@Antikythera:

But let me ask you this: would you really be willing to pay $60 for a game that you know is mediocre?

"Saying this game isn't enjoyable is a crock of shit. This game is mildly enjoyable."

Mmmm. Love that backhanded compliment.

I think there's certainly some merit to be found in OP's post, and I think my problem with gaming as a whole--particularly with console gaming--is that it seems like games nowadays are just the same two military shooters or third person action game. So really, I respect your decision to not play Hotline Miami. However, I'm willing to defend the game on the basis that I find it particularly unique. There's not a game on the market that looks quite like it, and it's trippy, demented 80s aesthetic is something I'm drawn to (helps that it reminds me of the film "Drive)

I'm not going to waste my time and try to justify the game's violent nature; you have every right to be disgusted by it. I just don't think the main reason people are digging this game because you could totally smash people's heads in a gory fashion. Sure, there's a place for shock (something early Rockstar is certain guilty of) but there's more to this game's critical success than just a bunch of people getting off on gore.

Should we expect more from our games? Absolutely. Film and literature both have the potential to be something more than timewasters, and I think gaming should definitely come into its own in that aspect. However, I just don't think there's anything particularly wrong with a game like Hotline Miami.

I think the other half is that there is the crowd that has its expectations of what Resident Evil SHOULD be and can't just accept it for what it is. I've long since just accepted that Resident Evil isn't a horror game anymore its an action franchise and its slowly evolved into that ever since RE4.

I went in expecting nothing less than gunning down lots of nasty creatures and being a ton of wacky new virus strains and several main characters transforming into hideous monstrosities. Its all par for the course now days for Resident Evil. I guess if that isn't what you want from Resident Evil then you could be disappointing but I for one am really liking it.

Well said, man, totally agree. I, for one, am entertained when playing RE6 and am enjoying the experience. I have been gaming for 26 years and throughout that time there have always been games that generate love/hate criticisms. I am having fun playing RE6 and will continue to enjoy it even while others hate and smash on it. It's just the way it always will be.

You know, I've been noticing this attitude quite a bit in regards to this game--and it's quite distressing. Basically, it sounds like people are just giving up on this franchise and making due with what it's become, which is just depressing. I just have an image in my head of a line of gamers hanging their heads, shuffling in mark time, handing in their money while the "Lords of Capcom" cackle in the background.

For a franchise that was once the epitome of horror gaming, it's sad that it's basically become a hodgepodge of half-baked ideas stolen from other games--and that people are fine with it because it's competently made and it looks pretty.

But it wasn't....at all. Maybe you couldn't blow shit up with a tank or engage in some of the craziness found in other open world games, but that game stuck with me where I mostly just discard others as frivolous entertainment. And man, that ending was fucking great.

Errr what? Torchlight II might not be as technically demanding as other games, but ugly it is not.

@DoctorDanger99: "is ignorance bliss"

Not really. I can understand the appeal of keeping your head to the ground and ignoring all of the awful crap that's going on in the world. Life is short, why shouldn't we choose to live in pleasure as long as we can? Problem is it creates this rather childish, limited worldview that breeds complacency. To be a healthy adult, one must maintain a balance of knowledge--and that means taking all of that bad shit in stride. I know people my age (I'm 23) that have that mindset and it's kind of sad to see grown adults have such a childish mentality; to see people my age who can't even read beyond a middle school reading level; to see people not even the tiniest bit aware of what's going on around them, and thinking it's a good thing. It's pathetic, and it's mainly the reason why we're looked down upon by others in the rest of the world.

Admittedly, I find myself caught up in my own nostalgia, pining for simpler days of watching tv and playing video games; but that's what nostalgia is--sentimental bullshit. The best days of your life are ahead of you; just live your life, bro.

" honestly think i know too much. about everything."

No. No, you don't. This is what shitty teenagers believe. Don't be that guy.

@Klei:

Wait what? So then what's the difference between a shitty game and a fun game? So should we just disregard every bad review because "every game has issues?"
