Yeah, this kinda bugs me too. In fact I prefer games have a consistent art style throughout. Like if it has super stylised cut scenes, then switches to realistic in game graphics, that's disappointing. My preference is for a game to have a unique art direction, and in engine cut scenes.

@cikame: DMC 4 had some stunning architecture and just fantastic art direction all around. Looks nicer than 5 to me. 5 is more realistic, but I think 4 just looks better.

I think there might be a new GRID this year. Last one came out 2019, and Dirt Rally and 4 both got sequels after two years.

@undeadpool: I think Sacrifice is the reason I liked the RTS part of Brutal Legend more than most people. Had some experience managing an army while simultaneously controlling a character. Both great and tragically overlooked games with excellent voice casts.

I think they need to do another "back to basics" type of game. Take a break from open world, just make some stand alone tracks with very deliberate layouts designed for fun racing. Don't put too much resources into an elaborate story. Just, you're new in town and want to race the best. Maybe a new Hot Pursuit or Underground.

Once they have mechanics refined and a game that is well received, then use that foundation to build a big open world with all that Fast and Furious attitude crap.

@bigsocrates: Everything you said about Xenoblade is true, but in it's defense, the world is impressively huge. Amazed they managed to get locations that big working on Wii.

I'd say God of War Ascension is the best looking game on PS3. Gets overlooked because it wasn't as good as 3. Same Could be said about DMC.

Split/Second

Halo 4

Tomb Raider Reboot

Forza Motorsport 4

Killzone 3

Journey

Need for Speed: The Run

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time

I'd like to see a new 1080, Excite Truck, Geist, ARMS, or Mach Rider.

But really the answer is F-Zero.

There really isn't anything quite like Planescape. The closest games ahve already been suggested.

Not a game, but I do think you might want to check out the Sandman series by Neal Gaiman. Graphic novels in a unique fantasy setting that explores interesting philisophical themes and has a dark sense of humor. I consider Planescape to be the Sandman of video games.

Mach Rider. I have a dream that Nintendo would hire Platinum to bring this series back. It would basically be Vanquish on a motor cycle.

Heavy Metal: Geomatrix. A sort of followup to the Capcom Spawn game, this game was less ambitious but in a way that made it better. Kind of an arena brawler/shooter with over-the-top weapons and characters. Sits right next to Power Stone as one of my favorite Dreamcast games.

Wet. The love child of Max Payne, Prince of Persia, and Kill Bill in the middle of it's rebellious, teenage punk phase. A bit more janky than the games it draws influence from, but still a lot of fun. Would love a sequel that polished things up and ditched the QTE boss battles.

Jambo Safari. Basically Crazy Taxi, but you chase down African wildlife in your jeep and hog tie them.

Brutal Legend. I actually enjoyed the RTS parts of this game, but it seems no one else did.

F-Zero. I must be the only person who wants to see a new entry. It's the only logical explanation why Nintendo has gone so long without making a new one. Yep, that must be it.

I'll keep an eye on this since Milestone makes fairly solid racing games, but licensed stuff for kids rarely gets a decent production budget. It's unfortunate because Forza Horizon 3 showed us how awesome a Hot Wheels game could be with enough effort put into it.
