Often in my group of friends, it is said that 1994(3) was really good for music as well, a breakout year as it were.

Was there something in the water (Hubble? Berlin Wall/Collapse of USSR?, something else?) that made this happen? Perhaps it is more to do with our relative ages (I'm 34) that make it so things at ~ X time were to be remembered as super novel? Or maybe, it was indeed just random chance that made these years really special for multiple forms of media?

@jinxplayer: In 1994 Nintendo proclaimed "The Year of the Cartridge". It was when devs started putting powerful chips inside the cartridge to increase it's memory limitations helping the console run better graphics and more variety of music, and they announced the N64. It wasn't random.
