PC Games in 2010
Well as a proud PC gamer, sometimes it's hard even for me to remember which games actually are coming out for the platform. Worry no more! (or not) and behold an ever growing list of high-profile, significant (some might say awesome) releases for the PC in 2010. This does not include 2009 games released for the PC this year. Also does not include every game to be released for the platform in 2010.
---Now in spiffy chronological order with release dates---
1. VVVVVV The little indie game that could, VVVVVV decided to scratch a nostalgic itch a lot of people forgot they had. The price is possibly the largest point of controversy given the difficulty and content but important to play for what it accomplished in terms of style and calling back to older games. (Sorry for forgetting about this one). ---January 10--- | |
2. Mass Effect 2 Do I really need to say anything? ---January 26th--- | |
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat I have dumped more than 50 hours into this game across three playthroughs. Now granted I'm a nut for STALKER but for anyone who remotely enjoyed the original or is curious about the series, this is the one to get. ---February 2nd--- | |
4. BioShock 2 A very interesting PC pedigree given the original System Shock developers making the first one and now Digital Extreme and the makers of Arx Fatalis being involved in the sequel. I also hear 2k Marin and the other 500 developers did a pretty good job with this one. PC approved! ---February 9th--- | |
5. Napoleon: Total War Empire: Total War part II in a way. Complicated out the ass and why people love it. I hear it may or may not still have Empire's issues. ---February 23rd--- | |
6. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Curious how this franchise began on the PC, made a giant circle, and is now back on the PC with the sequel to Bad Company. It's Battlefield y'all so...yeah it's going to be on this list. ---March 2nd--- | |
7. Supreme Commander 2 Supreme Commander made an impact with it's technical feats and detail. Can it provide a unique or substantial RTS experience against Dawn of War II and Starcraft 2? Time mofos...time. ---March 2nd--- | |
8. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising Relic following through in their expanding the Dawn of War series, the first major expansion to Dawn of War II. I hear the Chaos faction is involved. ---March 11th--- | |
9. Metro 2033 What happens if you take an Eastern Bloc game and give it a western publiher's budget? Metro 2033 apparently. Hopefully the X-Ray derived engine (used by STALKER) won't cause too much similarity between the two post-apocalyptic Ukraine/Russian themed first-person shooters. Hmm... ---March 16th--- | |
10. Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening Definitely going on this list for being the big exception to the DLC standard: an old-school expansion pack. I still have to get this game and Awakening's length is still up in the air but still one to look for. ---March 16th--- | |
11. Just Cause 2 Stunt position! On the PC! ---March 23rd--- | |
12. Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West The combination cheaper price and drawn back class-based experience coupled with the Wild West setting makes this an awfully unique game. I like it! Makes for some good times I think. ---April 8th--- | |
13. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction Splinter Cell! On the PC! Well that's not exciting news but it's still one of the biggest games of the year and you can play it on your computing machinery. What more do you want? Free porn? Wait... ---April 13th--- | |
14. Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter An HD remake of my favorite game of all time?! Of course it's going on this list. Here's hoping the launch goes smoother than for the First Encounter because the game is timeless in my opinion. ---April 28th--- | |
15. Heroes of Newerth Ah yes another PC gaming callback. Remember how DOTA was crazy popular and still is? Well the original DOTA guy (or one of them, still hazy about the pedigree) is involved and Valve is throwing money at it. The Torchlight of the DOTA genre to me. ---April--- | |
16. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse I loved Season 1 and have yet to find a good deal on Season 2 but it should make everyone grateful that Telltale is STILL making the game that really put them on the map. Turns out they are taking their lessons from Tales of Monkey Island and improving (at the very least changing) the series. Graphics improved, weird crazy psychic powers and awesome Sam & Max-ness! So hell yeah adventure games! ---April--- | |
17. Mafia II The long awaited sequel to a game many passed by and some consider did the Godfather-esque crime game best on any platform. (Certainly way better than the actual Godfather games). Maybe a modern polish will be enough to make this a modern crime classic, maybe not. We'll have to wait and see. ---May 3rd--- | |
