittle them.
Seriously, what's the deal with voyeuristic fan art in the wiki?
I think fan art should be allowed. I just think that there should be a mechanism in place in order to filter images of... sub par quality and/or class. Our community cannot mature as long as we entertain the worst parts of it.
Having standards doesn't make someone a prude, seriously.
If it makes you feel better, attractive women have pages with a ridiculous amount of modeling pictures.

I'm not sure all fan art should go as long as it is in good taste. Which even the rules specify; the rules aren't being followed.
I think if it isn't official information about said character/game/theme, it should not be in the wiki. Shit gets confusing.
Honestly, I think the real problem is that there are far too many extraneous pictures in the wiki...I think some people really like to upload anything and everything they can find that relates to a particular game/character/concept/whatever.
" We're no Anime Vice, but I agree that all fan art should be abolished from our wiki pages. Really, they serve no purpose. "I agree, it's kinda stupid and has nothing to do with video games. Durn anime kids cloggin' the internet pipes. I want screenshots and concept art, dammit. If I want tits I got entire other websites devoted to that.
I don't see anything wrong with it, especially considering some of the art you would consider voyeuristic is actual official art...
I think fan art should be submitted to a panel of judges first to determine if it's high quality, or at least decent enough to get on here. Otherwise it'll just be a buildup of things like that.
It is kinda weird how much bad/creepy DeviantArt stuff has infiltrated the wiki. You don't have to go very far into the image gallery of any given popular female character to find some suggestive, usually poorly drawn images.
" I don't see why it can't just automatically default to real art, and make fan art an option or somethin (I have no idea about anything, so excuse me if I'm wrong) "Images submitted to individual game pages are put into the game's generic overall gallery. Specific galleries can be created by users and generally are limited to categories such as screenshots, concept art, promotional art, and fan art.
" From the site FAQ:Yes, but in that same rule set it says that pornographic images that are NOT official game art are prohibited, therefore, pornographic fan art should be disallowed.Fan art is explicitly called out as acceptable. Some of the stuff on the site is really pushing it though. Also, I demand a fight between Killjoi and Newten. Two mods enter, one mod leaves! "Image upload best practices
Do not submit images with watermarks! Submit high rez images under 1 meg in size whenever possible.
- Images can include box art, screenshots, concept art, fan art, and more. When uploading images, we strongly encourage users to either associate their images with an appropriate gallery, or create a new gallery when necessary.
- Avoid adding images tagged or watermarked with other sites' URLs.
- Nudity is not allowed in the message boards. Hentai or nude images are only allowed in the wiki or the wiki's gallery IF it is official art from the publisher ( So no hentai fan art in the wiki or wiki galleries ). Hentai, unofficial art and unofficial hentai are allowed on profile image galleries.
I like a lot of fan art. I don't care much for naked Lolis, but if it's well crafted fan art, then I'm all for it. It's a part of the games community, and I think it's important to recognize fan art. It's not crudely drawn or anything, so just don't look at it.
Clearly pornographic fan art is obviously not allowed. The problem seems to be with some people's definition of "pornographic". For example, the second picture in the OP. While mature in nature, I would not call it pornographic. If there were clearly visible naughty-bits and/or they were involved in a sexual act, that would be different. Also, not all fan art is bad or pornographic. Take these two from the Persona 4 fan art gallery for example. Hell, the second one almost looks official.
Exhibit 1 Exhibit 2
Carpet banning/deleting all fan art is not the answer. If you think something is too mature or pornographic and is not official art, PM the mods. Otherwise, there are gallery filters for a reason. If you want to avoid fan art that badly, use them.
" @LordAndrew said:True, but it still states that such fan art is allowed in the personal galleries of users and for use on profile pages. This does not excuse their inclusion in the wiki galleries, but that's the rule (which an incredible number of people have flaunted)." From the site FAQ:Yes, but in that same rule set it says that pornographic images that are NOT official game art are prohibited, therefore, pornographic fan art should be disallowed. I think fan art could have it's place, but the staff or mods or whoever needs to decide the direction of the wiki. Is it going to be a more structured "Xbox Live" style database with official clean content, or is it going to be a wild west "anything goes 'cept for nipples" database? Dealing in shades of gray is not going to go anywhere, and expecting the majority to take care of the problem by itself via digital housecleaning isn't going to be effective either.
I personally believe fan art shold be automatically seperate from the main image gallery, and that both (a small subsection) of anime fans should keep their hentai bullshit off the site and the porn addicts should get their fix elsewhere too. We don't have to keep our ties on here, but lets keep it classy.

This site is fucking rife with naked cartoon pussy. I'm not complaining but on my way to an innocent thread I sometimes find myself with a faceful of hot cartoon snatch.
I also think the lady in the above picture is taking a nap and her hand just happened to land in a suggestive position. Shit is tamecore when it comes to naked cartoon pussy on this site, and I invented that word as I was typing this.
"or is it going to be a wild west style "anything goes 'cept for nipples" database? "
Agreed. Not with anything that you're saying specifically, just with the fact that the Wild West is completely best characterized by its "anything goes 'cept for nipples" policy.
" @LordAndrew said:And I never disagreed with that. I'm addressing the people who have a problem with all fan art." From the site FAQ:Yes, but in that same rule set it says that pornographic images that are NOT official game art are prohibited, therefore, pornographic fan art should be disallowed. Just to expand on what mracoon said earlier in this topic....
- If unofficial/fan-art features nude/naked tits/fanny/cock/balls then it's not allowed to be uploaded to a wiki page's gallery.
Arguably anything that doesn't fit the above criteria gets a pass. Although if people feel extremely strongly about certain galleries they're always welcome to contact the mod team directly and plead a case for us to investigate.
This site needs an 18+ warning and a content filter so that soccer moms won't band together and shut Giant Bomb down.
Check out Lara Croft's " fan art" section for instance.
This is *after* I had decided to remove most of the duplicates, fetish art, trace art, weird anatomy art and bad printer/ kindergarten quality images.
" Check out Lara Croft's " fan art" section for instance. This is *after* I had decided to remove most of the duplicates, fetish art, trace art, weird anatomy art and bad printer/ kindergarten quality images. "Oddly enough 306 of those 307 images are from the same person...
I don't know... what I value about the GB image galleries is the high res official art. I have found things here that Google could barely scrounge up. There is some argument to be made that titillation will bring an audience, and for a growing site that has value. Without checking my upload gallery, I have likely posted fan art on a few occasions when I found something remarkable, but it is certainly not something I seek out. There are so many other sites for that. Image galleries were worth mega points at launch, and more people can click Upload than type something original. That won't change.
The current rules are clear about hentai, and (deliberately?) vague about fan-art. Part of being an open and rep-based wiki, is people get to shape their little pocket of the site how they want to. And if someone else can build on that through better writing and better images, the whole site improves. But there is very good fan art, and very bad fan art. Is it All, Nothing, or thirty different judgement calls from thirty different backgrounds? I thought the Crowd Moderation of images feature was the single most democratic thing I've seen a video game site do. Brilliant stuff. I don't need those Chris Crawford pics to go up right away. If they get voted down 7-3 I can accept that. They're not my pics to begin with.
I greatly respect the work and time that Ignor and the other mega-editors put into everything on the site; but if me @ >10,000 points is going to get overruled by those @ >100,000 points who do not even answer to the Whiskey Media staff, then GB turns into Wikipedia with 1% of uber-editors controlling what content lives and dies.
I try to play by Whiskey rules. Site FAQ or bust. And it's all for fun, right? Right?
Whoa, man. Not Safe For Work. Label stuff like this next time. I wasn't expecting a screen-filling picture like that.
And yeah, people need to stop putting shit like this into random game galleries. You'll be flipping through Mass Effect images and come across some horribly-drawn pseudo-nude Tali.
Yet another reason why the wiki pages need a history viewer.
" We're no Anime Vice, but I agree that all fan art should be abolished from our wiki pages. Really, they serve no purpose. "We're no DeviantArt either. Images on giantbomb should definitely stick to game-related, box-art, screenshots, press-release images etc.
" Image galleries were worth mega points at launch, and more people can click Upload than type something original. That won't change. "Images still award the same amount of points as at launch, but the difference now is that adding text to articles gives a lot more points now. And the Top Men "improved" the uploading and organizing tools by making it harder to use, causing fan art uploads to decrease in frequency. So there has been change, but not the sort of change that will cause all the existing fan art to disappear from Giant Bomb. The majority of it is stuff that's been there for a long time now.
In my mind, those pictures exist here because people want them some wiki points, so ANYTHING related to the game in any way whatsoever gets added.
" Yet another reason why the wiki pages need a history viewer. "Doesn't cover image changes. I don't think that stuff is tracked at all, aside from the now-defunct "Image Submissions" page on user profiles that stopped updating after passing the 1000-point barrier.
@Ignor: Certainly, I'm sure I would agree with any example you gave me. Examples and Principles are very different things however, and we are essentially talking about censorship in a medium that is already violent. Basically, I'll support a specific site policy over and above any one user's opinion or sensibilities. If it's the majority of user and staff opinions, that makes for a valid policy, and those who disagree can look elsewhere. I'd be fine with getting rid of all fan art galleries; but not as fine with being picky about what stays and what goes. Undoubtedly there will be official art that crosses any boundary we set.