18. Lost Planet 2 If it's a good game, then maybe you want to play it on the PC. All I got for this one. ---May 18th--- | |
19. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands Many are hoping this is the Prince of Persia game people actually want to play after Sands of Time. Not that the other games in the franchise are bad but man did they drop that aesthetic quick. Luckily PC fans will be able to find out for themselves. ---May 18th--- | |
20. Split/Second FINALLY someone does something interesting with the race genre that isn't sim, arcade/"kart", or combat. They all have their place but Split/Second has justifiably garnered a lot of positive hype about its premise. Which is totally about blowing the track UP. Hopefully the execution can match it. ---May 18--- | |
21. Blur An interesting mash-up that I'm surprised no one has really done yet. What happens if you took the classic Mario Kart style and put it in a realistic real-world car environment? A bunch of powers and real car damage models. And Blur of course. Play it just fine on your mouse and keyboard (or controller)! ---May 25--- | |
22. Alpha Protocol Can Obsidian make a genre melting action game (ala Mass Effect) work in the more plausible espionage setting? Sega's marketing sure isn't helping anyone answer this question. ---June 1st--- | |
23. Singularity This is only getting mentioned because it might be the first game to actually do the whole time manipulation thing right, especially on the PC. Singularity has also been delayed and floating around the development netherspace for a few years now and will finally hit PC's this year. ---June 1st--- | |
24. R.U.S.E. Table-top touchscreen madness. We'll see. ---June 8th--- | |
25. Darksiders Goes on the list because the original release is still in 2010. That can only mean Darksiders is coming to the PC! I hear this game is pretty good and I'm always happy to have a previously console exclusive jump the fence. Hope the port is as good as the PS3 version. ---June--- | |
26. Sid Meier's Civilization V Again another PC staple that I missed when it was big. Not a big fan of it's complexity but that's what makes it a PC exclusive. Only the 3rd on this list (behind STALKER and Starcraft). ---September 1st--- | |
27. Brink Lotta hype and hopefully the delivery to follow through. ---September 10th--- | |
28. APB Crazy persistent open-world crime action MMORPG. Man this list is getting long in ways I'm liking a lot. ---Q3--- | |
29. Fallout: New Vegas More Fallout! I and a very large group of people want an excuse to go back to this great franchise and it's coming this year. Vegas baby! ---October 1st--- | |
30. Crysis 2 It's the second Crysis. So hi-tech suits and shooting Koreans in the face[citation needed]. Hi-tech suits and guns confirmed though. That and the last great proponent of PC gaming graphics. ---Q4--- | |
31. Portal 2 After all this game update ARG craziness (which I followed all of) Valve finally brings the sequel to this amazing game. Given the multitude of stories and mysteries the game is capable of telling and revealing, I'm so excited to see what they cook up. Do I hear co-op? ---Q4--- | |
32. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Again this one doesn't need any sort of description. Although I have never gotten into the genre when Starcraft was king and have since preferred less traditional RTS games, this one is big regardless of my tastes. ---2010--- | |
33. Medal of Honor This is a wildcard situation. One on hand Medal of Honor is a big name that has been very successful on the PC in the past. MW2 is not that hard to compete with (couldn't replace COD4's magic despite selling big). That and taking the Afghanistan setting seriously could move war games forward in an important way. But they have to make a good game first... ---2010--- | |
34. TrackMania 2 The sequel to a game that I would never play even if you payed me (I got so frustrated I couldn't bring myself to play the free version again). However maybe they can make changes to make it so you don't lose the challenge the moment you touch the sides. Also Jeff goes nuts over it and so do a LOT of, mostly international, fans. ---2010--- | |
35. Metal Gear Solid: Rising Huh!? Metal Gear? On the PC? Yes that's right and I have no idea how it will turn out. Especially when the important story bits from the previous game are console exclusive. ---2010--- | |
36. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm The final expansion and really reason to play WoW ever again. DEFINITELY not a fan of WoW and MMO's in general but it's important to PC gaming that it's largest game is coming to a close in a way. ---2010--- |
